So I've been thinking a lot about the great promos of wrestling and how most of the first that come to mind are from before the beginning of the 21st Century. Now that we're 20 years in, (the 21st Century officially began Jan. 1st, 2001) I thought it might be cool to look back and share our favorites from this century and maybe we can discover some underrated, or forgotten promos from all over the world. To start us off I'll share a few of my favorites. "You are a parody of wrestling" John Cena and Daniel Bryan 2013 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FJgfxsYaQzA It was pretty common by 2013 for Cena's opponents to ridicule him for not being a "real" wrestler, even HHH used it against him in the build to their Wrestlemania match, but Daniel's arguments just worked better knowing how hard he had worked all over the world with some of the hardest hitting wrestlers of all time, Cena sold Daniel's insults to perfection, by the end of the promo he's begging Daniel to slap him across the face, because deep down he wants Daniel's respect, the match was phenomenal and my personal favorite WWE match ever. "I need my older brother Cody and Dustin Rhodes 2019 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qTlF7QLhk34 Usually a great promo occurs before the actual match, and it's an integral part of the build to take a regular contest between to guys to something more emotional you can really be invested in. Cody's tearful reunion with his older brother after one of the best, and bloodiest matches in AEW's young history was the exact catharsis their story needed, and the tears, the blood, and the bond is just very real and beautiful. "While Doink the Clown had green hair and a rubber nose, Stone Cold Steve Austin was drinking his first beer in ECW drat you!" Paul Heyman and Vince McMahon 2001 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=55a-XAGvHF4 To most people, the WCW/ECW Invasion angle was a flop, but it had some incredible moments either way, my favorite being this "shoot" style promo from Paul to Vince in the lead up to the Survivor Series that would end the Invasion once and for all. Paul sells desperation, anger, and futility and Vince McMahon is uncharacteristically subdued in this moment, his eyes tell a pretty good story of knowing what Paul is saying is true, but not being willing to admit it. Vince McMahon had a monopoly on the industry now, and this scathing promo from Paul now, looking back, feels like the true end of an era that ended with the villain on top.

I put this in the RIP New Jack thread, but I'll put it here too. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a8egRoeZpms New Jack being quiet, calm, and motherfucking terrifying. The famous Miz walks to the ring promo. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fKU_k9mcZsc I like the Miz more than most people. But this is one of his finest works. Telling his story from reality-TV goof to Champion. It has a couple of good lines in it too, "I'd rather you hate me for everything I am than cheer me for something I'm not." It is part of the long line of "heels with legitimate grievances' promos in wrestling, with Miz's grievance being that he has been shat on for ages and has worked his way to a championship but still gets shat on and disrespected. It's also got the hook of him walking to the ring. To it's detriment, sure Miz has cut 17 other promos like this since, with similar themes and inflections. But this one is good. And gently caress all y'all, I still like Mike Mizanin and his punchable face.

I know people like to dunk on him, and some aspects of it haven't aged particularly well (like the WWE running the term "pipebomb" into the ground), but the promo itself absolutely holds the gently caress up. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ijBx8dJORNo

We can dunk on him for being an rear end in a top hat while still recognising that he's one of the best talkers of the 21st century: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2DOw6DnFD10 This is the one that really got people paying attention to him. His feud with Raven was proof that ROH could do story as well as workrate. And this is the promo that solidified Punk as one to really watch https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lwAslWen79Q https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KnnOBAh8xVI CM Punk was on his way to WWE. Everyone knew that he had signed and he was leaving after the show. CM Punk wins the ROH title and is going to vacate it straight after. Only that wasn't the case. Punk had agreed a later starting date with WWE so he could do one last angle with ROH. The original Summer of Punk where he was going to take the title to WWE with him. Even going as far as to sign his WWE contract on the ROH title

It's weird to remember that once upon a time, big-name indie guys signing with WWE was a rare occurrence and not something that just automatically happened once you hit a certain level of buzz.

I have sat here for an hour trying to explain why I like William Regal's Late Autumn of My Career promo so much, but it's hard to find the right words for it. It's just...a drat good promo. A deeply personal promo. One that hits all the right buttons for me. Just a tired old villain looking back at his career and the mistakes he's made and realizing that this is it, this is the end for him. He's not winning this match, there's no chance in hell of that happening, but he's going into it with every bit of fight he's got left in him. He's not coming out on top, but he's giving his opponent hell and he's going to make him fight tooth and nail for the win. It's just...everything a promo should be for a fight like this. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T4zmenHmjxk

Oh wait he said Cesaro in the back half of it. That's his final match I think, it's a good one too.

I never watched NJPW and so never really was exposed to Kenny Omega, but this thing while he was still a good guy and Mox pulled out of All Out due to injury really fascinated me and kind of hooked me on him. https://youtu.be/t1_5qWeSgcg Edit: that Miz promo above was simultaneously so out of nowhere but also completely inevitable and was such a ball tearer.
