I really do feel sorry for the new generation of gamers who have all this free to play bullshit thrust upon them. It's actually one of the main reasons I never upgraded to a smart phone.

Smart phones are cool for checking the news, email, forums and playing solitaire while listening to podcast. Also I couldn't navigate to save my life so I was pretty happy when they became a thing. Gaming on phones is only worth it if you get some emulators and buy a good gamepad.

Oh, dear. I did love the indie game references, though.

This and the prior (non-free2play RPG) section are the roughest for gameplay, the rest is still obtuse at points but a lot more fun.

Have to agree with this, this last section really overstayed its welcome IMO. The joke/commentary is solid, but the amount of tedium they put you through for the sake of it just seemed unpleasant.

There absolutely is some degree of overdoing the bit here, but, like, i can't stay mad at it. This whole thing is just too good for some tedium to drag it down.

But I do love the first two sections and next bits more (if it's what I think it is, the very next bit is the most creative of the bunch too IMO).

Mobile Games used to have some cool ideas but it's an absolute shitpit nowadays. Surprised the game didn't make a RAID SHADOW LEGENDS reference.

New video! Time for another new dimension! Will this one finally be the one we've been looking for? By the way - you're not ready for this chapter. I promise.

I'm just glad the Tchaikovsky stopped. That sounded good for the first two minutes and then my brain started twitching. More power ballads should involve computer code.

Messing with the credits to solve puzzles already more than makes up for the last section, and then yes... singing Game, and singing GG right after. It's both completely unexpected while it's happening and in hindsight a perfectly reasonable development of the plot. GG's song takes this for a ride because up to this point the lost love angle's been a bit thin and suddenly we get the other side of the coin on that front in a really abrupt yet still well done way.

I don't know enough Russian names to distinguish more than Tchaikovsky, but I can recognize the English names. "Buster Chaplin" refers to Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin, both comic actors who got their starts in the silent film era. "Tim Elfman" is Tim Burton and Danny Elfman who collaborated respectively as director and composer on a number of films. (And if you've seen one Tim Burton movie you know his aesthetic.)

Alright, like I said, here's an edited together version of Game's song that flows a lot better than with me sitting on my rear end waiting for a line to trigger.

I think this is the Chaplin film in the game but I know this is the Keaton film because I've seen it. That whole sequence was hilarious. Except for the power ballad, that was heartbreaking. Curse you, lighthearted metagame, for making me feel things.

That was completely unexpected, and amazing. And while we're throwing out the references, Gigi's song is of course in the style of a James Bond opening, in particular Casino Royale (2006, the first with Daniel Craig as Bond). To quote Chris Cornell: When you return to the night If you think you've won You never saw me change The game that we have been playing

You got the Casino Royale vibes too, huh? To completely digress, I honestly think Casino Royale was something of a high water mark for the bond franchise. They even redid the gun barrel sequence.

Oof, I've been watching through this and as much as I really love the idea and the inventiveness of the puzzles, the not-game really does not have any faith at all in the player's ability to notice things for themselves, does it? It feels like you can't go five minutes without Game butting in to point out the thing that just happened. I really want to enjoy it, and I'm definitely interested to see where it goes, but having every joke explained twice to me really takes me out of the game.

New video! Things are really looking up! Game's been reunited with GiGi! Surely, things will continue to go well. The thing is... even with the hint system, and even with Game specifically pointing out the things you should be noticing... people still don't notice things. Both Pikamee's stream and Amelia's stream of There Is No Game have multiple moments where they really should not have gotten stuck, given the help the game provides, but they still got stuck in a way that's quite frustrating to watch. I think this non-game really just wanted to make sure everybody can get through it. To try and be as non-obtuse as possible. They didn't succeed in all facets, but they tried.

There does seem to be a pretty depressing mechanism at play where if you want to have a hope of selling a game, you have to make everything obvious enough that the stupidest streamer out of all the ones who might be showing your game off won't miss it even while they're distracted by the need to engage with their audience.

The game can still be pretty obtuse in a few places. Several puzzles in the Sherlock Holmes section have some real adventure game logic going on that can be hard to figure out, I was stuck on the puzzle in the Zelda section about freezing the lake because it never crossed my mind to commit murder with the pick axe. Now that it is over, my only real complaint with there is no game is the length. It feels very short, and I just wanted more once I finished. Still a fantastic experience, I found it a lot more enjoyable than a lot of AAA titles or other Indies.

Well that is certainly a way to end things, I guess? This whole non-game is just an extended piss-take at the audience for not successfully crowdfunding the game, isn't it. There were a lot of excellent moments in this, but I have to say I think episode one (with all the messing with things out of spite) was my favourite and nothing else quite lived up to it. The attempts to give this thing a serious (well, for certain definitions anyway) plot didn't quite land for me.

Well, this was fun, though in retrospect it seems somewhat short. And I guess we'll never actually know what Mister Glitch's evil plan was.
|
# ? May 27, 2021 20:09 |
The plan was probably just "take control of all electronic devices everywhere" which, well, isn't really the worst plan to take over the world given how many stupidly important things people will hook up with Internet access without thinking twice. I really hope this gets a sequel somewhere down the line.

New video! We've finished the main non-game, but there is still something to be seen - where it all began. The original game jam version of There Is No Game. You might be surprised to see just how much made it into the final non-game. And with that, we've arrived at the end of this LP. Short one this time, but hey, that's OK sometimes. LET'S PLAY THERE IS NO GAME: WRONG DIMENSION - THE END
