Thanks for the history lesson, EasyEW - this poo poo is really cool to have in context.

anyway, onto today's Blueberry: McClure is a believer in the camouflage of audacity, or McClure puts Blueberry on the spot, or I am glad that the original story didn't simply have McClure give the Apaches whiskey under the idea that it would knock them out - alcohol addiction in native populations throughout the Americas is an unfortunate stereotype brought about from actual malicious trading from white colonial powers - much like the tea-for-opium trade in China. Deaths from alcohol and alcohol-related injuries in some native populations is four times as common in the general U.S. population - the idea that there is a genetic predisposition to alcoholism in native populations is NOT guaranteed - it is far more likely due to the poverty and discrimination these peoples suffer from. It's an extremely grim situation, one that I am not remotely qualified to talk on, and would applaud if someone more qualified would.

Similarly, I always feel bad when I see pugs and other terribly inbred types of dog. The poor things look like the Hapsburgs of the canine family, and they just scream "I'm going to live three and a half years during which I will spend my waking hours bashing into everything because sight has been bred out of my malformed species and then I will die of spontaneous universal organ failure".

Why you would intentionally turn a fierce species of domesticatable hunting animal into a pocket animal that can barely survive under the constant care and supervision of multiple 21st century middle class humans is beyond me.

I really like vintage Val, but man, Hal's been banging this same drum for quite some time now. We get it, Val's in love and doesn't know it, Aleta's in charge but Val doesn't know it. It's been five months (publication dates, anyway) since he snatched Aleta. A strip that's usually fast-paced and full of variety has become more of a romantic comedy with occasional disemboweling.

I'm enjoying Val getting owned over and over and not yet realizing it

The art certainly goes a long way compared to certain other strips dragging things out

This part of the story will be over soon, for those who are getting bored with it. Val figures out how he really feels by Wednesday or so, and then Aleta gets kidnapped by someone else.
