Are drag strips just banning these cars? It's insane to me that Tesla seems to be planning to sell cars that run in the 8s bone stock.

Street cars newer than 2008 slower than 9.99 with factory safety gear in place don’t need anything except a roll bar in convertibles or t-tops, but any faster and yes, they should (and do) get kicked if they break out. Looks like 8.50 or faster you need a funny car style cage - one with all the extra structure around the driver.

Course this is for sanctioned events, I guess there’s nothing stopping you doing what you like with a private track rental, except maybe track insurance?

Whatever transpires, the Tesla Plaid and Plaid+ platforms are almost certainly going to be too fast for drag strips without further safety equipment

To be fair that was first cab off the rank from google images and turns out is illustrating a kit to add in the driver bars in red, rather than a full cage design. You’re right, but also we’re talking about street car class specifically here too. Other classes and faster classes have better requirements, I think dash bar is the next notable step, and I didn’t go into gusseting etc either.

Wicked. Tricksy. False.

Also those magical Tesla times now have an * next to them because to achieve that, they don't count the rollout, and that's where the 1.99 second times come from.
I cant wait for other manufactures to get creative with this and start issuing * next to times with little small text at the bottom that says 'excludes first 3 tire rotations at launch'
Or ' when dropped out the back of a cargo plane'

As far as I know yes. Someone else can do the math to work out the size of a tank and the thruster size to increase a 1800kg car's accleration fro 2 sec to 1.1 sec to 100kph.

Obviously compressed air has the potential but I still dont think a tank that would fit in a Tesla would have the potential to do that.

Edit : Vanishing point wasnt fuelled the way I thought it was so snipped

There’s an engineering explained video on it that speculates that it’s probably theoretically possible if you filled the entire “back seat” with a compressed air chamber.

The issue is that a) when it was full you’d be driving around in what is basically a car sized pressure bomb where any puncture to the chamber would be EXTREMELY BAD and b) the amount of force required to significantly affect the acceleration of a 4000lb object would also turn any road debris in the jet steam into missiles.

Here's that video. It would need just about 30kg of air, not too crazy.

Another possibility that I think he didn't mention would be to use it to create downforce, since the acceleration will be otherwise limited by the available traction.

E: now that I think about, a scuba tank has just 3kg of air in it, so you'd need like 10 of them

My main problem with Teslas is the lack of a grille. I know it doesn't need one, and putting a fake one there bust because we're used to it would feel as dumb as the fake hood air vents on my Stinger, but it just needs... something. Some aero lines or anything, I don't know. Of course we're now just waiting for pricing on the Kia EV6 for my wife's next car and that has the double grille thing, and I don't know why. It certainly helps it look more like a normal car but is that the only reason it's there?

Edit: also I never saw C8 Corvettes until a couple week ago and now I'm seeing them every time I go out and I love it. I had my fun bucking the trend having a Corvette when I was 25, but now I am fully looking forward to my toddler growing up, moving out, and me being the same 60 year old greyhair driving a Corvette with the targa top off right around the speed limit.

I wish tesla would do something more aggressive and interesting stylistically since they don't have to have the car breathing air at the front, but I supposed there's pedestrian and aerodynamics reasons to not get too weird.

It seems to me like their focus on drag coefficient is what results in their "unlicensed video game car" kind of style.

Personally I think the new Roadster looks fuckin' sweet. I'm interested to see how different the actual product will be though, both in terms of design and performance.

I think the issue might not be the lack of a grille, but how poorly they design around it. It's particularly bad on the M3 imo:

This flat part on the front just looks really weird, like it's supposed to have an Aston-like opening there but then they just closed it offso it looks like Keanu in the Matrix

I never liked that design because the crease looks like they're trying to draw attention to the lack of grille. Like they started with a grille, then erased it but left the eraser smudge marks on purpose to make you notice it isn't there anymore. It doesn't even look like a photoshop, it looks like an MSpaint edit in real life.

Sadly Tesla's designers are the double-down kind, if someone tells them their design looks like crap they'll dig in deeper.

I'm not a fan of it either. There's aftermarket bumpers for the car that make it look less like a half finished industrial design student's class project.

Seems solid enough if your local Genesis dealer is unpleasant enough to stop you from buying a V6 G70. Though how did Acura make a FWD-based car that's the same size as an E-Class with the same rear legroom and headroom as the RWD-based G70?
