CRUSTY MINGE posted:E: there's a lot of problems with their system, but honestly, the walking isn't it. The amount, sure, but not everyone is capable of picking rate because the computer wants them to change floors and walk an eighth of a mile between picks. You can't maintain rate when the algorithms telling you where to pick is sending you from the third floor on one side of the warehouse to the far end of the second floor beyond the chasm of concrete in between. This is a solved problem, Amazon's algorithm shouldn't have this issue. Either they're leaving millions of dollars in profit lying on the table, or they have a way of telling the algorithm "We want to fire this employee, sabotage their performance metrics." I know which one is actually happening.

Either they're leaving millions of dollars in profit lying on the table, or they have a way of telling the algorithm "We want to fire this employee, sabotage their performance metrics." I know which one is actually happening. Oh, yeah, totally. I was kind of a thorn in my floor leads' rear end, and I would've definitely been canned if I fell below pick rate for a variety of reasons. There are definitely people who just can't hack pick rate and don't belong on the floor, though. They would apply to work at amazon and struggle to make it a week because the pay was $2-4/hr better than anywhere else hiring. Those that made it a week, tended to stay on, lose weight gradually, but the constant stresses of pick just destroys your body for every pound you carry. I emphasize this because the warehouse I worked in was in Tennessee, home of the Moon Pie. In those cases, there was always the option of getting put on a waitlist for a pack out or ship packaging, but often people can't wait the 1-4 months it would take to get called, so they'd try to start on pick. People who've never walked more than a handful of miles a day are suddenly trying to keep pace with people who do double digits. Other positions would still have them doing 2 miles a day, still on concrete or steel, but much more tolerable for the heavier set. All positions paying the same meant it didn't matter where they put you, as long as you can make rate and not piss off your lead. When your option is Amazon for $12/hr (at the time) or a gas station for $9/hr, would you rather try to walk all night or just sit behind a register? I did register jockey poo poo for just shy of a year in an "adult" store (no arcades/jackshacks), I'd rather make more money walking around a warehouse all night. Amazon is trash, I'm not arguing that. Unfortunately, local employers are even worse in terms of compensation and benefits. The whole system is garbage and I'd love to watch it burn before dying. Nah, stocking was dayshift. I worked evenings and nights, which meant more staring at the security cameras and watching out for teenagers trying to sneak in than gazing at the field of silicone dicks on the walls. I mean, you can stare at dicks or watch the outside cameras for people that might try to rob you. That and if anything weird happened, I'd write down the time it happened so the manager could have a good laugh, too. Employees got free "rentals" for dvds though. Definite perk in the time of dvd burners.

I gotta admit I initially interpreted that line to mean you registered horse bets at an off-track betting place that also sold dildos and had pac man and rooms to jack your cyberdeck in to the infomesh which sounded a lot more fun.

Nah. Arcades in adult stores are like, $1/min jackoff shantees. Neither store I worked at (in the same chain) had those basically on the principle of not wanting people to jack off under their roofs. It's a good policy. Also gloryholes.

Old truck drivers are the biggest target. It's why you see them along interstates. One of the stores I worked at was highway, cleared $40k/week in sales in 2007. I haven't worked that job in nearly 14 years, so I don't know how they're doing now. But truckers, truckers are the prime target.

The next rags to rich billionaire will be the person who invents an all day adult diaper. Amazon, 99% of call centers, computer game companies, truckers, will be buying them forever on to eliminate breaks. The only hard part is to market them.

Some kind of diaper 3d printer that uses DRM chopped recycled paper pods ($20 / !0) to make a new, flushible diaper. Pair with our Bluetooth enabled bidet to make a new diaper with every use of authorized butthole detection, but workers are required to sit in it until the legally mandated 6 hours until they can get a new one. Industrial models come with a paper mache attachment which can turn old reports and rejected resumes into pods for slightly cheaper (and it runs constantly)

Lol I'm renewing my lease and I noticed something fun attached to the end of the binding arbitration clause quote:In the event that this Section 24.2 (Agreement to Arbitrate Disputes) is found to be invalid and/or unenforceable for any reason whatsoever, any and all Claims shall be brought in a court of competent jurisdiction in the state and judicial district in which the Property is located and shall be tried without a jury. Even if you somehow weasel out of the binding arbitration you agree to not get a jury involved, for completely valid legal process reasons and not at all because any even half-decent jury would probably be full of people who hate landlords. e: Huh weird, you can opt-out of the arbitration provision (24.2) but you can't opt out of the second separate NO JURY TRIALS gently caress YOU provision (24.4), must be an oversight Shame Boy has issued a correction as of 14:12 on Jun 1, 2021 |
