I had no problem with the original JB since it was just a few plugs, but it seems the JB4 uses some vampire tap bullshit that I'm not a fan of.

I lifted my car and removed the plastic housing, it was really easy. I also added an extension to the O2 tap so I didn't tap mine directly and it worked fine. I had to remove and install mine twice and with it lifted I can do it in like 15 minutes now.

Sorry you are having issues, I was worried about it for mine but I didn't mess with the bottom plug, I just jacked it up and did it the easy way. The only reason I don't have one now is a mouse tore mine up along with a bunch of other engine wires. I might buy a new one, but also I may solder mine back together, haven't decided. I don't really want a tune, and the JB4 added more than enough power.

Yeah this is why I went JB1. Lot easier to pop off for emissions testing stuff if they actually inspect the engine bay.

Man, so do I find a local shop to replace that plug or risk taking it to the dealer? I already hosed it up bad enough to not want to try doing it myself.

I would personally buy the OEM connector online, the tool to depin it (if needed, it looks like the retention clip is the purple bit and it pulls out the side), and push the pins into the new connector

ECS tuning probably sells it, you just need to match it

Yeah if it's like some Delphi connectors i've used, the connector has multiple little pieces that snap together and you can release the pins with a special thin tool. You can use a paper clip or some shim stock in a pinch but it's like picking a lock at that point unless you've done it a bunch of times. I would probably try a local specialty shop first.

They aren't bad to replace if you're generally comfortable with such things, as long as you have space to work on them. I have un-fond memories of replacing a smaller but similar style temperature sensor clip on the E39 because I had to cram my head and body under the front bumper to get to it, but it was just annoying.

As said, dealer probably won't care wtf your were up to or be cool about it, but an indy definitely won't care what you were up to. You honestly don't need a euro specialist, those clips are common as dirt.

Thanks guys, I've calmed down a bit and will do some calling around to find the connector and tool I'll need. I've soldered poo poo on tv circuit boards before, so aside from the cramped access I should be able to manage. I think it might be time to replace my 10+ year old harbor freight jack and jack stands though, felt a little sketchy working under the car with those. Do you think it's risky to drive it around? Seems to work fine other than lack of boost, rpm aren't limited and it can get up to highway speeds so I'm guessing that means it's not in limp mode. I'm gonna borrow an obd11 to clear the codes hopefully later today and see what that does. Anything else I should potentially check?

Yeah they're designed for quick installation without soldering, so you basically just push the wires in to the right spots in the replacement connector, confirm that you have a good circuit, then slap the collar in place that locks everything down. You'll be fine, just bring your multimeter.

Got the connectors ordered from ECS, although it's gonna be at least a week before they show up. I got a spare so I can practice on the JB4 plug before swapping out the one on the car. At least they were cheap, and the tool was only 10 bucks from amazon. George the VW tech at BMS said it shouldn't be a problem to drive until I get that swapped out, so that's a relief.

You can also just practice with the JB4 itself since it has a male and female of that type of plug. I did it several times and then used a small screw driver to hold the tab while I pulled it back. But again, it was way easier to do under the car with the plastic guard off.

Hah that is no lie, this is the result of 20 min of trying to get at it from the top before I busted out the jack and stands.

Update on my JB4 boost woes, got the depinning tool and new connector and managed to get that swapped fairly easily with no drama. Unfortunately that didn't solve the problem, so I had to take it in to the dealer. They ended up replacing the boost sensor, and suspect it might actually be related to some stalling at idle issues I had last year. Car is back to stock and running great for now.

I decided before going round 2 with the JB4, I'm going to wait for this VAG connector removal tool so I don't have to worry about destroying the connector again.

I posted this before, but I bought a 2019 GTI with a manual transmission and it stalled sometimes at idle randomly. Turns out it was somewhat widespread so I asked for a replacement. They would only give me a DSG which I agreed to, but I also got the SE instead of the S and an extra package with dynamic chassis control which worked out. Your comment about stalling at idle sounds a lot like what I had.

I think it was fixed, but I wasn't going to live with a brand new car that stalled randomly so I demanded a buy back or a new car.

Yeah that sounds like exactly what I had, 2019 GTI SE w/ mt, happened probably a dozen times or so during my first month of ownership. Usually occurred when sitting idle at a stoplight and not in gear, so initially I thought it was a really sensitive clutch or I was just rusty. Took it in and the local dealer didn't know wtf was up, kicked it up the chain and VW told them to just do an oil change(?!?). I was super skeptical, but it actually never stalled again for almost a year until I hooked the jb4 up.

I dunno what I'd have done if they told me to swap for a DSG, I know it's technically faster/better but I really wanted the manual trans.

I just picked up a ‘19 Fiesta ST with 1,380 miles on it. It has the sunroof option and the premium wheels, but no Recaros, which I’m fine with given how low mileage this thing is. It was apparently traded between a dealership in Kansas and a dealership in Florida, where it was sold. It was then driven about 300 miles in Florida before coming up to Michigan, which is... odd.

It has some dings and stuff, but the interior still smells like a new car. Here’s the head scratcher though: the previous owner put Bilsteins on it. And then never really drove it. Then sold it.

I’m not complaining, because, hey, free upgrade, but I have to wonder what the loving story is here.

I’m very tempted to get a custom plate that says “FRIJ0LE,” cause it’s a black bean. Once I’m out of the Ford warranty, I’ll probably do some light mods. For now, I plan on driving it during the summer and putting it up for winter while my 250k mileage Saturn handles the snow duties.

It was hard to pass up 10k in options. I would not have done it if it was a CVT or traditional auto, and also I just wasn't that in to the manual in the GTI and I have a Miata I drive if I want a manual still.

Yeah that's a pretty sweet deal. I ended up with my '19 SE with all the options, window tint, and ceramic paint correction for the same price as a base model '20 because I was ready to walk out the door since it wasn't the color I wanted. I didn't want a white or silver car, and ended up with a combo of the two that I've grown to actually love, though I still probably would prefer the great falls green.

Saw another white/silver GTI with the black 18" pretoria wheels at the dealer this morning, and now I really really want those.

I don't like the blue with the GTI just because I don't think the grill goes well with it, but I am pretty jelous that new SEs get pretoria wheels.

Here was my S with the manual

And this is my current car, the headlights were the big upgrade, but DCC is really great for comfort and maybe one of the best options I got.

I want the Cornflower Blue but it's almost a bit too much racerboi extravagant....almost. Trying to get on a Rabbit in this color. Used Rabbit market seems to have dried up. :(

Second choice is the White Silver Metallic, but I want to see it in person. Ford has an offwhite F150 color that looks great in person, I think it's Space White.

I'm an old man, it's definitely a nice bright colour but I don't see it as boy racer (any more than any other GTI at least, which is not very as far as hot hatches go.) There's a Kona and a Crosstrek in my neighbourhood that are roughly the same colour. I notice a lot of people checking out my car but I don't think non-enthusiasts know it's supposed to be fast or anything. They just think it's a pretty Golf :3:

Despite several weeks of dumbassery, I was able to get my JB4 installed this afternoon with zero drama. Highly recommend the VAG connector tool, made it super simple to pop that sucker off. First drive in map1 I had a poo poo eating grin on my face the whole time. Gonna spend a few weeks playing around with map1 and 2 then probably run some logs to get a customized map6.

A+ would recommend

e: after trip to work today, definitely going to need some new tires sooner than later.. these all seasons that came with the car are struggling

Also someone in my neighbourhood got a new white GTI and their license place is one number off of mine. I'm trying to figure out how to become friends with them.

next step, greeb is selling me the BEC headlights off their GSW, and I need to find a used Golf R rear swaybar or maybe something from the aftermarket to tighten up handling just a bit. golf R swaybar is same size but with thicker walls supposedly. also obviously need to ditch the stock tires but I'm too cheap to throw away perfectly good tires.
