patriarchy sucks
The Ontario cell phone emergency alert system continues to be used for the sole purpose of waking me up at 4am to tell me about family custody disputes 1000km away from me.

the closest we've ever gotten to the stated use case for the system was the two times they reminded us there was a stay at home order because of the plague

the tornado warning was bang-on

i'm rarely awake at 4 and wouldn't be where i'd see anything useful anyway, but if you work at a diner or a gas station or whatever, i can totally see you maybe being useful

just not in the case where there's an eyewitness on the scene who saw you carrying someone else's kid about 50 yards away

surprisingly few tornadoes in toronto

e: i'm generally only awake at 4am when an alert that bypasses my do not disturb setting goes off twice in 20 minutes

the first time they used it ever, it was peel police deciding they could put out an apb in the form of an amber alert to find a suspect, the alert went out after they found the girl he had kidnapped (dead), and when they caught him, they shot him and called it a suicide*

*technically they said he suffered a self inflicted gunshot wound they didn't discover until after his arrest, no mention of a gun, and he died later in hospital

doesn't change the fact that the alert level they're using for these is meant for imminent danger, not amber alerts.

Custody battle gone wrong? Wake everyone in a thousand kilometer radius up at 4 am, ruin their sleep, and cause accidents the next day from drivers not getting enough sleep.

I really like Quebec, lots of francophone (ok mostly nbers tho) friends. I do take exception to literally saying "hey francophones have it just as bad, if not worse than indigenous people" on the literal day we dug up a mass grave. I don't think that is unreasonable.

Put this Nazi-lover on ignore immediately!
If they used the system properly (where the alerts they are currently using for Amber Alerts are for things like imminent attack or extreme emergencies), I'd be totally fine with it overriding do not disturb settings. The problem now is they're going to desensitize people to alerts (or have them turn their phones on airplane mode instead). I for sure didn't even bother reading the alert when it woke me up, if it had been a genuine emergency I would have had no idea.

I don't know why but I have never once received one of these warning messages. Something about my mobile account that makes me invisible to it (I've had several phones now that haven't gotten one).

My gf will get the alert, but I won't. And honestly, I'm fine with it. Getting texts at 4am saying "watch out for a white guy in a pickup truck" is the least useful information when you live in Alberta, and I already treat Covid more seriously than this government ever has.

Nah, that's your phone companys system being poorly designed. I can send a 3000 character text from my smartphone to my friends smartphone, and he receives one 3000 character text, instead of 20 smaller ones.

Thing about custody battle alerts from Ontario is I am literally halfway across the country- the kid hasn't even been missing long enough to make it this far! Even if you are a continent away from even being in the correct locus to offer assistance, rest assured that distance not enough to excuse you from caring!

but if I ask public mobile to stop then I'll never hear anything. this way I can yell at someone who might yell back at me

also I begrudgingly appreciate their simple, lowest common denominator solution that doesn't rely on checking receiving phone type and maybe getting it wrong

Jets fans are losing their poo poo that people are actually upset about the possibly life-altering injury this guy did 100% on purpose

Head injuries, concussions etc. literally gently caress you up forever, they can completely change a person's personality, attitude, everything. There's a lot of "everybody makes mistakes :kiddo: but telling his family their son's a cruel fuckup, now that is just beyond the pale " which is like cmon guys, admit it's indefensible, quit feigning outrage or sublimating your anger about the suspension into concern trolling for his family's wellbeing :nallears:

Hockey is too violent, it's not part of the game, so on and so on. gently caress the Jets, can't wait for the team to move again.
