Before the first movie came out, part of the multimedia push for The Marrix was to screen the film for a bunch of prominent sci fi authors and have then write a short story for the official website. Only authors I remember were Gaimen and Harlan Ellison, but .out of the stories eventually went with the lie being better than life. I wonder if you can still find the stories since they all went wildly divergent from where the series ended up

I wonder if they asked Grant Morrison to provide a story. Oh wait, he already did with The Invisibles. :v:

So, despite the thwomp clearly being in Whomp's Fortress, the following clip takes place in Bob-omb Battlefield. I mean, what are we to believe, that this is some sort of a magic skateboard or something? Boy, I really hope someone gets banned over that blunder.

I got this title for the dumbest fucking possible take on sea shanties. Specifically, I derailed the meme thread because sailors in the 18th century weren't woke enough for me, and you shouldn't sing sea shanties. In fact, don't have any fun ever.

°Ra is always Rankine.

°R can be Rankine or Réaumur (although that one is also written °Ré) or even Rømer (which is more often °Rø) depending on who you ask. Those are all different scales.

The book version was a lot more wild and Rimmer was even more pathetic than usual.

"Rimmer gave himself money, fame, and a stunningly beautiful wife - who was abusive and humiliatingly unfaithful. He then placed himself in a scenario where all his stocks abruptly crashed, he lost all of his money, his body was repossessed, and he was forced to occupy a female prostitute's body, then dragged into hiding from the law, experiencing verbal, physical and sexual abuse at the hands of violent criminals, and finally pimped out by them, as well as coming to realise that his idea of the perfect woman - the woman he was in fact engaged to - was the spitting image of his own mother. "

A pretty regular theme with Rimmer is that he's an absolutely miserable person whose disastrous social skills and bloated ego are a cover for and result of crippling anxiety, self-loathing and inadequacy as a result of a horribly abusive childhood. IIRC, it's implied at one point that his supposedly more successful siblings aren't actually any better, they're all just lying to the rest of the family to keep up to unrealistic expectations.

The episode with the time-travelling judge who determines whether people are worthy to exist by their own standards is an interesting one, I feel. Lister and Kryten fail for basically wasting their potential by their own standards, while the Cat is quite happy with who he is and what he contributes to the world, while Rimmer just lays out his backstory and how it messed him up, and the Judge in his form seems to sympathise- that if anything, it's surprising Rimmer is as remotely functional as he is.

You should read Zenith, which is like a prototype for a lot of Morrison's ideas that he later revisits and expands on.

Eh, the first version of the Celsius scale had the boiling point of water at 0 and the freezing point at 100C. Some friend of his convinced Celsius to flip it around.

As has been said about Rusty Venture, Rimmer needs a hug, a therapist, and to get laid. Not necessarily in that order and definitely not all from the same person.

Tell this to a mate who is incredibly high and watch their brain completely fold in on itself trying to justify why hot = up and cold = down. And why it matters. My experience with that is like trying to explain to my mother that North is not UP.

Yeah. We know NOW because of the laws of thermodynamics, but back then when the temperature scales were made we had no idea.
