Gort posted:I always thought medals and titles for the highest taxpayers each year would be a good way to incentivise paying taxes among the richest given that taxes are basically voluntary for them It would probably be a less broken way of selecting people to get into the House of Lords than the current one. For political balance though half of the intake are selected from the people with the lowest incomes in the country.

"Oh yes darling, I'm just doing my tax returns. A frighful bore, don't you know."

Grey Hunter posted:What would be interesting is if personal finances were taxed like profit. Oh, your struggling to make ends meet, no tax for you. Got 20 billion in a bank account? we're taking half of that! it would keep the money circulating. That is literally how capital gains tax works. It's just a much lower rate of course because only rich people pay it.

Point conceded, but I mean the rate should be much higher, and apply to all forms of income. drat them. The optimist in me hopes they can tighten those loop holes up. Get it on the books, rack it up later. (Not going to happen until after the revolution of course)

It should be the same rate as income tax for sure

A good first step but the devil is in the details, as they say. There will be all sorts of loopholes by the time the taxes come into effect. If it can make companies start paying some tax it's better than nothing I guess.

This is bad, but we're already getting dickheads coming out with "Well then this is obviously entirely pointless, might as well not bother ," which is infuriating (see also, climate change)

They're right, but only because every company will suddenly have a maximum profit margin of 9.99999999% every year forever.

Two exciting pieces of physics news, the UK experimental fusion temperature management seems to work and may significantly increase the lifespan of viable scale fusion reactors, and we've finally located Maxwell's demon and it's not what you might expect:

I don't like hot sausage rolls anyway, though the existential crisis implicit in them having intent of any sort is putting me off them at any temperature.

I enjoyed the implication that the sausage rolls had agency in the matter. It would mean exciting things for thermodynamics.
