aside from how goddamn weird it is, it's a fascinatingly sad juxtaposition with canticle. walter m. miller jr. lost his faith bad in the intervening years between the two novels, and wild horse woman is darkly critical of the church that canticle held so dear. miller took his own life before the manuscript got to print, so the final chapter had to be ghostwritten, but it fits in well with the tone and writing of the rest of the work. it's just an oddly compelling work of fiction to me for a lot of reasons

the last time i saw something in the sky that i could not explain was in the early 10s. i was on a road trip with my long term partner- we were headed east out of seattle on our way to chinook, mo. i got off of 90 at some point to see some landscape and head a little more northward. i remember getting a tad lost on a res with no cell signal and we wound up at a campground somewhere in very rural northeast washington state.

the sun was setting by the time we got in, and we were stoked cause we got a spot right on the edge of what i thought was a river. its river country. im not sure now, and my memory of what the place looked like in the morning daylight is pretty nil, maybe it was the edge of a lake.

we see a few groups of folks driving through the campground to the site but its really pretty sparse. anyway after we got set up i headed down the very steep bank to take a dip. i was already crouched down by the time i got to the edge so i just eased myself in and instantly sank into thick vicsous silt up to my thighs. i managed to grasp onto the ledge and pull myself up and back onto the bank. true or not, in the moment it felt like i had just come close to dying in the dumbest way.

so i get up after the requisite staring at the stars contemplating saying jesus christ after a scare like that and start heading back up the bank hopped up on adrenaline- i see a very bright white light very low to the ground coming towards me. for the first time since any of this i shout up to my partner "hey hey hey do you see this??" and start scrambling up the bank.

i begin to notice the shapes of birds around the edges of the light, quite a few of them, and theyre all very still none of them are flapping their wings. they dont even look like theyre gliding theyre so stiff and linear in their flight. and the light is getting closer and its all completely silent except my partner shouting "what the poo poo!?" a couple of times

of course ive been into saucers since i was tiny baby and im always looking up at night. saw some poo poo as a kid this isnt my first rodeo. in the moment i clearly remember thinking "crop duster" but i couldnt make it stick. this is really, really bizarre because of how low it is and how bright. if this was a plane it would be headlights and this isnt shaped like a cone. i would have heard it before i saw it. its a completely silent ball of white light surrounded by the silhouettes of large water fowl sized birds.

it flew right over us in a straight line, never perceptively ascending or descending. i watched it unblinking for at least thirty seconds as it approached, flew over, and flew away. if i had been alone i wouldve written it off, but my partner saw the exact same thing and wasnt flooded with fight or flight chemicals.

afterwards i was high as a kite elated but the SO was very, extremely unnerved and they basically demanded we get into the tent and sleep immediately. like...very upset and me just being giddy as a school girl was making it way worse it so yeah. so we zip up the tent and i zip up my lip and pass right out.

it's a really odd piece of fiction for its time and place in that it's the "Canticle extended universe" that Miller clearly had in his head as a fully fleshed out secondary world, and struggled to communicate after the success of his first book. quote:

Analysis[edit]
Klass's investigation of the MJ-12 documents found that Robert Cutler was actually out of the country on the date he supposedly wrote the "Cutler/Twining memo", and that the Truman signature was "a pasted-on photocopy of a genuine signature — including accidental scratch marks — from a memo that Truman wrote to Vannevar Bush on October 1, 1947". Klass dismissed theories that the documents were part of a disinformation campaign as "ridiculous", saying they contained numerous flaws that could never fool Soviet or Chinese intelligence. Other discrepancies noted by Klass included the use of a distinctive date format that matched one used in Moore's personal letters, and a conversation reported by Brad Sparks in which Moore confided that he was contemplating creating and releasing some hoax Top Secret documents in hopes that such bogus documents would encourage former military and intelligence officials who knew about the government's (alleged) UFO coverup to break their oaths of secrecy.[6]
The FBI began its own investigation of the supposed "secret" documents and quickly formed doubts as to their authenticity. The United States Air Force Office of Special Investigations stated that no such committee had ever been authorized or formed, and that the documents were "bogus". The FBI subsequently declared the MJ-12 documents to be "completely bogus".[2]
Later in 1996, a document called the MJ-12 "Special Operations Manual" circulated among ufologists. It is also widely considered to be a fake and "a continuation of the MJ-12 myth".[7]
Ufologists Linda Moulton Howe and Stanton T. Friedman believe the MJ-12 documents are authentic. Friedman examined the documents and has argued that the United States government has conspired to cover up knowledge of a crashed extraterrestrial spacecraft.[3]
According to journalist Howard Blum the name "Majestic 12" had been prefigured in the UFO community when Bill Moore asked National Enquirer reporter Bob Pratt in 1982 to collaborate on a novel called MAJIK-12. Because of this, Blum writes, Pratt had always been inclined to think the Majestic 12 documents a hoax.[8]
Scientific skeptic author Brian Dunning investigated the history of the subject, and reported his findings in the 2016 Skeptoid podcast episode "The Secret History of Majestic 12". He cited ufologist Bill Moore’s suspicion that, rather than a hoax perpetrated by the UFO community, the papers were actually part of a disinformation campaign of the US government meant to deflect attention from secret Air Force projects.[9]

Estimated accelerations range from almost 100g
to 1000s of gs with no observed air disturbance, no sonic booms, and no evidence of excessive heat commensurate with even the minimal estimated energies. In accordance with observations, the estimated parameters describing the behavior of these craft are both anomalous and surprising. The extreme estimated flight characteristics reveal that these observations are either fabricated or seriously in error, or that these craft exhibit technology far more advanced than any known craft on Earth.

The observed flight characteristics of these craft are consistent with the flight characteristics required for interstellar travel, i.e., if these observed accelerations were sustainable in space, then these craft could easily reach relativistic speeds within a matter of minutes to hours and cover interstellar distances in a matter of days to weeks, proper time.

If you’re traveling at 1 g (not 100 or 1000 like the UAP’s) you can reach the moon in 2 hours, Mars in 2 days and Pluto in 10 days.

now multiply all of that by 100 or 1000. That makes Pluto a day trip, and the nearest star system would be reachable in 6 months (ship time, on earth it would be 8 years)

quote:

An important role of the USS Princeton is to act as air defense protection for the strike group. The Princeton was equipped with the SPY-1 radar system which provided situational awareness of the surrounding airspace. The main incident occurred on 14 November 2004, but several days earlier, radar operators on the USS Princeton were detecting UAPs appearing on radar at about 80,000+ feet altitude to the north of CSG11 in the vicinity of Santa Catalina and San Clemente Islands. Senior Chief Kevin Day informed us that the Ballistic Missile Defense (BMD) radar systems had detected the UAPs in low Earth orbit before they dropped down to 80,000 feet [23]. The objects would arrive in groups of 10 to 20 and subsequently drop down to 28,000 feet with a several hundred foot variation, and track south at a speed of about 100 knots [23]. Periodically, the UAPs would drop from 28,000 feet to sea level (estimated to be 50 feet), or under the surface, in 0.78 s. Without detailed radar data, it is not possible to know the acceleration of the UAPs as a function of time as they descended to the sea surface. However, one can estimate a lower bound on the acceleration, by assuming that the UAPs accelerated at a constant rate halfway and then decelerated at the same rate for the remaining distance as in (2) and (3).

[nerd math]

The integrand is the exponential of a quartic polynomial in t, which was solved numerically. Assigning a uniform prior probability for the acceleration over a wide range of possible accelerations results in a posterior that is proportional to the likelihood (13) above resulting in a maximum likelihood analysis

[hieroglyphics]

which gave an estimate of a = 5600 (− 1190 + 2270 g) , as illustrated in Figure 3A.

We also employed sampling for which the change in altitude and the elapsed time were described by Gaussian distributions with y ± σ y = 8530 ± 90 m and t ′ ± σ t = 0.78 ± 0.08 s , respectively. The most probable acceleration was found to be 5370 − 820 + 1430 g while the mean acceleration was found to be 5950 g (Figure 3B).

Poher, C. Analysis of Radar And Air-Visual UFO Observations on 24 October 1968 at Minot AFB, North Dakota, USA.

quote:

pre:
During the two occasions when the B-52 was in close proximity to the UFO, the B-52
VHF radio transmission with Radar Approach Control (RAPCON) was interrupted, while the
reception of incoming communications was unaffected. These communications took place on a
stated UHF military frequency, although they were actually in the VHF band at 270 Mhz.7
The first loss of radio transmission occurred near the WT fix, at the time when the UFO
closed on the B-52’s left wing, reducing its distance from 3 to 1 nautical mile (nm). The loss of
transmission continued for more than 16 nm, or about 4 minutes, if the airspeed of the B-52
during the descent to the runway was 250 knots (460 km / h, or 285 mph). This speed is plausible
because the B-52 was descending from 20,000 to 3200 feet. As soon as the UFO disappeared
from the radarscope, VHF communications returned to normal.

The second instance occurred when the B-52 was at its closest proximity to the UFO
during the flyover at 4:35 (CDT), at an altitude that was less than 1 nm.8 In both instances,
neither the onboard instrumentation, nor the radio reception appeared to have been affected.
Taken together, these two VHF transmission failures pose an interesting physical effect that will
be examined in more detail later in this study.

[...]

5.9. The Loss of VHF Transmission
The dimensions of the radar echo (280 x 140 meters) are not the actual dimensions of the
UFO. The radar dimensions represent a volume of air in which the electronic density was
sufficient to deviate the 9000 MHz radar waves. However, the presence of free electrons did not
limit itself to the region surrounding the UFO, which is approximately 15 % of the distance
separating the B-52 and the UFO during the sequence of radar photographs.

It is probable that the electronic density diminished progressively at some distance from
the UFO in a way proportional to the square or cube of distance. Since the B-52 was situated
about seven times farther away from the UFO than the zone of ionization, it is probable that the
electronic density near the B-52 was equal to at least 1/50 or 1/350 of the electronic density of
the cloud of ions that produced the radar echo. Evidently there was a considerable density of
electrons around the B-52, probably in the order of at least 1015 electrons per cubic meter,
(which is the previous value of Nc divided by 350). Consequently, the VHF communications
antenna of the B-52 operating at 270 MHz was immersed in a relatively conducting gas. This
did not hinder reception of the VHF communications from RAPCON, because the
corresponding electrical field was insufficient to perturb the atmospheric ions at only a few
millivolt VHF voltage at the receiving antenna.

However, when the B-52 copilot pressed the button on his microphone, the transmitter
onboard the B-52 was sending its entire power to the quarter wave antenna. In this instance, the
amplitude of the antenna’s local electrical field was increased, which immediately attracted the
ions and the electrons encircling the antenna. With a thick layer of ions encircling the
transmission antenna, all of the transmitting power was absorbed in the agitation of ions and the
heating of air. Therefore, the radiated power was very weak. In other words, the radiating
impedance of the antenna was bypassed by the bath of ions as if it had been plunged into a
conducting fluid driver such as water. Another way to understand this phenomenon is to consider
the critical frequency of ionized air by applying N = Nc /350 to equation (49):
Fc2 = 80.7 N = 80.7 . 2.9 . 1015 ==> Fc = 484 MHz (49 bis)
In this case the critical frequency (484 MHz) is superior to the frequency of
communications (270 MHz) and the wave is returned and absorbed rather than being transmitted.

In addition, the transponder transmitted without a problem because it operated above the critical
frequency over 1 GHz. It is remarkable that these considerations of plasma physics are
completely consistent with many described facts in this case.
