Fluffy Bunnies posted:My tiny kidney dog decided to have a pretty rough night last night (hugely elevated heart rate, hard breathing, still not willingly eating, etc) so that probably means we're not far off. Vet said 1-2 months anyhow. It's already been 2+ weeks. I don't think it's irresponsible to plan a Disney trip in November (maybe better to plan for -land vs -world), but might I suggest planning to go somewhere that you feel is already taking things seriously today? We did a long weekend in Puerto Rico just before they lifted a lot of their restrictions (coincidental, just when we were fully vaccinated). Vaccinated or not, we had to test to get in. Solid vaccination rates, hard curfew, mandatory masking, temperature checks to get into stores. A lot of it is theatre, of course, but it really helped to be in an environment where I felt that there was a legit effort to mitigate risks. I don't think you're even gonna see a lot of that in November (particularly in Florida), so it might be good to plan for somewhere that already feels... okay in June.

Deep Glove Bruno posted:This isn't as well considered as it sounds when you consider what age range people get pregnant in and look at what covid does to pregnant women and their fetuses. It basically makes them a vulnerable population and even minor poo poo like a sustained fever can give the child permanent brain damage and delayed development. I don't think it's okay letting young people be the guinea pigs for unrestrained spread and new variants when so much is still coming out about long covid, new symptoms, and so on. Not to mention what everyone has been saying about the likelihood of stronger and stronger variants. Well good news because that's not what we're doing. I mean we're taking a massive risk by basically trying to race the vaccinations against the spread of the virus, but you're talking like we've just gone "Welp all the Tory voters are vaccinated now, gg, see you all in October for flu jabs". With jabs now open to 25-29 year olds we're still easily on track to have the whole adult population and a significant chunk of the 12-18 population with at least a first dose in them* before the start of autumn when the weather starts to work against us. However you do raise an interesting point more generally - I wonder what the last year will have done to fertility rates? They're known to increase when people are under stress, and obviously lockdown and boredom is going to have increased the chances of conception among couples, but then lack of socialising is going to have driven down the chances for accidental pregnancies and planned ones are likely to have been at least put off while everyone knows the hospitals are going to be full. It's going to be an interesting one for demographers to pick over in future, certainly. * Speaking of demographics, this is one thing that might come to bite us in the arse because while the country-wide run-rate is loping along nicely, there are stark differences between places because of the age-based way we've been doling them out. To illustrate - we're at 77% with at least a first dose nationwide, but there's a massive range from 84% in East Derbyshire to just 44% in Tower Hamlets. This isn't a factor of Derbyshire - a mostly rural area - being much more organised than Tower Hamlets - the heart of the East End and site of Canary Wharf, making it simultaneously the third-most-expensive and 2nd-most-deprived borough in London. Instead it tracks almost perfectly with demographics - the median age in Derbyshire is 43, while in Tower Hamlets it's 30, the youngest in the country. The problem is that nobody seems to have told Tower Hamlets this. They've chugged along quite happily keeping up with the national average in terms of *eligible* people vaccinated, but suddenly we're 6 months in with only 2 to go but we've only got half the borough done. Tower Hamlets happens to be where I live and I've volunteered in our (singular) mass vaccination centre, with the others being run out of pharmacist shops and GP surgeries. We need to run at 10k/wk for the next 10 weeks, and the current rate has been not much better than 1.5k/wk. I mean fortunately we've got the biggest mass-vaccination centre in the country just a quick DLR journey down the road at the Excel Centre but I don't think even that has the capacity to take up the slack just for us, let alone the other 8 inner-London boroughs in mostly-similar positions. Oh yeah and we've got the Delta variant running rampant too, so that's fun. I assume and sincerely hope that we're going to open more mass centres - maybe staffed by people from places like Shetland who are getting very close to 100% done, which could be the basis for a hilarious fish-out-of-water film - but it really hasn't seemed, in the first week of under-30 availablility, that anyone at all seems to have actually spotted this coming.

Fertility rates are currently the lowest on record across pretty much the developed world and even with a post-covid birth boom will be unlikely to go back to where they were.

i took the bus for the first time in over a year (i generally walk or skate everywhere, even before the pandemic). it was surprising how little anxiety i felt about it. alternate seating probably helps, but i think there's an eagerness to get over this whole mess. it was also my first time in a bookstore since all this began. picked up joan didion's "slouching towards bethlehem" and "havana noir", a collection of hardboiled stories set in cuba

I lost a decent amount of weight during the pandemic but I gained it all back over the course of the last two months because my in-laws were staying with and I started drinking more, stress eating and late night snacking because of stress-induced insomnia. And because I had basically 0 control over what I got to eat in a given day.

My weight was all up and down during the pandemic. I dropped 20 pounds when I had the virus right at the start, gained most of it back over the course of the summer, then started a job where I walk 10-15 miles a day so I’m back way down. I need to start going to the gym, though, not keeping up on that once everything closed means my knee is loving killing me most of the time.

Oh drat this is pretty awesome I think you need more bars though. And more squat racks, can never have too many squat racks! I finally got off my rear end and made a home gym, not nearly on that level, but getting back into it. I should have done it long ago. It's a bit tight, I have to really pay attention when moving the bar somewhere so I don't put it through a monitor or wall lol All the uh really heavy weights are out of frame, I lift so much weight I can't fit it all in

Someone at work is saying she won’t get the vaccine because she planning to start a family soon and is worried about the vaccine affecting her fertility. Personally I’d be more concerned about the risk of getting covid before or during the pregnancy but I can’t find any studies on the effects of covid on unborn babies. Has anyone seen and good information on this?

vyst posted:This is anecdotal research but back when people were into this question I read that the mom can't transmit covid to the baby and if the mom survives the baby seems to be getting antibodies as well. So assuming the mom survives, it sounds like at least the baby doesn't have to suffer for her stupidity while it's too early for covid specific studies of this, mothers who get sustained fevers during pregancy especially the first trimester have a way higher chance of a developmentally delayed or brain damaged child and it's likely true of covid too. pregnant women are also more prone to hospitalization with covid and with needing a ventilator. during the third trimester covid can induce early labor which also can gently caress a kid right up.
