You can learn, it's not hard.

For me the hardest thing about switching back and forth from left to right hand drive is I end up hitting the windshield wipers instead of the turn signal stalk.

Some European manufacturers don't switch them over on their RHD cars, which makes for a fun rental experience once you've gotten used to both sets of reactions :negative:

Turn signals is the window arm.

It helps that my only manual vehicle is RHD, so I just rest my left hand near the shifter to avoid.

Holden Commodore was on the right, their smaller cars would be on the left if they were Opel/Vauxhall sourced, on the right if Daewoo.
The Japanese mostly get it right, on the right, except for a few weirdos, like diesel Subaru’s, which for this market were UK spec, so on the left while every other Subaru were in the right! I’m pretty sure the older Honda Accord wagons and coupes which were US built also got it right.

Went to the specialist Delica repair/importer in my town to pick up a bunch of miscellaneous maintenance parts for my Delica and had an interesting chat with the guy. I said I noticed on his website that he's selling Delica's on his website for CAD$20-22,000 which was quite a bit more than the ~$14-16,000 he was selling them for just a few years ago. I asked him if its because Delicas are getting more expensive in Japan and he said it's def the case. He said more Americans are able to buy them now and the price is going way up. He also said there was low supply.

The wild thing he said was that Americans are now buying 1997s, which cannot be imported right now, but he said they're storing them for a year until they can be imported, then bringing them over.

So now what Canadians gotta buy 1998s and hope Americans don't have the patience.

I remember 2JZ-GTE Aristos everywhere for 5 grand. Now you can't even get a 2JZ-GTE engine for less than $8k.

Say this every time it comes up but both my wife and I have been daily driving manual transmission RHD cars here in the USA since 2016. You're just sitting 3-4~ feet to the right, using the same pedal layout and doing the exact same shift pattern, just with your left hand. Besides:

Tyro posted:

this is the true 'whoops made a mistake' of RHD. Batting 100% on people that buy their first RHD car from us and do this on the test drive even though I warn them they will do it.

luminalflux posted:

As mentioned it's the Japan toll thing. You know how there is a bunch of videos of people's RHD cars and when they turn the key a Japanese woman says a little phrase? That's one of these ETC boxes saying "Don't forget your card"! and people buy them for big bucks on eBay. Someone in Australia makes a little box that says the phrase so you can have the sound using an arduino board but that seems strange to me as it isn't JDM anymore, you're just posing.
Personally I hate the stupid boxes and their dumb chimes and 'uninstall' them on any vehicle we keep for any length of time.

Said this before already too, but we are, right now, in climbing the peak of a nostaglia-driven things-we-didn't-get-here mix that's mirroring the muscle car boom. Just this time we also have cars as a subscription creeping up, along with incredibly complicated, high-stressed lower displacement engines with big price tags on new cars which adds in a big pile of 'dont make them like they used to' and 'do you really own your car maaaaaaaan' and it means something this time.
Basically prices aren't going to go down, not any time soon. Seriously implore anyone thinking about getting something to do it sooner rather than later because all the Toyota trucks and SUVs we've brought in? Some of them are worth double what they were a year ago. DOUBLE.

If I were Canadian I'd be buying absolutely every single 1997 Land Cruiser and Hilux I could find. Once they become US legal throw them up on BaT and $$$$$$$$$$$$$.

I def see the opportunity. I think in the early pages of this thread I was still musing about a side biz of bringing over just Jimnys. Heaps of people here love Jeeps and I think they'd love the Jimny too. The Land Cruiser yep even a bigger audience.

I'd strongly consider it except I'm not much of a mechanic and storing cars around here is expensive af. I think if you really wanted to make $$$$ doing it you'd need to be like the Delica repairman/importer guy here and have the time to be able to fix up a lot of stuff yourself.

Been inspecting a lot of trucks and campers that are 4’s which used to mean something and they turned out to be crap. Even last night. And they are going for much more sold than I used to pay - I’ve come around, get an inspection.

Last Delica I won a week or 2 ago inspection didn’t come through and what was marked as a u1 is nowhere near…very happy with the purchase and the Delica but don’t trust anything.

Honda and Nissan Osaka seem to grade very hard and usually inspections reveal the vehicle is way better than the sheet says, but USS lately their 4 doesn’t mean anything to me at least anymore.

I tended to avoid the JDM TYTE stuff, Skylines and Supras, mostly because they are too expensive and I don't care enough about them. Now though it turns out that all the hyper trash is there, because it was not like this at all even two~ years ago. Demand is insanely high. I wonder if Land Cruisers and Hiluxes will follow suit, suppose we'll see. I guess I'm partially lying as well since I have the Cresta ready to be picked up at port next week. :toot:

Today while looking at the Surf's owners manual (aka waving the translator app over it) I discovered that the Surf has the center locking diff option. It seems obvious now:

That's another feather in its cap. Took off the roof carrier for better driving and also so it's out of the way when it's detailed. Now going to put in a full belt order as age has ruined them. I assume the timing belt is technically fine since it's so much more robust than the other belts, but both the alternator and AC belts are slipping. Never ton a timing belt job on a KZ but it should certainly be much easier than anything before. Single cam and completely separated from the crank and water pump. I wonder if I can get this done without removing the radiator, probably not.

Im in Australia, i imported my first Soarer (a proper grade 4.5 B black-on-black) back in 2005 and generally keep an eye on a couple of importers here. Lately they've both been saying the USS gradings arent worth the paper they're written on.

The big problem is you guys in the US are really getting the dregs of the popular '90s models, thats all that left in Japan now. I mean this thread is evidence the more obscure stuff can still be had in reasonable quality but anything on the shopping list of JDM turbo cars is a minefield.

Even Soarers now - theres just a trickle, a tiny fraction of the numbers that used to go through the auctions every day

Pretty much but even back in the early 2000’s there were plenty of dodgy importers here who would sell complete poo poo and dress it up like it was amazing.

It’s a shame most of it was so cheap because lots of it just got thrashed and scrapped or broken for parts.

Having driven variants of both vans, the Hiace feels and drives like a more modern vehicle, as you’d expect being a generation newer. The Hiace will be more reliable and probably easier to find parts for. Not that the Nissan is unreliable as such, but y’know, Toyota commercial vehicle.

One trap for these cab forward vans. They can easily catch stone chips above the windscreen, which left untreated can result in rust around the windscreen frame. Delicas are the worst, but something to keep an eye on for a keeper.

We got a four door car today as well, a little different than an Integra Type R though:

1992 JZX90 Toyota Cresta Tourer V, absolutely completely original and unmodified. 5 speed manual, 77,000~ miles, dark green, dirty and in fantastic shape. Previously single owner did us a solid and changed the oil right before they sent it to auction, I guess to be nice? Have all original keys, original manuals and a stack of maintenance history going back to new. A broken-in set of Potenza RE-71R are wrapped around the OEM wheels. It needed fuel is all, and now it just needs a deep clean, a polish and a wax. Non smoker too!
This car is a monster. Maybe it's just because we are usually puttering around in slow diesels but this thing is the most athletic, confident vehicle we've imported. We had the SW20 MR2 with the third generation 3SGTE and that was quick. This 1JZ-GTE though, in this Cresta, feels like and endless well of power when you put the pedal down. There is a substantial feeling behind it, like the hand of god in the small of your back surging you forward as you row the gears, your eyes nervously looking at the speedometer and trying to work out how fast 140 kph is in mph when you shift into 5th.
I'm pretty surprised at how nice this thing is, and how intoxicating the 1JZ-GTE really is. Also surprised to find the muffler to nowhere underneath it but I suppose it's a resonator to kill droning? Seems goofy but then again, it is unmodified which is almost impossible to find at all, and that's just looking for pictures of them on the internet.
