I saw Netflix is adding the 3 Gundam compilation movies this month

it would be nice if they added the Reconquista in G films — it’s been a while since the series came out and I’d watch it recut

Also watching 0080 put 0083: stardust memory in my YouTube algorithm and I've been watching that.

0083 sucks rear end and its hilarious how many unforced errors they made writing-wise that the manga adaptation fixed with the most minor of changes (like having the protagonist actually win the zaku vs gm wargame in episode 1)

The deal with the Reconguista movies is so dumb. Instead of doing US releases like all other Gundams, they had put English subs on the Japanese blurays and let one US website sell them directly. At Japanese prices.

A silly little mouse!
I don't see the point of the 0079 compilation movies. You somehow make it too short to fit in all the fun stuff, yet simultaneously make it long enough at three full length films that you're not really saving any tie by watching it instead of just watching the series. Those "Mobile Armor of the Week" and "Jerks on speeder bikes with C4 are Gundams most dangerous foe" make the show.

No, they also did that for Gundam UC. Kinda. IIRC the Unicorn release wasn't limited to one retailer and they weren't the expensive limited editions, they were "cheaper" but still like 50 bucks each regular editions. They didn't do it for any of the Gundam TV shows or OVAs or movies that have been released since then.

Oh it's bad alright, really the anime getting just enough right was what launched it to (international) prominence imo. Some manga that are bad are inexplicably popular.

hmm, its solid at the start and impressive how it manages to put some big twists right in plain sight without it being obvious until you know what they are

and keeps going for awhile, though it falls apart eventually (possibly after christa's story ends and she just sort of sits in the background using her newfound self-actualization and political power to turn into exactly what she just rejected being- a figurehead with no ability to affect the world except by being a virtuous symbol of femininity)

actually given how often he wrote out any female character who was too strong, i think the ideals the author put forward by drawing lots of ripped women and such sort of collapsed under the pressure of success.

Studio Wit is just that good. Give them a manga that's really good like Vinland Saga and it's the best anime of 2019.

That said, they acquired some deserved early notoriety for their productions going to poo poo whenever the episode count first entered the double digits (Seraph of the End, The Rolling Girls, and the first season of Attack on Titan), and their adaptations are often a bit direct and literal, using panels as storyboards rather than getting truly creative and mapping over parts of a manga that don't work out quite so well in animation (AOT, Vinland Saga, and Ancient Magus Bride have all had these problems). They're a solid studio, but they're not as reliably spectacular at adaptive storytelling as, say, KyoAni or UFOTable (the latter of whom had to put a lot more extra effort into making Demon Slayer a megahit than Wit did with Attack on Titan).

Eh, it has it's up and downs and the dialogue and especially the pacing of same was always kind of bad, but it also had some of the best uses of comics as a medium and of the three big curveballs it only fumbled the last.

Edit:

Yeah, I think there were two episodes that the characters spent threatened by the cannons on the wall. They really should have cut a bit of the monologueing to make it flow better, but the same can be said for the comic itself. Just having people shut the gently caress up for a bit would also have improved the ending, come to think of it.

aot has bad art at the start, though i think the artist always captures motion well which is basically what im after in manga and animations
i think by the end the art is really good. it very vaguely reminds me of League of Extraordinary Gentlemen which is one of my fav drawn comics

the entire plot is quite bad though and whenever anyone goes into a multipage dialogue its gonna be extremely dumb. its one of those mangas where any time they start to explain whats going on it makes it worse than if it was just left up to intepretation

i like the whole arc where you see things from the bad guys side though and find out that it wasn't really a plan or anything its a comedy of errors by brainwashed child soldiers

lol I had forgotten about the episodes of Attack on Titan that weren't finished when they were supposed to go to air, so TV stations close to the studio got better versions with more finished animation than studios further away.

Yeah everything about the child soldiers aspect and Reiner coming to grips with everything he's done and trying to reach Falco and Gabi about the reality of what they're actually being asked to do is phenomenal

The rest of the plot is laid out mostly really well but it kinda sucks outside of the child soldier revelation

MHA had a winning formula with "school for superheroes" but the school stuff was always far in the background. Especially after the majority of Deku's classmates turn out to pretty much be irrelevant.

I don't think Horikoshi had a plan when he started writing MHA and I don't think he has one now.

gloriously hot take but i think the vast majority of shonen jump writers don't have a plan at the start. one piece might have, but given how many of those get cancelled early, and how many are chasing trends trying to stay alive etc, it wouldn't surprise me that the idea is "do well enough to stay around, figure it out after that"
