All going well at GB News...

https://www.theguardian.com/media/2021/jun/15/brands-pull-ads-from-gb-news-tv-channel-over-content-concerns

quote:

Brands pull ads from GB News TV channel over content concerns
Ikea, Grolsch and Kopparberg have suspended adverts due to station’s perceived conflict with their values

GB News, the television channel that launched this week with backing from pro-Brexit tycoons and a mission to produce “anti-woke” US-style news content, is facing an advertiser backlash after big consumer brands including Ikea, Nivea and Grolsch said they would pull their adverts from the network.

Fronted by a clutch of familiar names including the former BBC and Sky presenters Andrew Neil and Kirsty Gallacher, GB News, which launched on Sunday evening, is pitching itself as an alternative to the mainstream media with a focus on generating opinion and controversy, rather than original reporting.

However, activists are already calling for boycotts of brands that advertise on the channel, on the grounds that they believe it is hoping to monetise divisive political issues and to push the boundaries of UK TV news regulations, which require politically balanced broadcasts.

That doesn't sound legal in any way, shape or form. It's good that you're standing up for her. What's the betting that if she did say something, Mr I Don't Like Disagreement would find terminate her apprenticeship?

In related Bad Boss news, one was complaining about the lockdown because 60% efficacy (i.e. with AZ) against the Delta variant was enough to achieve herd immunity. Which might be true, if 100% of the total population had been fully vaccinated. Meanwhile, over 200 people missed their appointments at the local vaccine centre this weekend because they were watching football.

In February last year he dragged me into an office, told me off for "scaremongering" and told me it wasn't my place to tell other staff to wash their hands, or to decide off my own back to take extra precautions (using hand sanitizer, wiping down a shared desk before I used it). He said that Covid was going to be just like the Millennium Bug - a lot of fuss and wasted money and then literally nothing would happen. It was at this point I realised that he wasn't only a horrible man, but utterly, utterly stupid as well. At the meeting the day before lockdown was announced, when everyone was arguing for WFH except him and one other director, he yelled at me "[SANFORD] I AM NOT WASTING MY MONEY TO PREVENT YOUR PARENTS CATCHING A COLD."

Not to defend brands, but the few I've seen respond to this basically said that they pre-pay for X amount of ad hours and it just goes on various content networks. Given GB news is brand new, it just got generic ads from companies, but they are now pulling them specifically. It seems sincere enough, and the last thing any marketing department wants is to be viewed as "controversial" in their home land.

gently caress knows how Fox news gets ads then?

Speaking of ads has anybody actually listened to LBC? Not just clips of one of the right-wing twats on there but the actual station? I had to go on a road trip with my boss a few years ago and he had it on in the car... The ads betray exactly who the station is for. I remember one ad that played several times over the course of the 4hrs of driving we did that day: It was for a company that would send somebody round your house to value your wine collection.

Lots of the other ads were for like, leasing a Merc or something like that. All massively Tory poo poo, basically.

What does surprise me is that their production values are just so bad. Studio lighting is awful. Sound is echoey. Graphic design is laughable. I know it's a grift but you'd think they could have spent a modest amount of money on the people needed for production values that at least match your average YouTuber, because I can name any number of channels from people who discuss politics, to ASMR, to Let's Players, to folks that do sciencey stuff like Kurgesagt or history channels from the Mongolian Horde to Super Mario Bros speedruns that do a far far better job.

As thread lighting guy I should be commenting on that, but it's very obviously terrible to anyone with eyes. Instead I'm baffled by lack of visual hook in the big bar at the bottom. When people share screenshots or videos-with-thumbnails of BBC or Sky News, it's immediately clear what channel it's from. This is just a mess of blah with a tiny gbnews uk at the bottom, below what looks like the corner of the FLAG that was dropped in some bleach.

Are they relying on people recognizing it from the murky white people instead?

Been checking the UK Covid numbers again and some more cause for cautious optimism:

Cases over the last week seem surprisingly stable at around 7,500 per day: the sudden increase we saw a couple of weeks back seems to have levelled off. Is that a blip, or will it continue like that?

June 15th cases - increase of +245% vs May 15th (7,671 vs 2,221 - 7 day averages).
June 13th hospital cases - increase of +14% vs May 13th (1,136 vs 998).
June 15th deaths - decrease of -19% vs May 15th (9 vs 11 - 7 day averages).

I'm still very struck at how this most recent surge in cases is still failing to translate into an increase in deaths - very different from previous patterns, so far.

Note: to put the hospitalisation figures into context, these peaked in January at around 39,000 people, so even with a 14% increase in the last month, numbers remain absolutely tiny compared to the January wave.

The case surge is among younger people than the previous waves. The big worry was that this was the case with the leading edge of the last waves (for obvious reasons - younger people tend to work higher-risk service-sector jobs), but *so far* the transfer to the older (now vaccinated) population hasn't seemed to happen.

Now the worry is that this younger cohort is ending up in hospital at a considerably higher rate than they were in the previous waves. It's possible that Delta is actually more dangerous to younger people than other variants, but it's also possible that without quite such aggressive triage that people are being admitted this time round that would have been told to go home and take their chances before - unfortunately all we can do is wait and see if this is the case or if Delta is actually more dangerous to younger people than other variants.

e: And vaccines will be offered to 18-25 year olds from Friday.

Deaths from infections picked up in may-june won't start hitting the morgues until July/August. And case rate is among the younger cohorts, so while the fatality rate is lower, it will still cause lifelong heart/lung issues for those who get serious cases.

Right enough that more cases hasn't meant (many) more deaths, but the number of infected people is rising, and the rate at which its rising is getting faster.
