Yeah Japan just gave 1.25 mil home made AZ to Taiwan. They started administered AZ to the oldest seniors first. 20+ died in the last 2 days ( not saying the AZ is the cause of dead but that's the big news in Taiwan right now.)

Are you counting AZ in the EU exports?

lol @ Japan. Is the LDP trying to get lynched? Like 80% of the population want the Olympics cancelled and no one who's too young to have fought in WW2 is vaccinated yet. And they just send over vaccines to insert themselves in a dickwaving contest between China and Taiwan?

In Russian pogrom is just a regular word and doesn't necessarily have the race riot, ethnic cleansing/genocide connotation to it.

Also to be fair, the destruction of property is a common part of pogroms too.

Not to defend Putin, but him using pogrom as a word probably doesn't have the same context and meaning as an english speaker using pogrom.

There's probably a good deal of implied connotation since it it seems to have gained wide currency describing the persecution of Jews beginning in the late 1880s, but yeah, the literal is just po serving as "a" (or more gramatically correct, "to have gone through with a") + grom "raid, ransack". So standard right wing politician "so you object to that word, well are you denying it was a riot, or are you denying it was violent? :agesilaus:" territory.

* "Noynoy" refers to Benigno S. Aquino, Duterte's predecessor - Duterte and his supporters have a penchant for always finding a way to blame his administration for whatever current issue is a problem in-the-now.

* it's annoying that this person manages to come to the completely correct conclusion that if you don't have enough vaccines, that your non-vaccine pandemic strategy should be maintained/improved so that you're not trying to vaccinate your way out of cases, but they're using it as a counter-argument against the idea that the US bears some responsibility for constricted vaccine supplies.

It really just falls under the same thing as the response from some Chinese outlet along the lines of "We support civil order, and are against any sort of mass protest/uprising"

Edit: Although within context you can totally argue that Putin is a white supremacist or something since he mentions the 1/6 riot in a political protest. In both cases he does say "These are the kinds of things we don't want happening within Russian territory."

Edit2: And yeah pogrom got world wide infamy after the race riots in the Russian Empire attacking the Jewish population, but I assume English speakers can use it to describe any race riot for example the Tulsa Massacre.

Edit3: Also uh BLM is totally a hollowed out lib org I thought, and he was talking about political organizations as such. Ok, he does call it a movement though, so I am probably wrong on this one.

fun fact south korea has gone insanely xenophobic over the last few years prior to moon there was no serious antiimmigrant force in south korean politics

which isnt to say that moon himself hates immigrants liberals just hosed with the immigration laws for no reason and have been cultivating a hawkish stance on china to maintain the alliance with the united states

the result is poo poo like this where now they cant even pass laws that would give citizenship to ethnic koreans and no one believes they actually care enough to seriously try

Forbes: China’s Sinovac Vaccine Under Scrutiny As Covid Soars In Highly Vaccinated Countries

quote:

Concerns over the effectiveness of China’s Sinovac vaccine continue to grow—Indonesia reported hundreds of outbreaks among medical professionals who took the vaccine and hard-hit Costa Rica declined to use it for fear it won’t work—the latest stumbling block for China’s global vaccination drive as heavily vaccinated countries deploying its two flagship vaccines face some of the world’s worst outbreaks.

More than 350 doctors and medical professionals have contracted Covid-19 in Indonesia despite the majority of healthcare workers having been immunized with Sinovac, officials said Thursday, just over a month after officials praised the shot for wiping out the disease among health workers.

Dozens of these were hospitalized, officials added, leading experts to question the effectiveness of the Chinese shot, particularly against the infectious Delta variant fueling the country’s outbreak.

On Wednesday, Costa Rica, in the midst of a severe Covid-19 outbreak, rejected a delivery of the Sinovac vaccine after health officials, examining clinical data, decided it was not effective enough.

These incidents add to growing concerns surrounding the efficacy of Chinese-made vaccines as fierce outbreaks tear through some of the most vaccinated nations, many of which relied heavily on China’s flagship Sinopharm and Sinovac vaccines for inoculation campaigns.

While both vaccines have been granted emergency authorization by the World Health Organization, Sinovac’s 51% efficacy only just exceeds the WHO’s 50% efficacy threshold for Covid-19 vaccines and a lack of public clinical data to back up manufacturers’ often inconsistent claims hampers public acceptance of the vaccine.

Sinovac did not respond to Forbes’ request for comment.

Contra: Uruguay, in the first release of real world data on Sinovac’s efficacy Tuesday, said the vaccine was over 90% effective at preventing ICU admissions and deaths, as well as 61% effective at preventing infections. Despite having vaccinated more people than almost any other country (it has given over 60% of its population at least one shot, higher than the U.S.), Uruguay is dealing with one of the highest Covid-19 death rates in the world. The Chinese pharmaceutical companies rarely address public concerns over efficacy and Chinese officials say questions over its vaccines are an example of anti-China bias and selective reporting. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying said a Wall Street Journal article questioning the role of the vaccines in the highly vaccinated Seychelles outbreak “exposes their unhealthy mind-set of denigrating China at every turn.”

Key Background: China has made its vaccines a key weapon in its foreign policy arsenal during the pandemic, often distributing them to poorer nations unable to access other vaccines and others willing to pay. For some countries, like Hungary, the price appears to place them among the most expensive in the world. China staunchly defends the quality of its vaccines, which it rolled out long before completing late stage clinical trials, though has broadly eschewed the practice of publishing clinical trial data in peer reviewed journals Western manufacturers (Sinopharm eventually did, where it was noted the trial could not “test the efficacy among those with chronic diseases, women, (and) older adults”).

What We Don’t Know: With no data available, the effectiveness of Sinovac against new Covid-19 variants is unknown. What is known of other vaccines against the Delta variant is a marked drop in protection with only one dose and a more limited drop once fully immunized. Even a small drop in efficacy would take Sinovac’s shot below the WHO threshold.

Crucial Quote: George Gao, the head of the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, acknowledged the poor efficacy of China’s vaccines at a conference in April, in what seemed to be an unintentional dissent from the party line. Gao said the country was exploring ways to “solve the problem that the efficacy of the existing vaccines is not high.” China swiftly rejected the way Gao’s comments had been perceived on the domestic and international stage, flushing comments from social media and publicly rebuking the statement. On state media, Gao later described the incident as a “misunderstanding.”

I think I just have "media criticism" brain that I can't turn off because I hate how this article is written:

* Indonesia used Sinovac for most of its vaccine supply (because nobody else is offering, bucko!)
* lots of Indonesian healthcare workers got infected and severely ill, even if they've been fully vaccinated
* this "raises concerns" over Sinovac

it sucks! The problem is that the Delta variant is virulent enough to cause breakthrough infections, but it's being framed as "Chinese vaccines might as well be sugar-water"

I mean thats how they're all written. The articles about the Seychelles from a few weeks ago were the same thing basically implying Chinese vaccines aren't worthwhile, but then when you looked at the numbers...

40%~ of vaccinated people in the Seychelles had AZ, so if there was an issue it wouldn't be all on China's shoulders.
80% of all people hospitalized were unvaccinated.

So basically... the vaccines were working pretty much exactly as they were advertised to? Slightly better considering both AZ and the Chinese vaccines don't even advertise 80% efficacy.

They also all seem to ignore the options for most of these places is Chinese vaccines or no vaccines. Brazil's put out numbers that areas with high vaccination rates have seen death rates plummet, though not similar decreases in positive case numbers, which is about what you'd want in an emergency situation.

As someone that's lived here for a while, I'm actually flabbergasted at the relative humility they have about the vaccines lol. Normally it'd be all "ra ra ours are the best" but the lowish efficacy rates (70-something for Sinopharm, 50% ish for Sinovac) are being published locally and the gov has not censored any of the docs saying "we need better vaccines, ours kinda suck compared to other ones".

A single dose mRNA one is in phase 3 trials now but idk how they'll do efficacy here with basically no cases.

e: im kind of assuming the relative quickness to shove off the current vaccines is that the "good" ones all use new mRNA tech so they can just argue they went for the cheaper and more easily produced version. Once an mRNA vaccine is up and running we will probably see a slightly different beat.
