Had that mission just about beat (had cleared out everyone to the exit) and then opened a hole in the back of the first floor and fell to my death rip

I really dig the mechanic where guns are added to your armory for future missions if you leave the level with them. I didn't even know about it but somehow knew it'd work that way intuitively.

edit: found the secret exit lol

The graphics in Dread Templar are pretty good, but the level design is merely okay, the sound design is disappointing, and the boss music is very obviously trying to be Legally Distinct BFG Division.

Yeah I played DT back when it was called Hell Hunt and filed it under my also-ran category of throwback FPS. Also: not fully sure why they changed the name.

That, and it's got a very retro fps vibe, plus the little realistic amenities like garbage cans and what looks to be vending machines. Blake Stone was the first FPS I played that almost seemed like, yeah, people WORK in the area you're in.

Plus, at least starting out in E1M1, there was a considerable amount of blue and grey.

Goddamn, I want some sort of Blake Stone follow-up.

Edit: Rewatching it, if the original BS had had trash cans, they would have looked EXACTLY like that, with the same text on them, too. Wow.

Finally getting around to playing Viscerafest and, maybe it's because I'm getting old but I just don't really have the patience for games that don't seem to respect the players time. I get that it's supposed to be challenging, but a lot of that challenge feels wonky as gently caress. There's very limited ammo to force you to use melee and it apes the Daikatana save system (for some reason?????). It does feel good to play, weapons are punchy and I like the aesthetic and humor (and that soundtrack :swoon: ) but yeah if I die at this level one more time at this fucken level....

I also played the demo for Industria for the Steam demo fest thing going on right now.

Very promising, a mix between Half-Life and the Metro series. The demo is super short but what's there is neat, it just needs some work with regards to the enemies. Right now it seems like they don't have any AI barks so it's easy to get a big chunk of your health shaved off before knowing that they are around.

I "beat" Cruelty Squad over the weekend and I could gush about it all day. I still have to unlock a few of the secret levels but I haven't played a game this good in a long while. I saw a tweet that took issue with a lot of people acting as if "it's so bad it's good" because it's just straight up great and will likely influence people for a long while and I couldn't have agreed more. It certainly makes me want to make a game.

I was watching a video of a guy doing all S-ranks for the levels and it was funny when he did Office because he took twice as long as I did when I replayed for grade. I hadn't seen any of the crazy good players doing the level figure out that shooting out the targets' office windows from the outside will cause them to fall off and die so you don't have to take the time to use the rocket or grenade launcher to kill them after you break their windows. Outside of going for high grades it's nuts how many different ways there are to tackle each mission.

That discussion got me to buy it right then even though I'm already going to be shambler dancing all week. I have never gotten really far in Deus Ex or anything but the gunplay almost reminds me of early Rainbow Six. Please tell me the double jump lives up to the description.

It makes a farting sound and even leaves a bunch of junk all over the ground. The comparison to original R6 gunplay is right on the money.

There's also an augmentation that replaces your kick and turns your back into a bunch of orifices so you can fart yourself forward super fast.

It's so weird that the only way to play an id-developed Quake on something resembling a modern console is to dig up the bonus disc for Quake 4 on the 360.

Does anyone know if Freedoom is still being developed? According to the Doomwiki the last release was in 2019, but the project has been around since 2001 so that might not mean all that much. The newest version does seem to have some better enemy sprites than in earlier days.

There’s just something about the gibs in quake 1 which was so great. There’s a detail to them despite their low res. The blood spraying everywhere. The weird physics that feel heavy and yet that they have way too much momentum at the same time.

Basically every official release in the digital distribution era has been the CD install wrapped in whatever DRM the store used. No soundtrack, which was Redbook audio streamed from the disc. "No soundtrack" hasn't seemed to stop them in the past or present.

E: a fun workaround would be "put whatever MP3s you want on an sdcard and we'll play them during gameplay and switch tracks between levels." We were all putting in whatever music CD we wanted back then, it would actually be sort of authentic

What the flip was Grandma doing at the dunes?

I have been trying to grind away the Quake 1 ranger skin in Quake Champions but the game just depresses me.

It’s so… not Quake? The guns, maps, character balance are all awesome, don’t get me wrong. It’s just how unoptimized the engine and net code feel that break my heart.

I'm a philistine whose last FPS was Goldeneye. Saw Doom 64 was available on Switch and went "ooh just 5 bucks!"

Turns out they've "modernized" the control scheme into some reverse Turok kind of deal. Yeah, I get it, it's probably more mouse+keyboard, but uh, can I at least get the option to turn and move forward/backward on the same stick? It's not like the game needs you to look up and down or anything.
