I remember there was a study done to find any plausible ways we could protect ourselves from a large asteroid if one was heading for earth today and the consensus was "gently caress all". Can't deflect it, can't blow it up. The best they could do was predict where it would impact and evacuate the area. And this is talking about asteroids that were much smaller than this comet.
