Don't forget the time during a political flare-up one of the top shows in China had it noted all their background names were Japanese pornstars.

Not as funny as when a show had to be hastily delayed so its credits could be re-edited because for a brief moment in them a map was visible where Taiwan was not part of china, which makes sense because the show was imported from Taiwan

See Bonilla-Silva's discussion of "honorary whiteness" (which was a real thing in South Africa) where he breaks down races and ethnicities that are more or less oppressed based on how white they are considered.

Or the sociological definition of racism that refers to it as a denial of resources or indirect defense of privilege such that all whites are racist and oppressed minorities cannot be.

I think plenty of SA posters are familiar with the latter which normal people don't like because the dictionary definition is more about prejudice and sociologists love to be self righteous and be like, "See young students, that is why all you white kids are RACISTS." "Now follow my teachings and see the light."

I've seen it plenty of times in different countries in Asia and any black person you meet over here has a million nightmare encounters. I think it is improving, more quickly in some places than others, but I feel there's an overall positive trend. I've seen a lot more black, and not just black but African, teachers in schools (local schools, international schools, and language academies) since I started which is awesome. It's going to vary greatly by school and region though.

Thailand is kind of all over the place but I don't think it's all that prejudiced, or at least not as prejudiced as other places. Still, if my kid attended my wife's school, there wouldn't be a black person on the entire campus. On the other hand, my school is fairly diverse at this point outside of the math department.

I can’t remember where in Zhejiang but I was in some relatively small village there, walking down the street with the only other Westerner in town and this group of workers were walking in a line and could not stop staring at us, to the point they collided into each other like some sort of 3 Stooges bit. Like in my mind, their heads made that sound of coconuts knocking together.

Welp good job YouTube.

EXCLUSIVE-YouTube takes down Xinjiang videos, forces rights group to seek alternative

June 25 (Reuters) - A human rights group that attracted millions of views on YouTube to testimonies from people who say their families have disappeared in China's Xinjiang region is moving its videos to little-known service Odysee after some were taken down by the Google-owned streaming giant, two sources told Reuters.

The group, credited by international organizations like Human Rights Watch for drawing attention to human rights violations in Xinjiang, has come under fire from Kazakh authorities since its founding in 2017.

Serikzhan Bilash, a Xinjiang-born Kazakh activist who co-founded the channel and has been arrested multiple times for his activism, said government advisors told him five years ago to stop using the word "genocide" to describe the situation in Xinjiang - an order he assumed came from pressure from China's government on Kazakhstan.

"They're just facts," Bilash said to Reuters in a phone interview, referring to the content of Atajurt's videos. "The people giving the testimonies are talking about their loved ones."

Atajurt Kazakh Human Rights' channel has published nearly 11,000 videos on YouTube totaling over 120 million views since 2017, thousands of which feature people speaking to camera about relatives they say have disappeared without a trace in China's Xinjiang region, where UN experts and rights groups estimate over a million people have been detained in recent years.

On June 15, the channel was blocked for violating YouTube's guidelines, according to a screenshot seen by Reuters, after twelve of its videos had been reported for breaching its 'cyberbullying and harassment' policy.

drat that's tough, hope the guy who called for a Jihad against china receives some of the 300 million dollar propaganda fund Biden is working on

https://www.scmp.com/comment/opinio...Di1XiSpKv8nUiuc

quote:

When the Chinese do it, it’s propaganda. When Washington does it, it’s “investing in our values”. The last phrase is taken from the Strategic Competition Act of 2021, newly passed by the United States Senate and will soon become law. It aims squarely at China and enjoys bipartisan support.

Buried deep within the 270-plus pages of the document is a provision to fund influence operations in Hong Kong with a budget of US$10 million for next year. I quote from Section 301: “Authorisation of Appropriations for Promotion of Democracy in Hong Kong.

“There is authorised to be appropriated US$10,000,000 for fiscal year 2022 for the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labour of the Department of State to promote democracy in Hong Kong.”

The large sum will more than make up for the US$2 million that was originally budgeted for anti-government protesters and rioters in 2019 but was cancelled because of an unrelated internal purge of key staff at the US Agency for Global Media (USAGM) by former president Donald Trump. We know this from congressional testimonies conducted by the House of Representatives’ Foreign Affairs Committee last September.

I am frankly amused that Hong Kong’s opposition is always claiming there is no evidence about US influence operations in the city. Why not just look up https://www.congress.gov
The act formalises America’s “geopolitical competition” against China in all fields, including the military, diplomacy, technology, trade and global news.

US$300 million for each of the financial years from 2022 to 2026 will be released to the “Countering Chinese Influence Fund to counter the malign influence of the Chinese Communist Party globally”.
The USAGM will have new funds “to support independent journalism” to counter “the Chinese Communist Party and other malign actors [for] promoting disinformation, propaganda, and manipulated media markets”.

Foreign journalists will be funded and trained “to help expose and counter false CCP narratives”, specifically about “the negative impact” of the Belt and Road Initiative.

The USAGM’s Open Technology Fund, which previously admitted to providing US$3 million to Hong Kong protesters between 2012 and 2016 to develop programmes to evade police surveillance, “shall continue and expand work to support tools and technology to circumvent censorship and surveillance by the CCP, both inside China as well as abroad”.
US lawmakers are too optimistic. Before the introduction of the national security law in Hong Kong, the opposition was happy to take American money. Now, there won’t be many takers.
