My other two favorites were Brian Stack specials: Artie Kendall and Hannigan. Hannigan in particular was so good because of how fast an joke packed it was in addition to being super weird.

He said most of the time writers get kind of the short end but that because Conan started as a writer he treated his writers better than anyone. He also famously paid all of his staff during the down time between his exit from NBC until he joined TBS.

What do you call the people on conan who participate in his skits and stuff. Like on the daily show they'd be the correspondents. I assume they're writers and comedians on their own but in the context of the show I'd like to know because I'm looking for a particular one in a particular role

Most are writers on the show. They do pull in various sketch comedians for bits, for example Amy Poehler as Andy's little sister back in the 90s, often they are contributing as well though. Then some are just hired actors for parts. Letterman was even worse though. He would literally pull in anyone for the show; interns, pages, security, wardrobe people, randoms on the street. From what I have been told both NBC and CBS lawyers would have fits over him.
