Defunctland (EDIT: or Yesterworld) has a great feature on the surprisingly vigorous rivalry between Chuck E Cheese and Showbiz Pizza. There is more betrayal than you’d expect, and of course a cameo by Dick the Birthday Boy.

If you’ve seen The Rock-A-Fire Explosion, the extremely depressing documentary about Showbiz Pizza robot inventor Aaron Fechter and his obsessive adult fans, the recurring confederate flags and reference to a confederate-themed robot cabaret gives some context to the custom order Fechter does where all the gorillas must be white. I guess it’s just some disturbing cultural history about the 80s that shouldn’t surprise me.

yesterworld is pretty good too. they do random disney park stuff too but its mostly interesting stuff like how disney uses visual trickery and poo poo in parks. i watched that documentry and the one adult fan is just depressing but i guess animatronics got a second life/fan group because of fnaf which i guess is nice. i am weirdly shocked they didnt bring back animatronics at resturants and poo poo again.

It's fine.
Don't worry about it.
I just noticed AesirAesthetics released his long-worked-on video on FromSoftware's famed spiritual successor to the King's Field series.

That's right, Shadow Tower:

I know I linked them here before, but he's already done videos on all the King's Field games, and if you have any interest in any of the action RPG games FromSoft has put out since Demon's Souls, they're fascinating to watch to see where they originated a lot of recurring themes, as well as where the newer games had deliberate callbacks to the older ones:

You know, after part 2, part 3 doesn't really have the same impact. Once you go into straight up porn and snuff films, it's downright horrible but it's also stuff I have no desire to see so it doesn't have the same visceral impact on the imagination.

Between having a lot of the initial backstory sealed in its game manual, the general opacity of the game's mechanics, and the nightmare of trying to do first person combat on a PS1 controller with controls that predate dual shock joysticks, I can see how it might all end up being a bit much.

yea that's always the problems with these 'icebergs', the makers always put like...the actual shocking poo poo as the middle chunk and then the last layer is just 'and, uh, yea snuff films exist' which is like, yea I mean I think those are horrible but that's way less 'disturbing' than 'oh this mentally ill person was working through very real trauma in the most crude and shocking form possible with this movie and just kinda put it out there for everyone to see'

True. There's a difference between watching straight up snuff (which I have no desire to do) and people who have definitely watched snuff and decided to use various incidents as scenarios for their films or media properties. They're both awful but in different ways, and I take issue with using real life tragedies for exploitation movies. It's just gross on a level of manipulation that hits me harder than actual death on camera.

I will never not be grossed out when lost media weirdos include suicides and other actual, real people dying on camera as part of their lists, as if they already have an empty shelf labeled and ready to go just in case one day they somehow get ahold of it. It's gross but it'd be pretty weird to put together a lost media list and not include the person who killed themselves on their own show or a guy and his girlfriend getting eaten by a bear.

I'm just glad I was in high school ages ago and only saw the bad stuff in the internet's early days. I fell down a youtube rabbit hole and there's one guy who goes over cartel stuff and there's no amount of bleach that would've been able to clean that out of my brain based on the descriptions.

These videos were a slog. The rambling descriptions of these movies started to blend together very quickly. No need for them to be 30+ minutes each.

Yeah, a lot of the ones in this video just kinda made me go "...wait, is that it?" It didn't help that a lot of them definitely blurred together, even to May herself it seems, when the descriptions could basically just be "it's the same as the last one but with a different name" for like half of them. The actual interesting stuff worth a mention here was after the final tier when she briefly went over some things that didn't even make the list for whatever reason.

i had to take a long break in the middle of part 3 because the density of movies in the first half that's people eating literal poo poo just took the wind out of me. i love may's videos but if she never does a "disturbing movies" deep dive again, i'm not going to complain

and yeah the last leg was just compilation videos for depravity fetishists that nobody should actually watch ever

He goes over gore videos in detail as kind of a surrogate for actually watching them. He does go over some of the old ones that I'd seen way back when like Chechlear but it's mostly stuff I'll never watch from more recent years. He's doing well on patreon and considering what seemed to be his situation before I say more power to him but I don't think I could watch the stuff he describes even for what he's pulling down now. With the shutdown of sites like liveleak it's probably more of a pain for people who even want to watch this stuff to do so. I know I was looking up plane accident scenes/photos awhile ago and the site Documenting Reality had some interesting stuff but you only get a few views before having to donate bitcoin and I think they have all the real bad stuff as well so it's out of reach to most people.

I did learn from one of his videos that TikTok is the new way to jump scare people with what look like kpop fancams that cut to actual murders or suicides. Certainly not how screamers worked back in my day.

And yeah that was Treadwell.

Yeah I should clarify that it's one thing to say "hey this guy's death was recorded" as a historical note or whatever, but some lost media types cross the line into "their family refuses to release the footage for some reason :reject:" as if his death is a fuckin' lost Doctor Who episode.

Edit: I guess to put it more succinctly, there's a difference between "lost" and "things I'm not allowed to see". And even in the case of awful poo poo that was rightfully erased/left unrecorded, I don't think it's worth kicking up a fuss about it like it's culturally significant.

It feels absolutely wrong to include snuff film/video clip collabs on a list of disturbing movies. Like there's a lot of gross shock movies that have been confused for snuff (Cannibal Holocaust and one of the Guinea Pig films) but legit snuff is not worth watching period. But it is a stupid iceberg meme that someone made and probably intended for the bottom list to be absolutely horrible stuff. Although a few horror subreddits are pissed at the meme because people come in asking for essentially Ogrish clip collabs.

its not in the spirit of movie watching for enjoyment, but i understand the logical progression.

an interesting unsettling movie imo is the documentary "sick" about bob flanagan the bdsm performance artist. come to watch a man hammer a nail into his dick without a care and stay for the truly awful but unflincing part where he dies from his cystic fibrosis (he required his death be a part of the movie if they wanted his collaboration).

All jokes aside, I wish the Youtubers making these iceberg explanation videos went into a little bit more depth or would provide more personal commentary. A lot of these videos boil down to the Youtuber rattling off the information they could find about the subject without adding much of their own work to it. Even Nyx's video is guilty of this to some extent.

It's not much of Iceberg Explained video if nothing gets Explained :sigh:
