Literally my only complaint with Mario Golf is that I want to be able to choose my clubs. Come on, Adventure Mode, you can't tease me with knowledge that an approach wedge and a lob wedge are in the game and then not let me use them in other modes.

Also thank god I'm to WW and out of those drat XC and Speed modes. Speed is okay, but as a multiplayer option probably with friends. XC is only okay as a training mode, like "look what we can do with terrain/elevation"

I did have one "fun" time in Speed Golf where I thought I was taking a shortcut only to discover that I had to walk all the way around a lava gulf so the marginally shorter setup shot was more than cancelled out by how long it took me to make it to my ball.

Yeah, I got turned around in the desert and it soured me on the whole course. Then again I never understood the appeal of desert levels in Mario games. Odyssey's sand kingdom is maybe my one exception.

SMB 2 and 3's desert levels are... fine, but holy gently caress, to hell with the pyramid level in 64. Having beaten that entire game for the first time a few years ago, after literally a decade and a half of playing a few levels until I got frustrated, it turns out that I really don't like it.

My biggest complaint about golf is that it wasn't drawn out and pointless enough. Instead of just warping to the ball I'm glad I can run around in bland environments with a stamina meter. Even better in single player when there is nobody to race against.

Holy poo poo, ... I decide I'm going to play Mario Golf with motion controls. Ok, cool. I'll use my left joycon because I still need to fix the horrendous drift on the right one. And it literally says, in the game, "you can use either one". So I set up the controller. I go through the main menu, motion controls, it asks me to once again set up my controller. Ok, will do. Then it tells me how to hold it when playing. No problem. And then again, cuts back to the "press L and R on the controller you want to use". I check and the light is still on, on the joycon. It didn't flake out or die, the left one is fine, so wtf? I register it again, the "how to hold it" screens come up, and I note that it literally gives me the option to either hit + or - buttons to continue, so again, I know that the game accepts either/or. I end up doing this whole back and forth about 2 more times before, on a whim, trying my right joycon, the one that sucks, and sure enough, it gets right into the next menu option, beyond that loop I was stuck in. I get to where I can play and of course, drift pushes my club selection right down to putter, so I can't even pick anything else. I try again with the left controller but it won't stay registered for whatever reason, despite the fact that it's now the joycon that the Switch sees, not the right one anymore. So then I say gently caress it, gently caress motion controls (for now, I do want to try them), I'll just use my 8bitdo Pro + and play button controls. Well, of course I can't turn that on because the game is expecting one joycon, so it immediacy keeps shutting my Pro + controller off, the left joycon I'm using doesn't have the home button, and aaaaaauuuuuugggggggghhhhhhhh. In short, gently caress joycons and joycon drift.

Flubby posted:There's one thing I want get straight about Mario Golf. Toad is a mushroom. That means the real Toad is at the bottom-most part of his body. The mycellium. You don't ever see Toad, not really, because he wears shoes. He's basically a reproductive organ from the ankles up. His "hat" being part of his body and removable are both true. You could pull off a piece of his head and eat it and it wouldn't really hurt him. Some people seemed confused about that. I played as Wario earlier today to get some character points and I think he putts by pelvic thrusting directly into his putter. Not sure but that's what it looked like to me. LionArcher posted:I was not going to buy golf because of scores and then I came into thread. You know, a 6/10 is fair. So is an 8/10. This game seriously lacks polish, and is currently pretty light on content. However, it is unquestionably an all-new Mario Golf game on Switch. It's also a lot of fun in its core mechanics. At least that part feels somewhat complete. It will certainly be getting more courses via free DLC, and who knows, maybe they'll get it looking a little better. Performance is pretty perfect as is. If you can overlook the occasional bug, the lame muzak, the (current) lack of courses, the "first pass looks good enough let's get this game out the door" graphical presentation, the terribly basic-looking course hub areas, and getting knocked into an unescapable pit by another player during Speed Golf, thus getting hosed in Speed Golf, it is a fun Mario Golf game. The lack of polish is really the only big offender. If you're curious, check out the cutscene at this timestamp. I feel like it says a lot about the game. enojy fucked around with this message at 04:00 on Jun 28, 2021 |
