antarctic ice is like 45 million years old. the fossil record from then on is pretty clear idk. Obviously I am in no way ruling out super smart birds or small mammals that just flew into outer-space using advanced thought. In fact that is my leading explanation.

there’s nothing impossible about earth-life being the first life in the universe, it’s just too incredibly depressing to think about and also doesn’t really motivate us to figure out if that’s the case so it’s best ignored. but not impossible

going off of the drone theory that says these are self replicating drones - what if these drones seeded the earth/enlightened our ape ancestors, which is how they replicate - the life they create/promote is coded to build the drones aka we are the aliens

i forgot super smart arthropods who created sentient colony intelligence and then molted into tool-specific carapaces and body segments to construct living spaceships. if they left the oceans we would likely not have a clear fossil record of them

Shear Modulus posted:wouldnt there be like a bunch of oil well casing pipes and stuff in the ground Nah none of that stuff survives on that kind of time scale in a recognizable form. If you think about how fossils get made or preserved almost nothing survives. You might find indirect signs of something if you know what to look for (when written history and geological evidence converge, like the signs of Roman civilization in ice cores) but otherwise the huge majority of things that happen leaves no trace. Even we will hardly leave any signs for those who come afterwards to find unless we manage to stick around for a very, very long time. https://www.theatlantic.com/science/archive/2019/08/arrogance-anthropocene/595795/ I don’t think there’s evidence for intelligence, technology, and civilization having arisen (and fallen) hundreds of thousands or millions of years ago, but it would be almost impossible to tell if it only lasted as long as we have or a little longer. To me it seems a more parsimonious explanation than extraterrestrial aliens.

https://science.howstuffworks.com/space/aliens-ufos/ufo-burn.htm quote:During the great sighting outbreak of early November 1957, a number of close encounters had a disturbing consequence: burns and related injuries to witnesses. One of the most dramatic occurrences took place at an army base at Itaipu along Brazil's Atlantic coast. At 2 A.M. on November 4 two guards saw a luminous orange disc coming in over the ocean at a low altitude and an alarming rate of speed. As it passed above the soldiers, the disc came to an instant stop.
