I think all of the latter-era ones also include a riff about "super violent porn cartoons" somewhere.

That one I would give them a pass on, even though it is a reductive and incorrect description. In the late 90's anime wasn't omnipresent in the west like it is now. All the average person who didn't follow that kind of thing really knew about anime was what was played on SciFi during their anime marathons and a lot of those were pretty graphically violent, yeah, and they were known to have tits in them even though they couldn't get past American censors. Maybe your larger Blockbusters had anime sections if you wanted to rent a tape and see the tits for yourself. But yeah, it's easy to forget now, but that was pretty much how anime was introduced as a concept to a lot of North Americans.

It would be super weird if they made that riff now, of course. (Though if super violent porn cartoons are your jam, Japan does have you covered.)

It's less that super violent porn cartoons is some gross exaggeration and more that taking it as a quintessentially Japanese thing, and that more or less being the entire joke, is a bit iffy. Not the worst riff by any stretch, that much I agree with.

Being From Another Planet is on Svengoolie tonight and I just learned that the actual title is Time Walker and the mst3k version’s title is a huge spoiler. You’re not supposed to know the mummy is an alien until the end. It’s like terminator 2’s trailer spoiling that Arnold is a good guy.

If I remember the mid 90s correctly, the only japanimations that were float around repertory houses were Akira (yay!) and Legend of the Overfiend (yikes!). At least in the north east.

All the MST3K references were i think covered by these two movies.

I was a regular rep house guy and those were the only two that I remember coming through.

I remember Vampire Hunter D being all over the Sci-Fi Channel years before they aired Akira. I think I was pissed when they preempted Quantum Leap reruns for Project A-Ko.

Considering who they were and where they lived, that...kind of was what anime was. Anime that came over in the 90s to relatively normal people who didn't go looking for it was either kid shows on TV that you didn't even think of as anime, or violent porn cartoons. Half of the 1980s OVAs that made their way to the states were built on that staple.

That's a reason I don't have any issue with that joke. It's like joking about America being the burger gun country. We were that. I'd say we *are* that, but the rest of the world got infected by burgers but we're still the most gun! There's even an OVA explicitly about that in fact.

If someone tried to make that joke these days, yeah, that'd get poo poo on really hard. Even in the early 2000s. But I can tell you from vivid memories going to a video rental place, you would have to try not to find something with gratuitous violence, nudity or both and that's because all that was coming over in that capacity were the cheaper OVA stuff from the mid to late 80s and very early 90s. We didn't see the swing around until the late 90s.

So I don't really consider that on the same level as 'we thought this was acceptable at the time but we were wrong'. You start pumping Mad Dogs and Apocalypse Zeros out into the world, you're going to get stared at

I actually saw both of those when I was in the UK, would've been mid or late '92. A British friend of mine who was a fellow science fiction buff had various Japanese anime movies and TV shows and every so often me and one or two of my other British friends would go over to his place and get some beers and whatever takeaway food (pizza or Chinese, mainly) and watch stuff. One night he put Akira on and it really blew my mind. Another night he put on Legend of the Overfiend and...erm...yeah. That was something all right. :stare:

Same experience, and it sounds like anime spread to the US in the same way it did to the UK.

There was a video label called 'Manga' that had been releasing children's stuff for a few years, but they went full-blast when they released Akira on VHS. Two editions, subbed or dubbed, and they courted the press like gently caress which meant that the cover had glowing review quotes from the Times and such. It really was a breakthrough moment that immediately went mainstream, hitting 'film of the year' charts that animated films rarely brushed against, and seemed like it was an insight into a slice of another culture that had been completely unknown until then.

Then Legend of the Overfiend came out and it became apparent that Akira was justifiably elevated, and a lot of the stuff that followed was pretty much grotty old bollocks for weirdos.

I do recall we laughed a lot at the terrible dubbing in the version of LotO that he had, but otherwise it was definitely one of those "man I sure hope nobody I know walks in here :sweatdrop:" kinda movies.

Yeah, Manga Video was a big presence stateside, too. I think Streamline (Carl Macek's company) released Akira in the US, but Manga did put out Ghost in the Shell. But they also released Angel Cop and Mad Bull 34, and had "Manga Man" as their mascot.

Which I can't even find right now because the image search mostly gives me modern anime!

As long as we're talking about anime and new takes on old tokusatsu, I just want to note that Godzilla: Singular Point just hit Netflix the other day. It's pretty good, features some high-concept superscience written by an actual physicist-turned-SF-novelist, and not only features the return of our old friend Jet Jaguar:

but also has this nod to another MST3k episode in the end credits (which are wall-to-wall references to past Godzilla movies):

Apparently the movie was based on a Japanese TV series and will getting a modern reboot at some point. Otherwise not really sure about the details (Chikao Ohtsuka apparently played Krankor in the original version though)

Though I will say that the whole "Your weapons are useless against me" line was probably something more akin to "I'm invincible/It's useless" in the Japanese version (meaning it wasn't so much that he was literally immune to their weapons but rather he was just fast enough to easily dodge them)

I actually can't make it through even with Mike, Bill and Kevin. It's not even funny bad, it's just like one of those people on Facebook who tries to do NaNoWriMo because 'I totally have a good idea for a novel' and then realises they actually just had one particular scene in mind and so they stretch a 10 page short story out over 200 pages.
