[discussing what "radicalized" them against china]

For me it was when we rolled out the literal red carpet (alternating Canadian and Chinese flags down Sussex Dr.) courting a free trade deal at the beginning of the Trudeau government, and it all fell apart because China wanted an extradition treaty too.

I'd wanted to go to Hong Kong for a long time but was too busy with school and competition when I had the chance. Now that basically can't happen.

Jeff at least reversed the ban + 30 for the guy who dared to even look like he was pro-intervention for Libya. I didn't know there were Qaddafi tankies out there to begin with let alone in 2021.

quote:

Hakimashou got a ban + 30 for saying the Chinese government is culpable for the Covid-19 pandemic, and that's a pretty hosed up ban+probe IMO for what is an increasingly mainstream position

There you go. The actual political subforums seem to be losing the ability to understand implication. Taking an example where time has removed all controversy, saying "The Soviet Union is responsible for the Chernobyl disaster" doesn't mean that the government explicitly ordered the reactor be induced to melt down, or that radioactive fallout in Europe is the fault of all Russian/Ukrianian people or Soviet citizens. It does mean that institutional culture in a society where the truth meant less than staying on your immediate boss' good side, and having an explicitly dangerous dual-use reactor design, created the necessary circumstances for the disaster and subsequent coverup. The PRC could avoid a repeat of this by simply not dicking the WHO investigators around, but instead there's been an obvious campaign of face-saving and rear end-covering to the point that it doesn't matter if the virus originated in a lab, a wildlife market or Frozen Food Definitely From Somewhere That Is Not China.

So now the GBS China thread is mostly political because, even if not for the pandemic travel restrictions, it's frankly unsafe for most Westerners to visit there. I've also personally learned a lot from almost every regular poster here

— Former vice president Joe Biden, in remarks in Columbia, S.C., on Feb. 11

“After he [Mandela] got free and became president, he came to Washington and came to my office. He threw his arms around me and said, ‘I want to say thank you.’ I said, ‘What are you thanking me for, Mr. President?’ He said: ‘You tried to see me. You got arrested trying to see me.’”

Mr Biden - at the time a senator for Delaware - said he had been visiting the country with a delegation of American officials, and had planned to visit Mandela in prison.

But during the trip, Mr Biden said he had "had the great honour of being arrested with our UN ambassador on the streets of Soweto" while trying to reach the civil rights leader on Robben Island. The town of Soweto is more than 760 miles (1,223km) from Robben Island.

At a black history awards brunch in Las Vegas last week, he also said Mandela had thanked him for his efforts.

"He threw his arms around me and said, 'I want to say thank you,'" Mr Biden told onlookers. "I said, 'What are you thanking me for, Mr President?' He said: 'You tried to see me. You got arrested trying to see me.'"

In 1987, Flake testified before the Utah State Senate in support of a resolution expressing support for the government of South Africa while racial segregation laws were enforced — largely to support U.S. mining interests in the region. In testimony flagged by a Democratic source, Flake opposed sanctions on the regime, arguing they only worsened the living conditions for black South Africans.
