I begin my title defense this tournament. Trying to shake things up and pick guys that could surprise from the lower ranks. However, with great rewards comes risk.

Check the rankings a few pages back. tochinoshin is in the M11+ bracket, Endo is m1-m5 for example

Also picking tochinoshin is a mistake in general.

you did the right format but i think you picked your guys based off of the rankings for the last basho instead of the current one. i struck out all your picks who are currently at different ranking tiers and put their current rank in parentheses. kenning has the current banzuke in the op and i'll add it again here so you can correct it.

Ah! Thank you all for the corrections and apologies for showing my rear end on the internet just immediately. When my partner and I were putting our lists together we were both so sure that we were using the sumoDB correctly (we were not)

Here's a revised list that hopefully now fits! Tochinoshin is definitely a silly pick but I wanted him in there because he's one of my favourites and I like cheering him on despite the fact that he should really just go home and nurse his horribly broken knees.

Sumodb queries are pretty fun. He could make it back as soon as September, but he has to be good and get some luck. He’d need 11 to be considered a lock, 9 &10 have a chance but would require enough people ahead of him to screw up and open a spot.

Since 2010, for J5e, immediate promotions have been:

8-7: 1/20
9-6: 3/9
10-5: 5/9
11-4: 5/5
12+: 0/0

I looked up the single promotion from 8-7 and it was Akiseyama in Hatsu 2016! The upper-Juryo/lower-Makuuchi results in that basho looked wild. Only 4 of the top 10 dudes in Juryo posted winning scores and only 4 people in M11+ posted winning scores, with 4 people getting 4-11 or worse.

45 fantasy draft lists so far! I still need to submit my picks, but it looks like we're in for another huge turnout. Depending on the final count, this may be the tournament when I implement Fantasy Juryo.

So when does Enho make it back to the big(ger) leagues?

If his arm has healed up and he stays healthy, he probably makes it back up to makuuchi in two bashos, maybe three. After that, my guess is that he drops back down to juryo fairly quickly and becomes one of those guys who just bounces between high juryo and low makuuchi up until he retires.

It's a size issue, imo. He's very skillful, but he's also very small and that kills him in makuuchi because everybody there is skilled enough to learn how to handle his tricks, and without that bag of tricks he's fighting with a disadvantage of roughly eight inches in height and a hundred plus pounds.

I forget who he was fighting but I think it was in the last basho I saw someone just utterly counter enho by being twice as heavy as him and repeatedly blasting him in the face with full on headbutts as soon as he tried to drop down for the leg, driving him out of the ring.
You could see from enhos face he was really not enjoying that one

It was very brutal, a lot of enhos fights had an element of watching a car accident last time round

Yeah, from watching some of his fights it seems the key to beating Enho is just playing it safe. Be conservative at the tachiai because he's dodgy and his small size means that he's not going to overpower you even if you half-rear end it to avoid a henka. Play it safe at the rope because he's gonna try and go sideways on you. Take it slow and steady and force him into a pure strength contest, because he's going to lose one of those.

I will never forget the bout where Enho and (I think) Yutakayama just both stood up at the tachiai. Konosuke called a matta, so then they just...did it again. Stood up, didn't charge, just looked at each other like two cats about to fight in an alley. Konosuke just started shouting "Hakkeyoi!" and gesturing at them to get on with it. I think that could reasonably be called the moment when Enho was solved in makuuchi.

Are any of you sumo purists who don't feel like you're really watching sumo without several minutes of standing up, walking away, foot stomping, salt throwing, and chicken scratching? I like to see it for the big matches, but mostly I'm happy to see Kintamayama's super-condensed digest version. (I don't feel like cutting the slow parts of matches is necessary, though.)

I feel like that stuff being available is very important, but I sure as hell am not always in the mood for it, so how I actually watch varies. Hard agree on the editing thing as well, seems pointless...at least mark on the screen how much time you cut out . I'll forgive him though because then he goes and posts something like that translated Enho interview (check a page or two back if you missed it) that was amazing.
