There's a bunch of different SCP games on steam now too, including quite a few free ones.

There’s YouTube explainer videos now and everything. Probably the better part of a decade now? They're on the 5000 series articles now I think. There's some very good stuff in it but also it struggles with the 3edgy5me roots a lot, and because it's collaborative and there is no single canon, the really good stuff with good ideas exists right next to the "the author is a serial killer" and just generally bad or unremarkable stuff. Some of it also is just so far entrenched in its own canon that it's virtually incomprehensible.

I don't know if it's directly related but back in the nineties there was an infamous website, accessible only by its IP address (which IIRC started 6.66 or 66.6) that had a bunch of text files similar to SCP. They had a rule in place that closed the connection if you had a referrer header (i.e. if you followed a link to get there) and a couple of other shenanigans as time went on like requiring weird authentication types or a specific user-agent header to let you in. I think it was gone by the late 90s, but I remember being completely freaked out by it the first time it ran around IRC.

WhatEvil posted:Crowd at Wembley booing the German national anthem. Interesting discussion I was having the other day about UK nationalism: - In Ireland and Scotland and Wales lots of people detest the Union Jack (butcher's apron etc) because it's associated with Britain but probably wouldn't have quite the same response to a St George Cross. The union jack is only really flown by staunch unionists who are usually relatively right-wing if not full-on Britnats. - In England it's inverted. The Union Jack is everywhere is mostly just seen as an uncontroversial national symbol like the Saltire etc, and you get it on cushions and t-shirts and plastered all over the place but very few people are vocally opposed to it (outside of a minority of lefties who understand the history). It certainly doesn't have the same political nationalist connotations as it does in the rest of the UK in mainstream discourse. The St George Cross, on the other hand, does - that's what your scary fashy types are going to be flying. I think a good way of putting this is I would avoid a pub covered in Union Jacks here in Scotland like the plague (except maybe in Edinburgh, because you know) and I'd be fine going to one covered in Saltires, but cross the border and the rules go backwards - I'd avoid a pub covered in St George Crosses in England just the same, but probably be OK with a place flying a few union jacks.

If you like horror movies, Nyx Fears is a great youtuber on that whole subject. Funny as hell too. As for Spaced, the universal algorithm/jaffa cakes gag is maybe the single greatest sitcom joke of all time.

forkboy84 posted:The only anthem I remember being booed by any number at Hampden is God Save The Queen. And maybe the Lichtenstein anthem that has the same tune as GSTQ Maybe that's the reason? After unification, the Kaiserreich duplicated the melody of GSTQ for their own new anthem. To the surprise of British soldiers in the trenches, who at first thought the Germans were loving with them every time the German anthem started playing over there My theory is, the sheer indignation the British soldiers suffered causes their descendants to boo the German anthem, whenever they hear it, purely on instinct.

SCP has, and has had, a bunch of stuff that is novel when you see it for the first time. It started out with the moving statue one on 4chan and I think to some extent that's the best stuff, the document is short and hints at being part of a much bigger thing (it's number 173, which implies more) and there's a lot of loose threads, and it existed out of context and not on the wiki, so there's a lot unsaid for you to fill in yourself. As it took off initially it was a lot of super grimdark "hell yeah we kill fifty zillion prisoners a day to keep this murder torture god in prison" type poo poo and also a bunch of self insert super cool dudes who work there (and a bunch of super cool dudes who are contained). And there was still a bunch of the novel stuff coming out then I think which benefitted from not being super well explained. Over time though the site itself has shifted a lot in tone, and as it's gotten wider appeal a lot of people have started to use the setting to write actually cool political themed stuff. There's a whole set of entries that are about an online anomalous anarchist collective who see the foundation as basically being cops, and it does interesting things with the idea of how while anomalies are inherently dangerous they are also necessarily a tool for insurrectionary forces because they are one of the few sources of power that are handed out basically randomly by chance. And what the foundation really represents isn't humanity's wellbeing but simply a form of institutional control, a form of control that might indeed stop people from being eaten by horrible supernatural monsters but which is entirely happy with mundane horrors. There's also more writing that looks at the foundation as an institution and asks whether it would not also have internal problems, while it's generally portrayed as competent and even the best option in many cases, it's absolutely got problems and a lot of good writing I think has a distinctly anti-authoritarian bent to it, questioning whether the spooky council of long serving foundation people, half of whom are anomalous themselves, is actually well suited to deciding what is and isn't normal. I quite like kenowhere as an example. The format is a bit hard to parse if you aren't already kind of familiar with the characters and weird formats generally, but the actual story is both sweet and sad.

Guavanaut posted:I like the 'Foundation as State' take on normalcy. Presumably the various British and European chapters classify the moving houses that sometimes appear near the village green as an existential threat. I think you would really enjoy kenowhere, i'm rereading it now and it occurs to me that it is probably something that most people outside this thread wouldn't actually get, such a good piece of writing for showing what different ideas of "normal" are. And how systems of control and environments that we exist in shape what we think of as normal.

The crowd is definitely very nationalist, in a way it hasn't been for the last couple matches. Probably since it's past the qualifiers, before a single match wouldn't matter that much. They're openly booing the Germans every time they touch the ball.

They want you to believe that touching the ball is just about playing football, but it's actually part of a divisive Marxist agenda.

Your point about new actors not having much clue might be right but it is absolutely not the case for someone like Ayoade. I'd be extremely surprised if his agent wasn't sent the script, series bible, character outlines etc before he committed. (I work in film and to a lesser degree TV, so I know a bit about this). It is also very unlikely that someone signed on without knowing what the role was for any actor playing any kind of major or significant supporting role in a TV show, regardless of their experience. Private Speech posted:The crowd is definitely very nationalist, in a way it hasn't been for the last couple matches. The fact that it's Germany doesn't help. It's pathetic how this country has to hearken back to 1966 or WWII to find some moment of which it feels it can be proud. 1966 as 55 loving years ago. Move on.

Private Speech posted:The crowd is definitely very nationalist, in a way it hasn't been for the last couple matches. Last tournament there were complaints from pretty much everyone about the insane repetitive chanting of the England crowd, it got picked up on that these were not normal football chants, they were chants from people who had never been to a game in their lives. The theory is that the normal working classes and younger people have been priced out and now it’s pure triple locked gammon there to be with their people.
