She's good and I like her, it's just completely bonkers that she is the current County Judge for Harris County.

Cinco is literally on the cusp of Harris county (and in fact, partially in it). And it doesn't matter if you don't live smack in the middle of the county as long as you're relatively familiar with some of it at least. Getting to know the rest of it is part of the job.

I mean, US Representatives don't even have to live in their districts.

I know what/where Cinco Ranch is.

It was just surprising that a 1L in law school who hadn't lived in the region since she was in high school (and lived in a suburb that is in an adjacent county for that part of it) ran for and won the seat to be Chief Executive of a county that's larger than 26 states. She's been good at the job, I was just pointing out the absurdity of the whole thing.

Like I'd be just as surprised if Liz Bruening became the Mayor of Dallas.

Uh... Kupo?

I went to law school with a really genuinely great and smart guy who ran for and a won a seat on the local city council 2L year. He had lived nearby his whole life and was really ingrained in the baseball scene, including coaching a little league team, said "gently caress it why not" and won.

I think we're supposed to pretend Texas judges are the same as any other city official for some reason? They're not. Maybe a justice of the peace, but bad judges are huge headaches, and if she was a 1L their clerks probably know more about procedure and caselaw than them.

That being said, you can probably get away with some guidance from a professor/helpful staff/predecessor.

e: I realize now that I've only ever dealt with federal judges and I have no idea what state judging would be like so this post is inherently flawed probably

I'm not an expert on the subject or anything, and I'm sure one will chime in momentarily, but the county judge title is misleading. They aren't judges in the regular sense of that word. It's an executive position. They don't sit in court or hear trials or anything like that.

Edit: For example, the county judges in the Dallas and Houston areas have mostly been in the news within the past year for setting Covid policy and fighting with the state executives about what should be done with regards to mask use, restaurant occupancy, etc.

Yeah, the county judge is the county executive and nothing more. It's an antiquated term like many in Texas.

The most disturbing part of this article is the chart about halfway down which shows that, at its peak in 2019, barely half of students grades 3-8 met grade level in reading and math, and now it's down to 35% in math and 42% in reading (Christ). Lots of things to unpack about this: internet access, home environment, food security (or lack thereof), language proficiency, parental involvement, etc. The bottom line is that the effects of this will be felt for years to come, if not at least a decade.

The genuine results are probably even worse than reported. 9% of the total student body in the state didn’t take the exams this year as compared to last, and that group of students were primarily at-risk students that would have disproportionately failed the exams. Many of those students have vanished from the schools entirely, and it may be difficult to bring them back to campuses. If we spend another semester tracking them all down and pulling them back to school, they’ll effectively has lost two straight years of instruction.

Yeah a Lina Hidalgo is basically the mayor of Harris County, no idea why she's called a judge but she doesn't do anything with hearing cases.

Also somewhat confusingly, she heads the commissioners court, which is also not a thing that hears cases - there are four county commissioners (no idea if this number is standard for all Texas counties or just for Harris), and the five of them vote on stuff for the government to do or not do. Hidalgo has executive power over county government organs but is just a regular voting member of the court, she can't veto anything and if she loses a vote, she is bound to follow the outcome.

I still haven't seen any explanation for what all these foreign national guardsmen are doing once they get here.

It's like when Iceland sent like three guys to Iraq, just to say that they did.

I remember an interview with an army officer from when Trump deployed them to the border and she was like "yeah we're just kinda sitting in tents down here. I dunno why we're here. There's no job to do."

zoux

Nothing. There's nothing to do, there's no border crisis, it's a made up problem that Abbott is using to seem Trumpy and Noem is trying to get her beak wet since the border nearest to her has a bunch of polite, nonthreatening white people on the other side.
