There’s a guy in our Sunday night session who plays ball hockey and he mostly just over-stick handles the puck when he has it. He absolutely skates through people because of his hands but it’s always about 10 moves more than needed.

Holy gently caress had an absolutely miserable game tonight. Played a team that was easily a division above us and got smoked 10-1. Their two defensemen were responsible for 7/10 goals, 3-4 assists and were leading most of their offensive rushes.

Not the end of the world. We've played a lot of really skilled teams and have been blown out before. But they were chippy as gently caress and threw a fit anytime we gave it back.

One of our defensemen got tangled with this guy. He elbows her, she gives him a weak slash in the shin pads. He cross checks her in the face. She gets a penalty. Two shifts later he slashes someone else but they slash him back in the shin pads. He dives to the ground and rolls around. You would have thought he broke his ankle. We knew it was a penalty for sure. Our guy gets ejected for a major. Their guy needs help back to the bench with no weight on his leg.

Two shifts later this guy jumps back on the ice like nothing's wrong and the ref calls a 10 minute unsportsmanlike for making a huge scene and then getting right back out there. He's furious. He was already in the box earlier for a cross check and the good ref had his eye in him all game.

After the game I ask him if he's alright and he tells me "yeah I'm fine, this happened to me last week".

I've only ever seen it play out once where someone injured a player on a penalty, the offender gets ejected for a major because of the injury, but the injured player can't return or they can get a 10 minute penalty if they come back (I think the spirit of the penalty is to prevent diving and getting someone ejected by faking an injury).

I chose to serve the game misconduct penalty. The way things were going someone was going to get hurt and we were already blown out. I drew boobs in the moisture on the glass and chatted with the score keeper.

gently caress those games.

Playing in a tournament this weekend. Last time I played was March in another tournament and then again March of last year. We actually synced up pretty good for most of us not playing for the last year and a bit. Got a nice pass from my teammate and shot it off the goalies ribs and in. Felt good coming off the stick and went right where I wanted it. Now only 3 more games in the next two days. I'm going to die.

Anybody use HockeyTracker with an apple watch? I've played two games with it now, it's pretty interesting. My max heart rate in game 1 was 191, and in game 2 it was 183. Average went from 155 to 144. Gonna be interesting to see how this continues to change as it get back into shape. Right now it's telling me my hockey shape is "poor" (calculated by heart rate vs. speed) and I gotta say, it's not wrong.

Yep, I paid for a couple years now. I used to enter my stats and stuff, only to realize the graphs and stuff it shows are not really useful. I pretty much only use it for distance skated and calories burned anymore. I'm about 0.8 miles when we have 3 F lines and 1.1 when we have 2 F lines. Other than that, I don't really use any of the 'extra' stuff, so I probably won't re-up my subscription when it lapses. I found the shift timers to be way off since your HR is way high for a bit when you get back to the bench. And the shift alarms (like when you set it for 60s shifts or whatever) just burn my battery and I never noticed them anyway cause I was playing hockey.

It's a really cool app and the dude has done a ton of dev work on it over the years to improve it, but I don't use it for much beyond the free tier. I never go back and review my stats, or game results.

Think I hosed my leg up a bit last night. I caught an edge while skating and I think I put a ton of pressure on my leg as a result. I didn't feel much pain at the time or after the game but woke up this morning and I have pain behind my knee whenever I try to flex the leg.

I hope I didn't tear anything. The pain isn't the worst I've ever felt so I'm thinking I just sprained something or hyper extended a muscle or whatever. I guess I'll see how it feels after a day or two. I normally lift today but I guess that's out the window.

Fortunately I don't skate until Friday at the earliest and realistically probably Sunday because my Friday skate is during work hours and I can't always steal away to do it.

Same thing happened to me on the golf course of all pieces a few days ago. Ball rolled off the edge of the green, I went looking for it and slipped awkwardly, felt a painful numbing tinge in my knee and knew something was off. Finished the last few holes sort of hobbled but it got progressively worse over the next couple of days. Knee swelled up a bit and I couldn't bear weight on it by last night or straighten it out fully, and needed help bending it. Woke up today and it is doing better, though. Just a sprain. Our summer league season finishes tomorrow and I hope to be back to play by Monday for the playoffs, we're playing in the WHL Royals home rink this week. I hope your knee recovers quickly also. I thought I might be hosed as of 12 hours ago but once the swelling subsided I felt more re-assured.

Glad your knee is doing better. Mine sounds a bit less bad than yours since I haven't noticed any swelling. The pain was pretty annoying this morning but I'm actually feeling a lot better this afternoon after taking some ibuprofen. It's still sore and I'm not going to lift on it today but I'm encouraged by how much better it feels and I feel like I have much better flexibility already. I'm cautiously optimistic that I'll be back to normal in a day or two but I'm going to try and be patient and not push it with workouts if I'm not feeling it.

That's rad that you're playing in a WHL rink. I bet the ice is kickass.

Joining the jacked knee crew, although I tweaked mine about two months ago now, but just got around to really hitting it with PT. Patellofemoral pain syndrome sucks, but the PT has been great. A little sore the day after games but definitely getting better.

Our rink is shut down to redo the ice through Saturday (starting Thursday last week), so I guess a couple of week's rest couldn't hurt.

Speaking of injuries I finally got my MRI results for my lower back.

L4-5 slight bulged disc.
L5-S1 large bulge pushing on s1 nerve which is causing my right leg sciatica, lower back pain, and numbness behind knee and toes.

I go see a physiatrist next month. So far it's sounding like surgery is the only real solution. :smith:

Back pain loving sucks. I've been dealing with it for 4-5 years now. I've had x-rays, MRI, blood work, PT, PT again, sports medicine doc, spinal specialist, even acupuncture, and absolutely nothing has improved it. No sciatica, and it's "only" a constant 3-4 on the pain scale, so no surgery. I gave up and just live with it now. It's great not being able to bend over to pick your kids up without pain.

Good luck :smith:

I just played a weekend tournament out here and our team ended up winning the lower bracket. Just watching the upper division was like watching pros practice. Like, the difference between pros and midgets. Their shots were so hard and they were so fast I can't even imagine trying to play that level.

We played well and went into the championship with a +8 goal differential after 3 games, the other team with a +30 goal diff and a reputation for playing dirty. We ended up beating them 3-2 and I got a goal in the championship game. We had two games per day, an 8am and a 7am. Those were brutal.

Got home last night and realized we had a league game tonight. It was a pretty intense game as well and I was pooped. I don't want any more hockey this week. Make it stop.

The learning curve for hockey is so steep and the differences in levels of play are stark. I got cheap on-the-glass seats to a Chicago Wolves (AHL) game and was in awe the entire time at how fast and skilled everyone was, but pretty much every player on either team would be considered a plug in the NHL.

In the last 2 minutes of Rat Hockey, one of our goalies took a shot to the temple and was clearly concussed. The ambulance was called, but because of our loving stupid healthcare system, it seemed like he was going to refuse to let them take him to the hospital because of the bill. I really hope they talk him into letting them take him to the hospital.

That’s when you order an Uber and offer to pay them a cleaning fee for the smell. It’ll still come out to thousands less than an ambulance

Patients have the right to refuse treatment, for better or worse. It sucks, but we can't hold them against their will. Just wait until they lose consciousness and then they can't refuse! And yes, that's a real thing.

That would be bad too - concussed guy in the back seat has a seizure, falls over, vomits, aspirates it... Uber guy is just gonna pull over, call 911, and take selfies with the almost-dead person.

Friday hockey report - got to play an OT period because we were the last game of the night. And we played the whole game 4 on 4 because I guess everyone is on vacation? Managed an assist, dinged one off the post, and flattened a tiny young woman on the other team who had never played until this season She ran into me fell over. We won 6-4, coming back from getting stomped a couple of weeks ago.

We tied one and won one, i had a secondary assist in the second game, but more importantly, I lived to tell about it. I'm 36 years old and my ankles were ground into a fine powder because I'm carrying around an extra 20-30lbs. Running lengths of an arena floor in 38C/100F heat is a challenge. But it was still fun and this is how champions are made.

Bonus congratulatory memmo from SAS favourite Pierre McGuire

edit: Our goalie was insane - the playoffs were two best-of-3 rounds. He went 4-1, with a .970 SV%, 0.61GAA and 2 shutouts. Saved 96 of 99 shots against over the 5 games. The only game he lost was a 1-0 OT game, lol. Even more impressive is how that wasn't even enough to get the playoff MVP award - our GM locked that down with 11pts in 5GP including a hat-trick in the deciding game of the finals. Some pretty clutch performance from those guys.

Hell yeah.

I play ball hockey once a week but it's like an outdoor thing and not a league. Just pickup for people in the area. It's still fun though and good exercise.

Also doing ice again. Some of the local college kids came back for last night's pickup and man the pace was up for that. I could keep up mostly but I forgot what it was like to play at such a high pace. The summer league I'm in is like a combination league of various skill levels so the pace of play is pretty slow compared to what I'm used to. But feeling that pace in a pickup game again was somethin'. I'm lucky my body didn't explode. I am really looking forward to Fall league now though as that league is closer to the pace of what I was doing yesterday.
