Man, that squelchy FM bass. Sounds like an old DOS game. So good.
If people have suggestions for more stuff with this sound I'd love em.

I really liked Mentallo & The Fixer but they really made me appreciate the skills of bands like FLA. The early M&F albums were sequenced on some poo poo DOS program running on a 286. From what I’ve heard from that Return to Grimpen Ward best of/remix album, they either didn’t have the musical knowledge or tech skills to actually change the songs much and just tweaked the synths and ran the same sequences through them.

They have a bunch of side projects you can check out that are very similar.

Stay away from Vengeance is Mine, that’s gotta be one of the absolute worst albums I own. Haven’t really checked out their modern albums.

In this case it seems to be a stripped down, deconstructed version of the track. The original ones have a lot more effects muddying stuff up, and the synth is not as up front and center. It's cool from a synth nerd perspective, although I'm sure most people prefer something more busy and atmospheric.

Mentallo & The Fixer rankings for me:

Burnt Beyond Recognition > Where Angels Fear to Tread > Revelations 23 > Algorythum > Love is the Law >>>>> Vengeance is Mine

BRB I think is their standout release. The production and writing is much more lush than the previous two albums.

Angels is basically a more refined version of Revelations. Both are good, although some of the Revelations tracks overstay their welcome.

After Dwayne left, I appreciate Gary doing something different for Algorythum. Much slower and atmospheric. The first three albums are classic, I think this one is a step below but I still like it. Haven’t listened to it in a long time though.

Love is the Law is very hit or miss, mostly miss unfortunately. Murderers Among Us is one of their most banging synth rhythms though.

Vengeance is dire. Sounds like somebody gave them a dollar store sound effects CD and dared them to use every drat clip. I would have to think hard to come up with an album I own that I dislike more.

Haven’t seriously checked out anything before Revelations or their “comeback” stuff. The early stuff seems a bit primitive.

It was quite good, anyone know what the song is about?

This made me think of this video series I watched a while back about the underground music scene in the Soviet union:

Been listening to this Aleister Blake release a lot recently. It's a sideproject from the guy who records as IV Horseman, but this is a kind of gritty industrial thing that makes me think of Skinny Puppy in places: https://clandestinerecords.bandcamp.com/album/cyber-fame-real-pain. Just really great harsh stuff for when you want something that isn't cheerful.

Also, and tbh it's not nearly as good as the above haha, but I've finished up another PWYW release of my own. Kinda noisy EBM-ish industrial that has some acid stuff going on in places and a ton of samples. https://trellick.bandcamp.com/album/hostile-architecture

Looks like Matt Setzer (touring ohGr guitarists) is involved as well. It wears influences on it's black and red sleeve, but I can dig it.

A polite little mouse!
Tom Ellard is deleting the 1990s-2000s Severed Heads albums from Bandcamp, cos they don't sell.

quote:

Dear listeners, after as much as thirty years in service, some of the mid_era albums on our Sevcom Bandcamp have a very small, if any, audience. At one time these albums would have fallen out of print. Now they take up space where younger work should be seen and heard. (While the older albums are being preserved by specialty labels.)

[Some time ago I removed the Blubberknife album from Bandcamp. No one seemed to notice or care — you can see how some titles just become ‘zombies’.]

I am planning a compilation that will condense the best of these ‘zombie titles’: Cuisine, Gigapus, Haul rear end, Under Gail Succubus.

If you are the owner of any of these titles, or wish to purchase the old albums please download your files SOON. Otherwise look forward to single download title with some special features later this year.

Cuisine w Piscatorial (1991), Gigapus++ (1994), Haul rear end (1998), Under Gail Succubus (2006).

they're $5 each so get yourself the downloads while you can: https://severedheads.bandcamp.com/

remember, nobody ever got fired for giving Tom money

he's putting together a best-of, to be called Focus:

hope you got in there quick! Focus is now up, replacing Gigapus++.

https://severedheads.bandcamp.com/album/focus-a-mid-life-crisis-compilation

Tom Ellard posted:

Today I have made available the compilation we described back in June. It's called "FOCUS A Mid-Life Crisis Compilation", has 35 tracks and includes a 45 page CD-sized booklet with stories and lyric sheets for the included albums.

We saw many downloads of the old albums, but that seems to have faded as everyone successfully backed up their copies. In case of file disaster contact tom@nilamox.com and please be patient as there are many of you.

If you owned a copy of Gigapus, you now automatically own FOCUS instead. This provides the largest number of people with free copies, and you may just want the booklet.

What happens with all the other tracks? Obscure and demo tracks will soon be featured in free podcasts in which the stories and contexts of these tracks can now be properly told.

Thank you.

edit: Tom: "The next merger is to bundle all of Twister/Retread into Dead Eyes Opened 94. No tracks will be lost."
