I agree that the callers these days are fans who are way too deferential. A true weirdo like a Spike or an Avalanche Bob (RIP) is an impossibility these days. But let's not forget Kaitlin from Rochester who is becoming one of my new favorite callers. Her antagonism is a breath of fresh air

veni veni veni
Jun 5, 2005

I’ve poo poo on her calls in the past but that is a good point.

I do really miss the balance of callers back in the day. An average show would go like, ridiculous Spike call, couple of normal calls, some random that just happened to be listening, Petey incoherently talking about some dumb poo poo, Wurster, good caller Tom can riff off of like Laurie maybe a few more boring fan calls…

Now it’s

Omg Tom I’m a huge fan
Omg Tom I’m a huge fan
Omg Tom I’m a huge fan
Wurster
Omg Tom I’m a huge fan

He also just makes fun of callers way less now which was my favorite thing.

It’s fine. The show is still fun and Tom and Jon will never not be funny but it lost a lot after WFMU. It’s a miracle we even got avalanche bob in the podcast era.

It was easier to get weirdos to randomly tune in when he was over the air and people still used radios.

GoutPatrol
Oct 17, 2009

*Stupid Babby*

That just comes from being on WFMU. It is a fun station I would listen to besides the Best Show. But the older weirdos wanted to call because they would hear themselves on the radio, and your voice on a podcast just doesn't cut the mustard.

veni veni veni
Jun 5, 2005

Yeah the show is far past it’s peak, but I don’t think there is any way to recapture the magic because afaik he wasn’t allowed to make any money off his show on WFMU and how do you find someone like spike for a podcast. Plus toms demeanor is just more laid back now.

A past it’s prime best show is still better than pretty much every other podcast though.

The best part about the weirdos is that they were not fans. I don’t think spike even listened to show. I think he just liked to hear himself talk.

Dr.Radical
Apr 3, 2011
I think part of it is Tom seems to be in a good place in life now. He has less aggression to get out of his system.

The bit about Spike is absolutely true. People actually want him to call in and Tom reached out at one point but it's not the radio so Spike doesn't care.

A lot of them weren’t even really WFMU listeners, just total randos browsing the dial. The other WFMU shows get that too and I love it. Sometimes they’re obnoxious and sometimes they’re just wondering what this weird poo poo is that they happened to stumble across. Then they’re all confused when there isn’t even a call screener and they get right on the air.

Also I just got my dj premiums and the shirts are cool as always

Cassius also regularly called in to Brian Lehrer on WNYC in the mornings over the years, and there are few people I have ever wanted to punch through the radio more tbqh.

Great caller.

That’s basically the first YouTube clip that comes up when you google search the best show, so it might not have been that much research.

I just put that to the test and it's definitely not. It's not exactly a deep cut but whatever. More effort than a lot of people will put into an interview regardless. Didn't even pop up in three pages for me after googling multiple wordings of the best show.

A pretty dumb argument in general, I apologize, but it’s definitely one of the clips I had heard before I was a big fan of the show. Everyone’s algorithm is different, but it’s near the top for me when I search in YouTube (not google for me, you’re right). There are two clips of it on YouTube (at least). One has 65k views and the other has 30 something. Most best show clips have like 10k. There are some standouts like paul f Tompkins talking about gathering of the juggalos that have a lot more views, but jazz man is up there. Anyways, dumb argument and it’s a very funny clip that everyone should hear because it’s funny. I’ll listen to the full interview sometime I’m sure but I’m in podcast hell right now with way too much to catch up on.
