poo poo tradespeople:
Tiler. poo poo job and he was a dick head. Kicked off when I pointed out a few badly placed tiles. Went apeshit when I said "are you happy with them"?
All plasterers. Especially the ones who subcontract everything out.
All joiners except #2.
Builder (omg, the worst).
All roofers (didn't end up fixing it in the end so next time it rains it will leak). It's just the chimney flashing but quotes from £1200 (cash only from an Irish gentleman) to "you need a new roof mate, be about £30k".
Plumber.
Gas guy. The state of my flue. I think it might be illegal.

It also looks marginally impressive from the outside so immediately all quotes jump 50% as they don't understand you're just a cheapskate goon. The other annoying thing is they come round, take an hour of your time up looking at the job and then never reply to you again.

This, plus the fact materials have gone up 200% in the last year mean not much has been achieved. Feck paying £30 for a sheet of MDF.

You defrauded students. You don't get to take the high road on anyone.

I've had pretty good luck with mybuilder.com (new floor, new front door, fireplace replacement, plasterer). You post a job then people reply through the website, which works quite well for those of us with social anxiety because you don't actually have to do any human interaction until they've given you an estimate and you've read their reviews, so you are pretty sure you might actually want them to do the job.

yeah it's the competency that's the issue. If they were that evil to be planning it, we'd know from leaks. And we do, we know that the explicit plan has always been to kill everyone and ignore the consequences. If they were competent they'd know that what they're doing shrinks the workforce at the same time as pissing it off and giving nearly everyone a sick relative, with no economic benefit. Historically, these are the peak conditions for socialism and social democracy. Their protection will run out as people realise that long-term health consequences can't just be ignored.

Hancock wasn't any smarter than that, he just fluked a win with the vaccines because he watched a film, then got himself too compromised to threaten SAGE members with the neil fergusson treatment

This is a picture of my velux window - https://imgur.com/gallery/ibzmvr0 - it doesn't look like much but the frame on the left hand side has warped and it won't close completely, in the winter I seal it around the edges with black bags, I am terrified that the entire window will need replacing and it will cost ££££'s,

dumb thing is its might be the most minor 10 minute job to straighten out the frame but i just don't know and other than a slight bit of damage on the wallpaper from when i left the window too far open on a rainy day it doesn't really cause any problems

Is it warped or is it like, not set in the frame properly?

How does that window normally open? Because that looks more like it's jumped the track rather than a warp in the frame.

Really want to switch careers into something I can reasonaby do as self employed but I'm all out of ideas. Can I get into computer touching as an example without the need to physically touch computers?

Computer touching is pretty much the perfect way of doing this.

Alternatively, a lot of customer service/support roles were moving to working from home even before the covid stuff - but pay varies wildly.

Okay assuming this is a centre-pivot window like this:

there does seem to be some separation at the bottom left but I think that's symptom, not cause. I think the pivot itself has failed - looking at the manual it seems like they've got a solid lock on the right but a latch to lock in on the left (so you install it by putting the pivot into the right side then clicking it into place on the left), which suggests it might be able to work itself free.

It does look to me like it's out of square consistently, in the same way, at both the top and the bottom so yeah I would have guessed falling out of the mechanism rather than the actual window going out of true.

I also like to imagine it comes with some mid 80's copy protection scheme that barely works and if you don't activate it you aren't allowed to look through it.

Though it's a common trope, IKEA manuals really are incredibly straightforward, even if you are illiterate as hell. It's just that the product QC is usually so crap that any big flatpack piece will have a few steps that require some extra shimming or drilling a new hole or something or else it sits a bit wobbly. Usually not a big deal either way though, and our corner sofa/pull out bed did well for years and is now our guestroom bed

I have to admit that *does* look like a satisfying handle to pull - good thickness, I have to assume a decent heft to it to stop the window just flying open and braining you - if it has a nice solid "clunk" when closing and locking I'd be extremely happy with my purchase. I have the two-way windows (pivot either from the side or the bottom) and - when properly greased and adjusted - they're great to close, like a nicely-made safe, but a bit underwhelming to open because of the lack of balance.

Twistos got it I think. Looks like the mechanism has come free. It may be repairable depending on the damage that caused it to come out as it is, and if that has been exacerbated by being left exposed to the elements for so long.

A replacement window is not that expensive in the grand scheme of things even if it does need to be fixed. You've probably paid for it in heating costs over the course its been broken like this already.

Decking is actually very difficult to do correctly and also incredibly expensive right now due to the soaring cost and scarcity of pressure treated timber.

I would seriously be putting considerable thought into any outdoor project this year.
