Few pages back, but that dolls house is gorgeous. Was it in this thread that someone posted the Youtube link to someone who had recreated the Addam's Family house? If not, do have a look. The dedication and attention to detail was mind-boggling. I have no idea who most of these philosophers are or what their ideas are. My only aim (philosophy?) is to leave the world a better place than I found it, in whatever way I can. Nothing I do will matter or be remembered in 100 years time, which is either depressing or freeing depending on my mood at the time. That 'nothing is more important than family' meme reminds me: last year I read a lot of biographies and listened to podcasts about people overcoming things. A lot of them talked about what gave their life meaning and purpose, and finding beauty in life when everything was going wrong. They all managed it, so either nihilists did not overcome the thing, or they're not the type to share their experiences. Some of them mentioned religion, some dedicated themselves to a cause, but almost everyone mentioned family. What was meant to be uplifting was actually pretty depressing, because they all gave the impression that the meaning and worth of a life was measured in love.

Oh dear me posted:
So it's about who decides that. An absurdist, as I understand it, would say that the universe is indifferent - there is no intrinsic value to anyone's beliefs. They're all just people having thoughts. Good? Bad? Human inventions with no root in anything higher than what some bipedal creatures have conjured up. However, those creatures will obviously disagree. Now we obviously sit on one side of that disagreement, and we believe we're right. But that doesn't come from some universal value system inherent in the universe, it's just the result of what we think based on the evidence around us, how we were brought up, and a million billion other factors that have caused us to form our beliefs. Does that mean they're meaningless and the same as the Tories'? No, because by believing them we give them meaning. We don't need some higher power or philosophy to say 'this is meaningful', because to us it is and that's all that matters. Our beliefs, their consequences, and, well, everything have about as much value as we decide they have, but the universe doesn't give a poo poo. Or rather, in my view, can't give a poo poo.

I can't help but feel that there is a certain level of selection bias which leads to that sample. I have seen quite a few cases where engaging with your family more was definitely not the answer. That in quite a few cases defining who matters in your life youself rather than who you were thrown in with is essential for some people's mental well-being.

Gyro Zeppeli posted:As a noodle connoisseur, shin ramyun is a solid pick. Indomie Mie Goreng is also a classic. As somebody who through lockdown has tried many many types of instant noodles (probably like 30+), including some only available at specialist Chinese grocers... this man knows his stuff. Samyang and Indomie Mie Goreng (as well as the chicken flavour (yet still vegetarian)) versions are absolutely pro-tier non-expensive noodles. Not all of the Samyang noodles are ludicrously spicy though. There are some that are just called "Samyang ramen" which are a (still spicy but not blow-your-head-off-spicy) beef flavour which are excellent. Nissin noodles are good. There's a "Sesame Oil" flavour which is really good, and so is "Black Garlic Tonkotsu" flavour. The best I've had though were a brand called "Pami". They're much more expensive than your usual instant noodles - but still only like £9 for 4 packs so not absolutely crazy. I had some fried scallion flavour and basically all you get is a block of dried noodles plus a sachet of oil, but you cook them up and the noodles are way way better than your standard fare - excellent texture and taste, and then the oil you add to them is this intensely richly flavoured onion oil, and that's really all they need. It's making my mouth water just writing about them. My pro tip though is if you're making instant noodles a lot, get yourself some good quality Tamari (it's like soy-sauce but richer in flavour and also incidentally gluten-free), some toasted sesame seeds, and some Lao Gan Ma (that's the brand) Spicy Chilli Crisp - which is crispy fried chilli bits in oil, with black beans and stuff. You can add all of these to practically any kind of noodles and it'll make them tons better and more interesting. You can also just make noodles and add no other seasoning except for these things and it'll still be delicious.

Chapagetti is the best instant noodles. Fry up some lardons and kimchi and throw it all together and you got a stew going baby. Some variety of buldak-bokkeum-myeon a solid backup if I cant get chapagetti.

Place in a 6in pan, boil the kettle and add just enough water to float the noodles. If you want to turn it into a meal, add some actual kimchi, a couple of eggs (raw or pre-boiled/sliced) and some grilled pork belly. Now I’m hungry.

I think atheists can still believe in universal good and bad. To be honest I’m doing my best to explain how it seems to me but I realise I’m doing quite poorly and this is because I don’t really know what I’m on about. I guess the important bit to me is realising everything just comes from a bunch of peoples heads and the collective agreements (and disagreements) that have been made by billions of chaotic individuals over thousands of years - some of it makes sense to me and some of it doesn’t and I pick and choose the bits that do and try and let them guide me.
