I think a lot of the problem is being born into one of those "better" countries and then realising why it is "better" is because it helped to gently caress over the places that are "worse". Like there are truly terrible things that happen in geopolitics that can't be traced back to England. But it's not as big a number as it should be.

I do have to ask though, are folks proud of where they live, and why?

poo poo. Left to their own devices, CHUDS would just make Frank Castle Captain America (If it hasn't been done already). Or Dr. Doom. Or maybe Galactus. Come to think of it, now I want to see Kingpin Captain America or a cross over where Lex Luthor gets the shield.

I mean Ta-Nehisi Coates in his recent run at writing Captain America curbed a bunch of ideas and phrases from Jordan Peterson and put them in the mouth of the Red Skull and people didn't notice for months, and when it was pointed out to Jorps that his rhetoric could easily be put in the mouth of a literal Nazi supervillain and the general public didn't bat an eye at it, instead of re-evaluating the poo poo he'd been spewing that led to that moment, Peterson instead went "gently caress yeah, Hail Hydra! I am the Red Skull!"

So yeah, you're spot on with that one.

"Politicizing" in this case blatantly means "having politics I don't like." Similar to whining about recent Wolfenstein games being "politicized," as if a series about an American soldier (with an immigrant family background) killing hordes of Nazis including Hitler himself can't possibly contain any political messaging.

"Politics" is also twitter dipshit shorthand for "inclusion of a woman with a non-sexualized character design" or "inclusion of a racial or sexual minority under any circumstance". There is no reason for any character other than straight white males and their submissive helpmeets to exist in comics/video games/cartoons other than purely political reasons, you see.

IIRC in the early games the only thing mentioned was that his father was Polish-American. But as subsequent games tried to become more involved than just "move from point A to B while killing Nazis" they started expanding his family background, which included his mother being Jewish.

Whenever "politics" comes up as a complaint in terms of education and entertainment, I'm reminded of a quote by Michael Parenti:

quote:

I once taught a mass media class at Cornell University. Midway through the course some students began to complain that they were getting only one side, one perspective. I pointed out that, in fact, the class discussions engaged a variety of perspectives and some of the readings were of the more standard fare. But the truth was, admittedly, that the predominant thrust of the class and assigned readings was substantially critical of the mainstream media and of corporate power in general. Then I asked them, “How many of you have been exposed to this perspective in your many other social science courses?” Of the forty students—mostly seniors and juniors who had taken many other courses in political science, economics, history, sociology, psychology, anthropology, and mass communications—not one hand went up (a measure of the level of ideological diversity at Cornell). Then I asked the students, “How many of you complained to your other instructors that you were getting only one side?” Again not a hand was raised, causing me to say, “So your protest is not really that you’re getting only one side but that, for the first time, you’re departing from that one side and are being exposed to another view and you don’t like it.” Their quest was not to investigate opinion heterodoxy but to insulate themselves from it.

There's a comic which I tried to find (though I didn't try too hard) where it's a "Choose your character" screen in a video game and it's like ten white dudes and the caption says "All is well," the second panel has one brown character and the caption says "Being political," and the last has two brown characters and the caption says "White genocide" which is pretty spot on for what those people actually believe.

I figured it was only a matter of time, because The Weather Channel talks a lot about the dangers of climate change and how it's affecting things, so I can imagine there's a lot of "Why can't they give us the weather without all those darn POLITICS."

Oh I'm not even saying "America is the worst country ever" or anything, in general I'm mostly happy to live in this country outside of how completely hosed our health care system is. In general, America is better than a lot of other countries one can be born in, and it does seem like we're occasionally capable of making progress towards things getting better (even if the last four years have been pretty depressing). This is however very different from being proud of America or proud to be American.

And I guess honestly I might be reading it in a more positive way than the truth behind it, like some people might have said no because "How can I be proud of America with those commie liberal Dems stealing elections and trying to destroy our way of life?"

I can see all that and I wasn't calling you out for anything.

The idea of being proud of just being born somewhere always seemed odd to me. I mean, it just luck and a roll of the dice. Not sure why I need to be proud of the fact that I was born in New Mexico or forced to grow up in Delaware. Guess I need some spontaneous music lessons in a WalMart or something.

Or be forced to go fight in a war.

I think it was that Cap was made into a Nazi beyond his control by reality magic bullshit and Secret Empire ended with the real Captain America who hates Nazis and punches the poo poo out of them on sight being restored and all was well again.

The current Cap storyline, The United States of Captain America, involves Steve Rogers losing faith in America and what it stands for and what Captain America is supposed to represent, so he goes on a soul-searching road trip across the US with Bucky Barnes, Sam Wilson, and John Walker (all of whom have also been Cap at one point or another, so they know what he's going through) and along the way the run into a bunch of local street-level wannabe Captain Americas of all walks of life who are all trying to do some good in their communities because they were inspired by Steve's heroism and it renews his faith in America and the American people.

Chuds have been brain-ripping mad about this storyline for months now because it features a Gay Captain America, a Black Woman Captain America, an Asian American and Pacific Islander Captain America, and a Native American Captain America and it's finally wormed its way into the mainstream it seems.

This is the guy Isaac Chotiner interviewed because he'd argued we should take white grievance seriously (as in listen and kowtow to them not as in fear it), blames the left for conservatives going to Trump, and doesn't think structural racism is real:

quote:

So with things like schools still being segregated, or racial and ethnic minorities receiving lower-quality health care, or minority job applicants being denied more often, you’re saying this is not coming from the government, it’s coming from individual people, and so the racism is not structural?

Yeah. For example, a lot of those individual measures, like I don’t want my kid marrying an African-American, or I’m against interracial marriage, or I don’t want a black boss, in the survey data, it’s very low now. It’s not perfect. It will take a little bit more time before we get rid of it entirely.

Just a bit, yeah.

“Structure” is a word that’s sometimes chucked out there. O.K., people are not individually racist anymore, but the structures are there. Well, which structures? I can be convinced. If you can’t get insurance if you live in an area even though other indicators are identical to another area, and the only difference is the ethnic composition, then that’s an argument. It could just be you’ve got a stingy government, and people don’t want to be taxed to pay for these services.

Also the fact that these structures existed for a very long time.

Right. That’s often the argument. People will go back to the history, and I say, “Yeah, and there were anti-Semitic structures in Europe, and in the U.S., there were anti-Catholic structures, and no one would talk about them today, because they’re not existing anymore.” If something existed in the past, there are at least a couple of possibilities: No. 1, it could still exist. No. 2, it could not exist, or, No. 3, even the reverse could exist. Those are three hypotheses that need to be tested to see which one holds up.

But you were aware of all these studies about trying to get jobs, quality of health care, how much schools are still segregated?

Right. The question with school segregation is, again, how much is that is down to an individual decision about where to live. It’s not people having their windows broken and kept out of white areas. I think that I would see this as individual choices about where to live, and, yes, there is, I’m sure, white avoidance of diverse areas and we know that exists, but this is a sort of ethnic preference. It’s not clear to me that that is the same as, you know, “separate but equal.”
