Haiti was the first country that the US truly hosed. The French and the British hosed Haiti for most of the 19th, but the US has been loving Haiti for the last century plus. Occupying the country multiple times to prevent funny ideas about democracy/socialism take hold, supporting coups and counter-coups with abandon. It's not really a shocker that Haiti is in about the same way as Lebanon. It's national history is one of national tragedy.
