I never go to this thread, because I'm always behind on the Filoni shows, and I'm still behind so I may not stick around , but since Bad Batch is coming out, I finally got around to finishing season 7 of Clone Wars, and I gotta gush about it. I forgot how good the show looked, but also the music was amazing.

The one thing I did know was coming was Ahsoka beating Maul, mainly because a lot of internet jerks wouldn't shut up about it. And y'know what? I never really liked Maul. He's basically a non-character in the movie, even though he has a cool design and some cool scenes. I didn't think it was a good idea to bring him back, even though I knew that the EU already pulled that trick. I didn't really like his whole crime lords bit, or the new Dathomir backstory, or his brother. Checking back on those episodes, it's no wonder they didn't strike me the right way, they have to cover so much ground conjuring cross and double cross and triple cross and quadruple cross and shifting opinions in the public back and forth and back in a very short amount of time. It all felt very contrived.

But when he shows up in season 7? I liked him. He's muttering inconsistently. He's confused and paranoid. In retrospect, I guess he was trying to imitate Sideous earlier, and now he's come up definitively short and is scrabbling for options. He's a crazed bum on the galactic stage. A gnat who smells bug spray. And so it's not much surprise that he's not doing so great when his final plan after his final plan fails. And then when the actual fight comes, he ends up fighting Ahsoka in a high place without much room to move. Ahsoka's been hopping around the entire series like a jackrabbit. Maul has a bad track record with falling down holes.

And it comes as like part of an apotheosis for Ahsoka. After leaving the order, she found in herself her own reasons to fight beyond just having been brought up for it. She's thinking about the implications of the Jedi Council having its own politics and drama, maybe she'll rejoin some day. She still looks up to Anakin, and Anakin's at his luciferiest, smugly shining his brightest ever before things start to come crashing down, and maybe Ahsoka sees some of Anakin's remaining immaturity as well. She's becoming an adult. Her powers are stronger than ever as she comes into her own.

And then there's a ticking clock as in the background the Jedi council slowly recounts the plot of Revenge of the Sith, and of course Ahsoka's not going to get to reckon with rejoining the order. I already knew that it was part of a contrived reason to make sure Rex had an alibi for not killing younglings, but the way Ahsoka gets the chip out of Rex's head and does her fighting retreat was still pretty dramatic. Maul's also there, looking a bit better, got some great music going when he's onscreen. I guess after the moment he was dreading finally came, he didn't have to be paranoid anymore. He's gonna go bumming around the galaxy getting absolutely nothing done until Rebels. Ahsoka and Rex didn't spell out how they were going to wander off and reappear in Rebels either, but I liked their tragic moment burying their former comrades. It's nice.

The only loose thread is that the Martez sisters stole some spice, and it's still there in the hold when they got to Coruscant. They really gotta offload that somewhere.

Well, he is running the Crimson Dawn syndicate in Solo, so there's that.

Loved Maul destroying the ship from the inside and backstabbing (given who he is, can it even be called that?) Ahsoka at the end.

This show wants me to believe a universe with cloning tech to this level, where people can be healed and cyborged up from almost any injury, but they cant preserve genetic material? Why is this even a problem thats happened more than once? Also if shes such a perfect copy of Jango why is she blonde and a girl? The only explanation that makes sense is that shes trans, but I'm sure its considerably stupider than that.

I think it's been mentioned before in this thread, but a reasonable explanation is that the cloning process uses up some of the donated genetic material. I'd also guess that cloning the donated material also doesn't work well - maybe multiple generations of clones get wonkier due to copying error? Since Jango's been dead for a couple years and the Kaminoans have been churning out armies of clones in that time, I'd say it's not surprising they're getting near the end of their stock.

As for why Omega is Omega - well, she's a contingency plan, but also a secret contingency plan. Random human lab assistant on Kamino is a little strange, but apparently unaltered baby clone might have raised some eyebrows. Either they're fine with future clone armies being blonde ladies or they've got some way to reset the tweak for Omega's donor material. Maybe she's an XY female? Maybe she's got some kind of conjoined Jango twin inside her? Who knows?

I was thinking, what if Disney had just made Filoni the Fegie of Star Wars back when they decided to make new films? Rather then JJ being the guy who starts it again, we had him. Yea we probably would have seen all his OCs and stuff, but would that have been bad? He's shown to know what people want from Star Wars, he knows the lore and can work within it while not being beholden to it. He creates good stories and characters.

Cross-Section
Mar 18, 2009

Because Filoni still had relatively-little experience back in 2012 and needed a few more Star Wars projects under his belt before he could have the level of clout to actually be a Feige-type

Feige had worked on more than a dozen Marvel movies before Iron Man had even come out

Robot Style
Jul 5, 2009

Yeah, Filoni seems like a good choice now, but the reason Feige was in that position in the first place was because he'd already had several years of producing Marvel movies before starting development on the MCU. Putting 2013 Dave Filoni in charge of Star Wars would have been like hiring someone to take over a farm just because they're running a successful restaurant.

The other option might have been to promote him to an executive position that has no real practical responsibilities, but is basically just a glorified "idea guy", which I don't think would have worked. Tons of writers and directors probably had ideas for what a "Star Wars Episode 7" could be, and it would have been tough to hire anyone on the condition of not getting to implement any of them, and instead doing whatever The Cartoon Guy wants.

It's also worth considering what Filoni's 2013 ideas would have looked like. He was a Star Wars fan, but he was also a Star Wars fan. Wiping the slate clean wasn't a guarantee at that point, and although Clone Wars toed the line on continuity sometimes, Filoni is the guy who's leading the charge on incorporating elements from the EU. There's a chance that his version of the sequels would have featured Bug Orgies, or BDSM aliens dropping a moon on Chewie.

And that's only if he didn't just dutifully execute Lucas' outlines for the sequels, which is something that Disney wasn't interested in doing anyway.

Larryb
Oct 5, 2010

It could be interesting to see if he could spin something good out of the sequel era (since as I understand it he had very little involvement with Resistance) but given the lack of EU material regarding it I’m not sure if Disney really cares about those movies anymore.

Hell, I kind of want to see him direct and/or write a live action Star Wars movie at some point.

I mean, at least the prequel trilogy was consistent(ly awful).

A sequel trilogy that was supervised by a Feige-like executive would have had more consistency at least. You’d get a new trilogy of mostly good films that worked together and didn’t shake up the status quo too much (like Marvel).

Then again, they had Kathleen Kennedy for that and we still got what we got.

But really, the reason the ST imploded was the creative whiplash between Abrams (mostly fan-service with a few original pieces added, mostly rehashing the original films) and Johnson (willing to take the universe in a new direction).

Robot Style
Jul 5, 2009

That's true. There's compilations of in-theater reactions on youtube for the sequels, and the moments that get big reactions in 7 are all things that have to do with recognizing something from the older movies, while the big reactions in 8 are mostly due to developments within the story of that movie. The Abrams movies are kind of designed to be seen once in a theater and then never again, while Johnson's movie seems to be more constructed to fit into a multi-generational saga that people are going to see several times over the course of a few decades.

You'd think they'd have made a rough outline of the general plot of the trilogy before TFA was even put into production but it seems to me like they didn't really have a plan at all and were basically making poo poo up as they went along. Is this more or less accurate?
