VR will be good when devs start making more third-person games that just focus on "hey this is a cool display method that lets you see 360 degrees in the game world" instead of "wow it's so Immersive it really makes you feel like you are John Callofduty"

Where's the VR space RTS where you watch the battle from any angle and command your fighters to move around in 3d thanks to your technologically advanced depth perception?

VR especially needs more games you can just play from your chair/couch while using the headset as "just" a fancy display, without running around literally blindfolded and knocking all the crap off your shelves with motion controls, or having to set up a whole separate "VR room". If you can just buy a peripheral headset and use it in your normal set up it will be a lot easier to pick up, especially once headsets start to get cheaper. Leave the full motion tracking as a super niche thing for the same kind of ultranerds who set up a whole fake car to play racing sims in their house.

Feeling the desire for VRTS hard, but a. it's still a pita as just a display and b. man I wish I had the space for a vr room.

Simulators and third person action games VR games have been made, the most popular VR platform to date has almost none of them.

You're not allowed to crumble unless I say so.
Growing pains.

VR or AR will get better.

Maybe even be like the video arcade in the old Robotech cartoon.

If anyone remembers earlier VR - we’ve come a long way.

But poo poo yeah, it would be nice to play an RTS and you can just stand up to get a higher point of view of the map.

When I played RE7 I had more fun poking my head into cabinets - under car seats - around corners.

AR lets me fulfill my dreams of a shaky image floating in my camera frame unaffected by the real world terrain and objects around it

I feel sorry for all the people who got snookered by hololens and magic leap thinking they were going to get a new reality overlay but instead got flat images jittering around madly on a screen an inch from their eye

A VR headset was worth it just for Blade & Sorcery, and that's not even a very good game.

That might be an unpopular opinion, but it's true and it's the hill I'll die on.

I loved HL1, Blue Shift, and Opposing Force, and I was floored by how little the game advanced on its predecessors

The age has nothing to do with the fact that the extra long driving sections(plural!) where little happens suck and it was so in love with the shiny new physics code technology that it makes you repeatedly do the exact same puzzle where you make a ramp by weighing down one side. The plot that everyone bitched about ending on a cliff hanger with episode 2 is just an escalated sequence of made up crap with no cohesion or explanation given. It's just set piece after set piece of "oh we're doing this now."

The fact that it attempted a story in a fps when that idea was new does not mean it was good in the slightest.

Also, the guns just feel... bad which is kind of important in an fps. Which incidentally Halo 2 did pretty well so yeah, I would rather go back to that one.

I like the vehicles, particularly along the coast. Feels like a road trip.

Half Life 2 isn't really a shooter. It uses those mechanics, but the point is to be experiential and immersive, it just so happens that the game mechanics for first person games and the input paradigms that people are most familiar with are derived from shooters. As linear as the story is, it allows enough wiggle room in your approaches for the kind of emergent gameplay you might get from an immersive sim. The game is always desperately pleading with you to use the gravity gun so you're doing something other than aiming at enemy and click button till die.

Consider that the first "walking simulator" was a Half Life 2 mod. The guns aren't the point.

Big props to whoever recommended the hunter: cotw. It's shooting and gameplay mechanics make for some very satisfying video gaming. Not to mention the wonderful natural scenery.

First game ever I'm quite happy to throw a few dollars at for some maps and guns. The UI needs work though.

I'm so bored with the USA.
VR would be awesome if it didn’t require an intensely uncomfortable headset and also make me sick for days if I play anything involving walking at all. And snap movement or whatever it’s called isn’t an acceptable workaround. The entire point of VR is immersion and teleporting instantly shatters that.

It’s kind of cool in ED, I guess, but still uncomfortable enough for me that I went back to a TrackIR setup pretty quickly, back when I was trying to find some form of enjoyment in that puddle of a game.

Uh... Kupo?

VR is only useful for putting a skin over the VR field to trick your brain into thinking the mundane room you’re in is a volcano or spaceship or whatever. To that end I’d have to ask “so what?”, like what a dumb thing.

Further, the best possible usage for VR is high tech porn and it is about 50 years behind being cool or dope. I think until there’s an application that syncs up your VR system with a real-world doll such that if you move the doll the in-game avatar moves or reacts too, it’s all just bad and weird porn. And even then, that’s still just absolutely incredibly gross.

Also worth noting that “best” does not always mean “good”.

The video game side of VR is even dumber because it’s rare that there’s a good first person video game where you mostly gently caress around in a single boxed room, or are stationary the whole time. Outside of beatsaber or something similar, there’s just no real appeal to VR gaming. It’s the ambulatory aspect that is complete poo poo. I guess a seated VR experience with intense seat vibrations would be dope so you can pretend to pilot a mech like in Mechwarrior or like Neon Genesis Evangelion or something maybe. Like maybe you control the systems and torso but not the legs? Idk.

VR systems are like massage chairs at the mall. They seem really great while at the mall, but the minute you actually have one it’s useless and just a massive regret.

VR systems/gaming is so dumb and bad I’m glad that Facebook blows its ill-gotten billions on it.
