I used to listen to this one internet station that had the same playlist for years (probably still up, even). A few tracks had various points where they would cut out or reset or what have your so after awhile you'd be like oh hey this is about to cut out it's the same file as always. Also made me laugh when I'd hear a not hosed up copy elsewhere.

The majority of my early mp3 collection was ripped 56kbps shoutcast streams. They would start with a bit of the previous track, and sometimes it's still a little weird to hear these songs without the "intro".

Look at all these dweeb who don't have taped copies of records where the song skips ahead a-- different part of the song lol

This track is called Sentient Six.

Last Chance posted:It sounds like something a label or just a jerk would create in order to pollute file sharing services with songs that looked to to be around the correct file size and length but were just garbage. Labels really did that! I had a version of Robot Rock by Daft Punk that just repeated the first four bars of the song over and over again. I never heard the real song on radio, so for years I thought it was just them leaning a bit too much into the "robot" gimmick

Where do you get the latest software that is still compatible with DK1? I still have mine somewhere in the basement. I made the mistake of not archiving the correct nvidia drivers and supporting software for my eMagin Z800 so now it's pretty much a nonfunctional tech ornament Half-Life 2 in janky VR stereo mode was pretty cool in 2006 though

If I'm too lazy to play my last and currentish gen VR stuff (and my Samsung GearVR for my drone) I really don't have to to get these oldies going. (Saying that, if anyone has a VirtualBoy I will pay for it, really regret selling mine) All nvidia drivers are available - theres a specific archive: https://www.nvidia.com/Download/Find.aspx?lang=en-us

The funniest thing about the 3dvisor was that shortly after i bought it, they doubled the price from $900 to $1800 and pivoted from consumer to industrial customers. I bet I could have made my money back and more if I had sold it. The company is still around selling oled microdisplays to the defense industry to this day

One of my in-laws ran a popular gaming accessories company back in the day, and they're doing the military/industrial thing too now. Deeper pockets I guess.

I'm getting some signs of life from the 3dvisor, I'll see if I can put together a winxp machine with a geforce 6800 and the required drivers eventually to take some photos of the microdisplays. The 3d effect was pretty good with lots of adjustability. Just putting them on and looking at the glow of the display I'd say the field of vision is somewhere between a 15" and 17" laptop display on your lap, i think the specs say 40 degree FOV. It's tiny and laughable compared to modern VR but at least there's no distortion. The other big limitation is that the head tracking is just 3DOF with accelerometers so it only tracks rotation. It was usable as long as you sat down in a chair. But the biggest problem is that they made no effort to block out surrounding light, you can see everything around you in your peripheral vision and it ruins immersion. Maybe it was done that way on purpose to make the experience less nauseating.

The easiest workaround is probably to use a different computer to prepare the card with a bootable dos partition and a local copy of the win95 / win98 installation files I'm rebuilding my AthlonXP 3000+ / nForce2 / geforce 6800 for the 3dvisor

I did 3.1, 95, XP, 7, and 10. Our Pentium II was bought far enough along that Dell sent us the 98 upgrade but it didn’t work for some reason so we just kept using 95 into 2001. Honestly didn’t have many problems with 95.

I've spent at least a little time using every version of Windows since 3.1, and it's amazing to me to think how inconsistent the experience has been. I actually saw Vista work well on some machines, but they were much more the exception than the rule. One of my favorites was XP 64, which almost nobody ran and had a reputation for being flaky or difficult, but was always great for me. I was sad to have to retire it.

If you have a system with components with well-written drivers for whatever version of Windows you're running, you'll be fine. Windows ME and Vista were, to me, totally fine. But it was also having the right combo of hardware that worked well for them that helped out a lot.

Yeah, I didn't spend much time with ME but had to support Vista, and the main difference between with machines where it was a good experience and the ones where it was mildly bad to terrible was drivers. I was honestly surprised the first time I ran a machine using Vista that actually ran well and was a good experience.

Did anyone else have an .MP3 with a random robotic voice that came on in the middle and said. "THIS IS A NON-COMMERCIAL DEMO FROM MONTERNET" [not sure on the spelling there, just guessing]? The, uh, Polish version of the theme song of Asterix Versus Caesar does not sound right without it. I recognize that Monternet seems to have been a Chinese telecom thing since 2000, but I got this song in 1999 from someone else's computer in our apartment building's network and I have no idea why it would be in English if it were related to that anyway. (it really is a good song, particularly knowing nothing about its origins as I did initially [no Asterix hate though]) Wow when did I write this? Thanks, Awful App, for remembering all my shameful drafts Wow, I am impressed. Windows Vista being hated always bothered me since I thought at the time it was the best version yet. Then, fortunately, Windows 8 came out and I literally still to this day do not know how to reliably get back to the main... Tiles? Is that what the default screen is even called? The Tile Screen? Ugh. So gross
