Aramoro posted:The main problem with that infographic is that it's not really wrong, but it doesn't show what people assume it shows. The US could have responded really well to the pandemic, but it actively decided not to. It's ability was just fine, it's will was lacking. I could have beaten Usain Bolt in a sprint if only I had the will.

I'm pretty sure the virulent, venomous, almost violent response to COVID measures caused people to dig up ye olde reports from the US the last time it was in a major pandemic ("Spanish" Flu of 1918) and the results basically showed that we are and always have been host to a huge population of fuckwits who would literally rather die and/or kill their loved ones than make a small sacrifice for the safety of the community.

The original map was a measure of resources without factoring in political and societal considerations. The US has loads of really good hospitals! The average person can't take time off to go to then and can't afford to pay for treatment anyway. The US has enough money to pay half the country to stay home! Wait no thats socialism, the economy must flow. The US has the production capacity to carpet the country in tests and PPE! Oh wait you have to do it through capitalism and everyone involved is horrifically corrupt even by capitalism standards. The US has some of the world's most foremost epidemiology experts! Epidemiologists can't afford the Splicer has a new favorite as of 11:54 on Jul 12, 2021 |

The UK literally did a pandemic response exercise in 2016 where the results were "the country is massively unprepared but here's how we could fix that" None of its recommendations were followed through on.

The other one is riding a mule with a limp that he bought off craigslist that morning Now imagine that as soon as the race starts, former US president Donald J. Trump runs into the track and trips the racehorse, breaking both its front legs and killing the jockey. Who was better prepared to win the race?

Imagine looking at the world's most powerful engine strapped to a tricycle driven by two toddlers that hate each other and saying "yes, this is The Best Car". Then a third toddler pees in the gas tank. There's no argument that the third toddler ruined the engine but they were already going nowhere fast. It should not come as a great surprise when it sees an ant, panics, and breaks all four legs. The mule is better prepared by default. I don’t care how good the thoroughbred’s cardiopulmonary shape is. If its brain is dysfunctional, so is the horse.
