CIG has finally created the first EVER full scale 100% realistic science-based explorable walkable REAL gas giant in gaming, only further proving that it is the ULTIMATE software powerhouse. This is the stuff of dreams(.txt), they're truly advancing game development, nay, mankind by hundreds of years by themselves.
Breathtaking. NASA will probably license SC so they can study gas giants.

Im just glad that I have finally learned that there is air in gas giants that I can breathe, and I can grow plants in the nourishing atmosphere, and that all it takes is to just float your city above the clouds.

This is the kind of reality I need because I believe in gravity goo as well and this is science fact, not fiction.

My level of surprise is zero and I hope this becomes the second life with a facelift they hope it will be, instead of the punishing game where just playing it will be like torture because that's the gaming experience CR is actually building.

I look forward to exciting mechanics like permanent crippled characters and characters that die and you just spawn into one of your family members; even if you had no family or offspring in your sordid characters past history.

I look forward to when people have to come to terms with the fact that it's just a video game for kids with an astonishingly high cost for paying to win it. Sort of like Cyberpunk 2077 was not gaming utopia of living a second life in blade runner.

I think you’ll find that is actually a HOLLOW experience and you’re WRONG and don’t understand game development because you can’t go into any of the buildings and watch the NPCs indistinguishable from real humans living actual lives and creating families and having jobs you can kidnap them from and put them in boxes and sell them to the Rape Pirates of Zuniclon B. And, err, I hate to bring it up since I'm on the obvious tiny minority who actually liked it (a lot), and you can't commit a crime in order to attract a policeman whose head you can then ransom to the grieving widow resulting in the ransom money being paid depriving the child from going to college and ending up in the streets where he'll grow to become the next kingpin, but Cyberpunk's Night City is also absolutely gorgeous as far as gaming cityscapes go. I have a thing for Sleeping Dogs' Hong Kong too, but it's getting old by now, my glasses are rose-tinted, and it's not futuristic.

Its trying to be a mix of Bespin and Bioshock Infinite's cloud city? But it doesn't work either way. Cloud city had cool ideas with the rails and the hand hooks, Bespin made sense where its a floating city that'll work in the fiction.

Whatever Crusader is, its just bad. But that doesn't mean you shouldn't buy an Idris.

I'll let you know, as an expert on game development (I have 10 years experience in following game development), that this didn't slow down development one bit because it was done by artist while server munching specialists work as if nothing happens. What are the 600+ artists supposed to do if server mushing, or anything really, isn't ready yet? Twiddle their thumbs? That would be a waste of money for this exercise in mental gymnastics, please ignore that you wouldn't hire artists yet if your game doesn't work at all

At this point, I'm not sure that they're even mediocre. Like, I'd be willing to give them kudos for any cool or original design regardless of performance, but they basically took "future space stuff" from 1980s and 1990s cinema, fed it to a :crobear:, and turned the end result into 12k toothpaste tube textures. It's derivative and generic to an almost comical degree.

I mean the planet looks fine, sure. I can't tell if it's just a texture or is actually modelled from the screenshots - it might as well just be a really HQ image for all I know. But the final one where you can see the floating city just highlights how bad it looks, holy poo poo. It would honestly be better if it didn't render until you're close. It doesn't even make sense for it to be visible, it should be covered by the clouds!

Rotten Red Rod

Also once again they've spent thousands of hours and millions of dollars on an area that only exists for pretty screenshots and will likely never have any sort of gameplay reason to hang around there. After the current rush of citizens gushing about how they want to live there I predict you'll barely ever see Orison again.

That dude is certainly capable of empathy, he just can't read other people. So if children cartoon characters with their easy to read expressions designed for literal toddlers can help people like him learn that sort of stuff then that's actually cool. If it takes a cartoon with a huge snarl and flames in its blood-soaked eyeballs yelling "I'm loving angry!" for someone (that is not the children target audience) to realize that you can actually read the emotion then that's worth something.

I actually think it looks pretty decent, especially for Star Citizen. I mean, certainly it's good enough to have in a game if it's a good game. And looks better than plenty of other games.

The main issue for me is that the game doesn't exist and will never exist in the way it's been promised. At the end of the day they have a largely copy-pasted cloud city in which there is nothing to do but look at things. And it doesn't look good enough for THAT to seem attractive.

The biggest questions in this whole saga (for me) are 1) Will the game release and 2) What state will the game be in upon release. I'm really interested to see the answers to those questions.

It looks fine enough, but the point is that citizens are treating it (and every other place in SC) like it's the second coming of video game graphics, when there's dozens of games in the last few years that look much, much better (both in terms of fidelity and art direction). Horizon: Zero Dawn has breathtakingly better skies, for instance, and this is from 2015.

The citizens will point out that SC's graphics are better because it's all really there instead of being faked with tons of places you can't go, but... Ok? So? Can you DO anything in those places? Does doing it this way accomplish anything other than killing the game's framerate and delay its production eternally? What is the point of any of this pretty scenery if you're going to look at it once, go "neat!", and then never meaningfully interact with it again (until the inevitable refactoring years down the line when it no longer looks even passable and things have started breaking due to neglect, still with no release in sight)?

In conclusion, buy an Idris.

i legitimately don't think it looks good

Rotten Red Rod

I think parts of it look alright. The clouds are ok, not mindblowing or anything. The city does look somewhat impressive from certain angles, when you're walking on it. But zoom out to where you can see all of it and the design looks weird (what's with all those long connecting pieces? They look like poo poo, and why is everything so spread out like that?) and the lighting/fog effects on the buildings look totally off, like an N64 game or something.

The version of this I'd like to see is a much more densely packed city in the clouds, with clouds moving through and interacting with the buildings themselves. But there seems to be a total lack of art direction other than "make a sterile future city with white plasticky buildings and a bunch of plants and corporate art" (that Mirror's Edge did way better years ago). It looks like a tech company built a campus, not a future utopia paradise in the clouds.

I have slowly caught up on this thread over months which has been fun. Thank you for all the great animal gifs and pics.

So I backed the original Kickstarter and it was the first and last Kickstarter I ever did, but I figured it was probably time to check out my investment some months ago. It really can’t be stated just how totally broken the game is. I’m pretty experienced with janky games and arcane UIs and things but I couldn’t find my ship for half an hour (when I wasn’t clipping through the planet and dying - not doing anything except running through areas.) I have been pressing another friend who did the Kickstarter to play it just so he too can experience how totally useless and broken the game is. That is unless you want to eat hot dogs. I ate so many hot dogs. There’s so many food stalls.

But that’s all old news, everyone’s hashed that. What bugs me and what I don’t see as much chatter about is just the use of space. I was on the Apple planet - I don’t know what it’s called, the one that looks like an Apple store everywhere - and just the sheer scale of everything felt like being in the main halls between the train station and the terminals of JFK. Everything was huge. Everything was too open. And for what purpose? I know it’s almost pointless to ask “why” and poke about FIDELITY right now but it’s so insane because it both looks lovely and isn’t realistically designed - why would you make every plaza so massive, why does everything look like Times Square even if it’s clearly just some random street? It was so jarring how massive and empty everything was - I guess all built for the millions of players eventually ready to populate the world.

The new floating city has the same drat problem and it’s mind boggling. It doesn’t look good as a creative choice to build it huge and sprawling with little spindly bits that seem to go out kilometers because ???. So is it designed that way for some Fidelitous reason? I can’t think of any! If I were building a floating city I’d probably build a fairly tight building that was symmetric for ease of keeping it floating.

I know the answer is probably that there isn’t really any design philosophy but then why don’t they have smaller designs that are easier to design and implement? Whaaat is going onnnnn?? Do they just need the cities look bigger so your Idris doesn’t dwarf them?
