Joke wasn't for you, bro.

Funniest part of the drat episode.

What? I literally provided alternative jokes that make the men look worse for their sexism. And, I'm actually a little proud of the "wandering uterus" one because it references a particularly sexist aspect to the beginnings of psychoanalysis in a way that parallels how the monster sperm were tearing through the planet, wrecking havoc. It would've been a supremely sexist thing to say that hearkens back to an extremely sexist time when even the nascent science of psychology was all but hopelessly riddled with codified, and absurd, sexism.

Bust Rodd posted:

If a 60 year old woman still thinks this very rote joke about sexism is funny, maybe she knows a little more about sexism and comedy than you do?

She definitely knows more about sexism. Comedy? Maybe, maybe not; she may not be into comedy as much as I am. But what we think is funny is at least a little different.

Eiba posted:

Lol, no, I'm saying the joke was good actually. The fact that it's accurately calling out a bad thing made me laugh. But thanks for the essay arguing that a joke that did not make you laugh was Objectively Bad.

I'm still amused it was the only joke that fell flat to get this treatment, in what was by consensus a pretty mediocre episode.

I'm not saying it's objectively bad. Humor is subjective. But, you suggested that I thought it was bad because I didn't seem to think sexism was a thing anymore. I called you out on that, quoted and explained my posts further to demonstrate that your take on my motivation was at best patently wrong (and more likely in bad faith), and that better jokes about sexism were right there for the making.

If you liked the joke, your taste in humor is just a little different than mine. Diff'rent strokes and all that.

Phylodox posted:

I really don't know how you can argue about the timeliness of jokes in an episode that dropped Nancy Reagan and Amazing Jonathan gags.

Like, I almost feel like it was part of some bigger meta-joke that didn't land.

I only commented on the joke that, to me, felt remarkably lazy. The Nancy Reagan thing actually landed for me because I'm old (Guy A. Person's post above is in line with how I interpreted the joke), and the Amazing Jonathan thing flew right the gently caress over my head. Seriously, I think I actually asked my wife, "Are we supposed to know who that is?"

As for why I'm criticizing this joke instead of every other dumb thing in this dumb episode? Well for one, I didn't realize I had to criticize everything if I wanted to criticize one thing. Honestly, as I watched this episode, I kept hoping that it could be turned around, and all of the crazy stuff would have a big payoff at the end. So, as I watched, I didn't care so much about the stuff that wasn't going anywhere interesting, because I assumed it'd go somewhere. When it didn't, my reaction to the episode was, "meh."

But the Glad I Thought Of It routine felt extra-lazy, especially since the building blocks for much better sexism jokes were right in front of them. On the other hand, the Blazen death was pretty good. That part surprised me. I didn't see it coming, and I laughed. Out loud, even.

Like I said, if you liked the joke? Diff'rent strokes. (Which, unless I'm mistaken, is a show Nancy Reagan once appeared on.) ((Probably to tell people not to do drugs.))

Yeah I did, I couldn’t really find a good site. But I didn’t really look that hard.

I got the whole season on YouTube but there was some weird glitch where they didn’t upload it. It’s weird. I ended up watching it though. I hope next week they don’t do it again. Even if the episode might be bad.

I’ll watch it. And if it’s bad I’ll move on.

Individual episodes can be up their own rear end. Individual episodes can sell out. Lowest common denominator.

Stop dismissing people not liking something. Maybe it'll get better. It should - they've been pretty consistent. gently caress.

I’m not dismissing anything, this thread is just going through the exact same cycle as every animated comedy thread does after season 1. Goons toss out these meaningless meme critiques, like “up its own rear end” because a new episode of one of the most popular shows on Earth wasn’t for you, specifically. Some Rick & Morty fans thinks that they are THE Rick & Morty fan, and the show is really for them, and many of them post here.

I miss the old days when this kind of stuff really was more self-contained.

Critic: "I didn't like this."
Fan: "Well, you didn't give it a chance. Watch the whole thing."
Critic: "I couldn't make it through, it was so bad."
Fan: "Then why were you watching it?!"

I'm not throwing in the towel on the show at this point. Rick and Morty has been on for more than a couple of seasons, and like all shows, sooner or later, I'm going to watch a bad episode, or a "meh" episode, or one that looks like it was slapped together with the minimal effort required to just barely fulfill a contractual obligation. It's going to happen. It happens with all shows. They can't all be winners. Doesn't mean the show is bad overall, or from that point forward.

Now, this Voltron one people seem to be talking about? ... I can't wait to see it. I haven't seen a funny take on Voltron since "Ventronic" took on The Monarch's cocoon in "The Lepidopterists."

Maybe one of the goons on the show is allowed to speak to it, but I imagine it was a lot easier to shift this production to WFH than many businesses. Most of the work that they do can probably be done better, from home, and without the face-to-face they can do selections and feedback over Zoom...which is what I imagine happened to the writer's room.

Most of the actual animation is probably still done overseas: no idea what that looks like post-Covid. I wonder if animated productions will go back to office work or stay remote and save a little money on rent.

This is one of those weird things that i love to share, but the main reason that incest porn became so popular in the last 7-8 years is because a really sleazy media mogul pulled a Microsoft and hoovered up dozens of smaller porn production studios all over the US and basically forced all of them to switch over to incest porn because that's what the guy was really into. If you look up the umbrella production studio that owns all of those "Step-Sis & Me!", "Family TherapyXOXOX" companies, it's all the same guy.

Just another one of the myriad ways in which billionaires have immeasurable impacts on culture and society behind the scenes.

The same thing happenned with big 70's bush in porn, it's not that huge unkempt bush was sexy or stylish, it's because the mafia dons who were funding the films wanted huge 70's bush

I say this with the utmost sincerity and respect: I would listen/watch to a podcast/YouTube series just about these random facts about porn and sex work you know a lot about.

Not really goofy verbal tics are often used in Japanese as part of characterization. You just don't notice it as much because subtitles tend to ignore them. I agree that joke just doesn't work in the R+M episode at all though.

Serious question: what if you’re just hairy in general? Do you just shave everything off (having that area be devoid of hair as opposed to everywhere else seems odd)?

LionArchers response there is pretty loving stupid IMO. It's not "lol" or anything - almost borderline sexist. Women don't have to conform to any beauty standards and shaving has been forced on them for many years with people like LionArcher calling them disgusting for having natural hair on their arms, armpits, vaginas, legs, etc. They can choose to shave or not. It's up to them. Even guys. Don't loving "lol" at them or pull some loving cover of "well climate change" gently caress off.

The Amazing Johnathan bit is baffling. I guess someone in the writers' room is just a huge fan? He doesn't really do any of his usual crazy stuff, he just makes an "is this your card?" joke that would've worked with any magician.

I had to double check if they actually got him to do a voice because it was such a nothing joke. I've noticed they get a lot of big names to do voices that wind up being not very distinct or interesting. Maybe it's just an opportunity to have some fun for the actors. Even in this episode, Christina Ricci was the horse princess.

I haven't see the Voltron episode yet, but why are we calling this a Voltron thing instead of a Power Rangers thing?

I kinda know that Voltron was a show at some point that had a Megazord type thing. But I'm closing in on 40 years old and it's still before my time. It's feeling like a Popeye thing where people tend to just know it exists more than actually having experience with it.

Voltron was all the same animal (lions in their case) and the focus was exclusively on the giant monster fighting. Power Rangers was different mech animals as well as more of a split focus between out of mech fighting before the monster grew. They also ripped the costumes with the revealed lower faces basically directly from Voltron, and Voltron was an anime and they wanted to do some riffs on that.

power rangers are an americanized version of an offshoot of the super sentai series, a subgenre of japanese children's tv which focuses on five or so costumed people who defeat bad guys with karate and have cool robots. voltron is the same kind of idea but it takes place in space, doesn't have karate, has space opera politics, and focuses more on the cool robots and how the cool robots join together to make a larger, cooler robot. so power rangers is more of a karate punch show and voltron puts more focus on the robots and spaceships

the rick and morty episode is sort of a soft pastiche of anime tropes involving big robots combining, and in the west people often use the term 'voltron' to describe a characteristic of anime shows which have big fighting robots that combine to form a larger, fightier robot. the kaiju involvement is more super sentai but again, its a soft pastiche. probably the main difference is that all the various shows like power rangers are explicitly live action where the big robot genre of anime is explicitly animated. the voltron references are five of the same kind of animal making a big animal, a big laser sword, and an elaborate suiting up sequence involving tubes and machines. in super sentai style shows the robots just sort of appear and the rangers just warp right into the cockpit so they can get back to the karate fighting

e: just as an example of how direct the reference is
