I only really learned that's even a thing because my conservative uncle, in between whining about the government, was talking about how he strong-armed his boss by saying that if he wasn't going to get paid for the full amount of his accrued PTO (which was something like ten months worth because he barely took time off and it rolled over with no limits for like 40 years) he was just going to take off every single day until he retired. Dude has an effective union and a government job (he was a gym teacher lmao), votes straight-ticket republican.

e: To his credit(?), he's very much a principled traditional fiscal conservative, didn't vote for trump, and trump getting elected made him reconsider a lot of poo poo since the republicans pretty much completely dropped any pretense of ~principled Reaganomics~ or whatever, so that's... some kind of personal growth I guess?

I recently had a conversation with my WASP grandma where I offhandedly mentioned that "the older I get, the more I can understand people finding loopholes/scamming to get ahead." She looked as taken back by this sentiment as someone claiming Jesus Christ should blow them.

This then lead me to some simple hypotheticals like "if you knew there was zero chance of getting caught, absolutely no repercussions, would you steal $10,000 from a place like Wells Fargo?" She was adamant that she would not. I insisted that with no chance of punishment, and how much wealth a bank like that has, literally nothing would change except that she had more money to buy poo poo/pay bills with. "You're stealing money from the people who bank there!" No grandma, that's not how it works.

I finally boiled it down to the simple philosophical question of "would you steal food to feed your starving family?" The response I got was "there's always another way."

Completely and irrecoverably cucked by capitalism. To the point of hesitation when it comes to stealing negligible amounts of wealth in order to not die yourself.

I have colleague that's been on maternity leave for like 2+ years, because she had two kids one right after the other. No one batted an eye, she's already been several years with the company, it's normal. I have another one that left for maternity leave like 6 months after joining as well, nbd.

I don't know if that's better or worse than this one grew-up-rich dude I know through common acquaintances, who when presented with similar "what would you do if you had no money and were faced with homelessness / not having food" went straight to taking it from other people by force or coercion. Like he could barely even conceive of being homeless, and was convinced that he would do absolutely anything to avoid it because his life was the only one that truly matters in that kind of situation.

Weird that people like that only ever think to take it by force from random other people and not, idk, banks. Probably just a coincidence.

The common acquaintance in this case was someone who'd actually been homeless for several months and called him a disgusting gently caress so that was fun. I don't really get why they're still friends, like from what I've seen he uses her as a weird guilt sponge, like it's okay he has a bunch of money and works in venture capital (or something like that I don't remember) because he has A Poor Friend. At least she calls out his bullshit I guess.

The wording in Teams is set up for this sort of thing as well. If someone is flagged as out of office Teams will show a notification in chat that "<employee> is out of the office and may not respond to messages."

My thinking is, what do you mean may not respond? The standard should be that they won't respond at all!

you have to submit to a Meyers Briggs personality test to be considered for hiring, and in the test they explicitly ask you how you feel about a fellow employee stealing a stapler from the place that has yet to hire you or give you any money.
your answer must involve notifying law enforcement and management, or you will not be considered for the position, and will receive no notification that your application and relevant experience is no longer valid.

I can only imagine the robotic response that would have came back (no reply at all was typical). I quit about a month ago and am working for myself now. HR's job in that company could be done with some auto email replies and a monthly newsletter. Typical arrangement where everything said to HR is sent to ownership and then used against you to justify a lack of raises.

Questioning their covid response and lack of proper anti-covid equipment got me on a "performance improvement plan".
