Resistance 3 sucks in that i really liked the first two and had high hopes for 3 and they were dashed because 3 is the most creatively bankrupt and dull of them. it's Cormac McCarthy's The Road The Movie The Game. And I mean that in the most insultingly derivative way possible. it goes beyond homage and just wholesale lifts gameplay and plot elements from other mediums without ever figuring out how to make them work together.

There's an entire not-Ravenholm area with a not-Father Grigori and it is super dull. it never gets what made Ravenholm a fascinating experience. and they staple it to the Half Life 2 Epsiode 2 antlion boss fight who you kill in a scripted sequence meant to resemble the ending of Jaws.

and they do the whole fight a helicopter on a bridge segment from HL2 but again without the fun. R3 is a slow methodical game. it lacks the kinetic movement of HL2. also this section feels remarkably like the White Forest but without a car so thats a bummer.

there are two levels that are on-rails shooting platforms. one on a boat and one on a train. they are fine once but overstay their welcome on every subsequent playthrough.

then the cannibals from The Road show up and the bad guy pulls a "we're the same you and I" bullshit thing. so you get thrown into the Resistance version of the Thunderdome with a sledgehammer and break free to work your way through a Fallout 3 dungeon.

the best levels of the game are the last ones because it returns you to the weird pulp scifi aesthetic of the first two games while finally letting you go hog wild with the arcadey weapons.

and speaking of weapons, Insomniac really poo poo the bed with R3. nearly ever weapon is a returning one from previous games. only three are new... one is the Cryogun from Ratchet Clank, one is the GES Biorifle from Unreal, and one is a sledgehammer. not even a sledgehammer with a rocket booster or a laser sight or anything... just a sledgehammer. what happened to the creativity?

If any of this sounds fun, do not be deceived. the game is exceptionally workmanlike and dull. it's fine. it's standard console FPS fare. when it's done you'll forget it and move one because R3 is forgettable. i wish it couldve been a beautiful disaster because it sucked to end the trilogy on such a whimper.

oh also they ruined the paper thin characterization of Capelli to make him a PS3 era Sad Dad protagonist because we needed more of those apparently.

The types that grind their party to level 99 on disc 1, who spend 5 hours pre-gaming their Elder Scrolls character so they can have max-stats right out of the tutorial or w/e. There's also probably a lot of :words: to be spilled on the curious dichotomy of "getting all of my characters to level 99 early using every last trick, exploit, glitch, and optimization is just good system mastery" and "use a gameshark to set your party to level 99 instantly? HOW DARE YOU, THAT'S CHEATING". And I wonder how many people eschew just...setting a game to easy because that's for dumb idiot babies only and doesn't stroke your ego. Breaking the game and turning it into a defacto easy mode is for galaxy brained real gamers. Gotta shows those devs who's boss. :smug:

Yeah, too many RPGs are made completely trivial if you know the One Weird Trick. It could even be just an action RPG that lets you carry hundreds of potions and heal in the pause menu with no cooldown. The only thing that poses a threat is an attack that kills you in one hit. So many games do it, like Dragon’s Dogma, Breath of the Wild, FFXV and Bethesda’s games, because it means you can win any battle through attrition.

I think Square Enix is one of my favourite developers because some of their teams actually know how to make good action RPGs. I loved KHII FM, KHIII Remind and FFVIIR, and I’m really looking forward to Neo TWEWY, FFXVI, Strangers of Paradise and the rest of the FFVIIR games. Also, in KH each character can only bring a limited number of items into battle and FFVIIR needs you to spend an ATB gauge to use an item so they’re not completely broken.

From Software and Team Ninja are great too, but I don’t want every game to follow the Souls formula. The Data Org XIII battles would be a nightmare if you couldn’t restart them immediately after you died or had to grind for health items.

But yeah it's easy enough to have fun playing with your friends even in a terrible game that you all know is terrible, as long as it's not terrible in an actively frustrating way.

The brigador team 'fired' him when all that came to light, then they kind of just hush-hush brought him back in just recently for the latest expansion or whatever it is (he's the other main dev's brother afaik).

But death of the author is a thing, you don't have to feel bad about not uninstalling the game or whatever... just don't give your money to its devs anymore.

Wellp, I was looking forward to that expansion. Shan't be buying.

Also, Half-Life 2 is only fun these days if you mod it. Something like SMOD that adds shitloads of enemies to the maps and peppers them with ridiculous weapons from various other games makes it great again.

Both the Wolfenstien reboot games suck, and while I respect the power move of exploiting the hell out of irl out and proud Nazis for maximum marketability, review scores and sales, TNC was a badly designed pile of poo poo and TNO wasn't much better. People saying it it was a "return to form" for shooters was the dumbest poo poo. They are bog standard shooters from the Xbox 360 era that I guess are supposed to feel "old school" by making ammo annoying to pick up off the ground and occasionally designing vaguely arena-like encounters (around level design that isn't even remotely arena like). Both of them are a showcase of bad level design, bad encounter design, bad storytelling and good marketing. They were both borderline painful to play though even though the shooting mechanics rock.

Not a Dickman, just a shape
Yakuza 0

This got hyped up to me beyond belief

And I'm left thinking is this it?

Average combat that manages to feel to slow and too fast at the same time. Blocking feels useless due to it being directional and wind up animation just taking ages that enemies are able to get a cancelling jab in. I've looked up videos of "high level" combat and it never looks or feels like a combo, there isn't any fluidity or slickness and nothing beats three button combos from just one combat style. And anything beyond that is ineffective or poorly conveyed

So many side activities that are poorly explained. I tried to play baccarat and just got given 5-7 pages of text? Good job tutorialising. I'm complaining somewhat about the quantity of the side activities, but if it had a decent tutorial on them I wouldn't mind so much. I play one round of telephone club , or baseball or Japanese solitaire and I'm just lost and don't wanna continue with it. Pocket car racing seems fun but I went through the tutorial and have no idea about it, If these side activities actually explained I might enjoy them more, which is annoying because it seems like I need to master real estate Royale and hostess clubbing to fully upgrade my characters as everyone tells me it gets better when you fully upgrade the combat. also only one Sega Game in a Sega arcade? Jesus, GTA SA did this better

The camp is great but really inconsistent. The initial characterising of mijima and kiryu is rad as hell. And I like the idea of big campy 80s japanaventure . But it just whiplashes between. Super somber and just , kinda goofy , rather than any sort of humorous exaggeration , every time I hear a synth chime or walkin round acoustic slap guitar it just kills any momentum I had from what is a kinda neat idea for a story Majima's super polite host cum badass ex Yakuza is cool but it is under cut by almost all the dialogue he has

"Wow, kuze just chopped off his finger in contrition"
...
...
"And I'm not having to memorise cult lingo to break out a softcore pornstar from a cult....and this end with a spammed three button combo fight"

There is something really cool here, city block scale 80s Yakuza with endless side shenanigans seems like a slam dunk but I'm just bored. It's keeping my attention by
the world just being nice to look at and the business management side quests directly incentivising engaging with the world in a fun way

There is nothing done amazingly well with the Yakuza games, Zero is pretty humorous but apparently they dropped that for the rest of the series, the fighting feels poo poo, the city is quite detailed and nice to walk around, the plot is so-so, I bet if you took the exact same game and set it in a non asian country and named the main character Kevin instead of Kiryru, all the weebs who seem to obsess over every game wouldn't give a poo poo anymore.

It is amusing how much it annoys Yakuza fans when you say your happy to run through them in 20 hours rather than devoting an extra 100 to a bunch of mini games and weird side stories though. I once had a dude in the Yakuza thread come out with some "oh but did you see side stories 47, 94 and 112" or some poo poo and of course predictably they were the ones involving people stealing ladies underwear or dressing up as a giant baby.

Yakuza fans are weird.
