lol just read that the senate passed a bill unanimously that bans ALL products imported that had any part of the supply chain in xinjiang. this is 100% about preventing the region from becoming productive to better foment strife, same thing they are doing with cuba

I know america is still the biggest customer on the block but China has been diversifying its exports especially to places like Russia which can’t really be bullied into falling in line on this. I know it’ll cause trouble for a bunch of companies who have to switch up their sourcing but I don’t think it would prevent industrialization in Xinjiang, just slow it down a little

Honestly I feel the EU has actually gotten worse on this. The population is distracted so the pols are free to shamelessly pander to the Americans.

China could always try eating Xinjiang products domestically, but I'm not sure exactly how viable that is.

They already sanction Xinjiang cotton, which probably account for half of the Xinjiang export. It shouldn't be that hard to redirect Xinjiang products to other parts of the world. But I wonder what China will do to counter the sanction in the upcoming trade negociation. This is basically the continuation of the HK official sanction/counter sanction from last year. Maybe US will move onto Tibet products next year.

so are US companies going to send people to Xinjiang to make sure? Are they going to just hire Intertek or SGS to validate poo poo? this is nonsense. Would be funny if china demanded people come to xinjiang for audits.

It will be like all other supply chain laws where you go down a level and ask if any suppliers are doing unethical stuff and they'll answer "no, the child labor is done by our sub-sub-sub-contractor". Then everyone nods and smiles, having down their required inquiry.

I wouldn't expect China to do that as a serious economic measure, but a political one.
