We laugh but there's some gigantic boomer in a tiny hat somewhere in Cape May, NJ looking for the perfect bass for his Beach Boys (Mike Love era) tribute band right now who will happily pay that price.

That probably very well made, decent sounding hunk of poo poo has been on and off in my “targeted” Guitar Center ads for over a year. I’d guess they bought it at NAMM in January 2020 and all of the target market is either dead now or can’t afford it because their retirement ate it the beginning of lockdown and they panicked and moved everything after it lost all its value. It was on sale for like $1400 off a month or so ago.

You’re absolutely right that some ding dong will finally see it and fall in love with their vision of having John Stamos drum for them.

I say “targeted” because GC/MF *has to* know I’m a stingray guy, and yet they’re pretty sure someday I’m going to bite on that.

Today I got a double lesson in the following subjects:

1. Why you shouldn't inadvertently run an amp at 240V when it's set for 110, even just for a second.
2. What's inside a capacitor.

Our tech said it was the most catastrophic total component failure he had seen in twenty years of working on amps, but amazingly both the fuses and transformers survived so just needed a replacement cap soldering in and a shitload of scrubbing with a toothbrush to remove the debris before it was up and running again. Nobody will ever notice. :ninja:

Fuuuuuck that's so scary yet so awesome. Was it just accidentally putting the power on 240 when doing QA or was this something from a customer who brought it in?

Also, I do engineering stuff, would you mind if I showed my interns this picture?

It's a Hiwatt Custom 20 and embarrassingly the lucky someone was me. All the models around the warehouse SHOULD be set to 240V default from burn-in, but you still gotta do those checks just in case... Got sloppy, forgot to look once, and BANG: magic smoke time.

The other guys said everyone gets one at some point, just usually it's something silly like breaking off a pin in a tube socket and not potentially delaminating a transformer. Benched and tested it for an hour with no issues so I can unclench my butt I think.

Yeah, just keep the company name out pls thanks. Not a good look! It's a backline and I was testing it on our 240 mains but didn't check the voltage selector before going hot - can't think why it would be set to 110 but end result was the unit smelt like Satan's rear end in a top hat all day.

That's so annoying, can't we just pick one or the other? Like amps or volts, do we really need both?

Also I bet that amp smells like coming home to home cooking after a long day at work. But your house is on fire and it's your partner that is cooking.

Poor amp :( Frying an amp is one of my biggest fears.

I work in the Hiwatt UK custom shop so my pics are mostly of the obvious, but I've occasionally posted shots of interesting or rare models in the main Guitar thread.

My favourite is still this one-off DR504 in white and chrome, included completely chromed chassis and transformers.

Thanks and will do. It's not gonna be in a formal class setting or even in an email, just going to show them the picture on my phone and say 'this is why we double check things a million times, as even trained professionals get a goof up once in a while'

It's a cool picture that I'm also hoping to use as a lesson to not fear loving up

The head engineer who opened it up made me take a photo of him holding it up like a prizeweight fish for much the same reason. He was impressed he actually took it round the workshop in that state to interrupt everyone else and show them.

The green circle is where the errant cap once was (well, the legs are still soldered in...). If you look carefully at the bottom preamp board there is another resistor leading to the valve bases (in orange) that is supposed to be parallel to the board. We think that got in the way of the cap shell taking off and took most of the force so got bent at right angles.

Ahahaha that fuckin rules.

In undergrad circuits lab we took apart a can capacitor like that because my lab-mate and I got bored. The TA caught us doing it and thought it was cool and let us keep going as he'd never actually seen the insides.

I had a weird 'tik tik tik tik' sound appear at one of my bands' rehearsal place intermittently and it appeared to differ in volume based on where I was standing and which way my bass was facing. When it also appeared at my other band's rehearsal place with entirely different signal chain and, hell, different part of town I realized it was the heart rate sensor belt I was wearing that caused it.

Ok that's probably the oddest source of noise I've ever heard about.

I have accidentally left my phone in a recording booth and when I was looking at brainwaves I saw a weird blip that I couldn't figure out where it was coming from. I thought "oh well just gonna be one of those days, ok let me put on a new album to listen to aaaaand where's my phone? Oooooohhhhh"

Other fun noise sources have been: fire alarm, a bulldozer, and HVAC systems
