Cuba is going through a downturn in tourism and spike in COVID cases and is really feeling the pinch from the US embargo, which, among other things, is hurting the government's ability to import medical supplies. For context the 60 year old Cuban Embargo, enforced by the US, leverages a poo poo ton of penalties on any ship that docks in a Cuban port, such as that ship cannot dock at an American port for six months and anyone who services that ship, or deals with that ship's owner, also faces penalties. The UN has voted almost unanimously to end the blockade every year for like a decade, but the US (and Israel, lol) keeps voting no, and the US is on the Security Council so nothing will ever happen there. The government has tried to adapt by waiving import duties on supplies brought in by individuals and encouraging 'visitors' to bring in as much poo poo as they can stuff in a suitcase, but its not a real solution. Anyways, Cubans have been dealing with shortages of everything for decades now and its just a thing. But the current shortages are getting dire and the Cuban people are grumbling. Grumbling does not, however, mean the Cubans want *anything* to do with the US or US-adjacent forces. Cubans understand that no matter what their feelings towards the regime (mostly positive) the US is the ultimate cause of the shortages, and that the US would gladly pillage their country given the slightest excuse.

The US, however, is seizing on the grumbles and (small) demonstrations to fire up the machinery of imperialism. The US cannot stand to see a successful country outside of their sphere of control, much less an openly communist one, much less 90 miles off shore. This is compounded by gusanos, exiled Cubans and largely right wing assholes who fled communism to the States, leveraging identity politics to speak on behalf of a country most of them are several generations removed from. They like to pretend they're the *true* voice of Cuba, and everyone else is being controlled by the evil commies. Many gusanos were rich and powerful before the revolution, either thanks to imperial holdings from Spain, or favor from American corporations under pre-revolution puppet governments, so they've got a vested interest in US imperialism so they can reclaim grandma's tobacco plantation.

Cuba lives in the shadow of the US and has had to deal with an endless barrage of propaganda for decades, so the Cuban government has been hesitant to allow free access to the internet, but its been liberalizing over the past few years. They got a little jumpy over how hard the US seized on the discontent though and did some minor crackdowns, although nothing compared to basically any American city last summer. Now they're doing massive counter protests to demonstrate the loyalty of the people.

This would all be over if the US would end the embargo and let Cuba resolve its own issues, but thats never going to happen because it would make the US feel bad. So here we are, looking at a completely fabricated 'revolution' cheered on by right wing assholes and credulous morons who are just making up stories whole cloth to smear the dirty commies, wondering exactly how far the US is going to take this farce.

The Cuban government deliberately prioritized three groups for emigration during the 1980 Mariel boatlift, seeking to rid the country of 'undesirable' elements and de-estabilize the Miami exile community at the same time:
1) hardened criminals
2) dissidents
3) feet pic guys
