Belgium is not a net contributor, and has almost never been a net contributor to the EU. Similarly to Luxembourg, the reason for that is the running expenses of EU’s bureaucratic apparatus. It’s a perfectly valid EU budget line item, with no coherent reason to pretend that it should be excluded from this consideration.

quote:

Poland’s right-wing nationalist ruling party, Law and Justice, has been steadily losing ground in recent months. Its parliamentary majority has dwindled to one seat amid rising public discontent over its handling of the coronavirus pandemic and passage of new restrictions on abortion. Following the return to domestic politics of former prime minister and European Council president Donald Tusk, polls are showing his opposition Civic Platform party could defeat Law and Justice in the next election, which is due by 2023 but could come earlier.

It should be no surprise, then, that Law and Justice is reviving an effort to neuter the country’s highest-rated news station, TVN24, which unlike state-owned channels broadcasts independent news and critical commentary about the government. This week the head of the state broadcast regulator, a former Law and Justice member, told Reuters that the station was in violation of foreign ownership rules, and that its license might not be renewed by a Sept. 26 deadline. Meanwhile, the party’s legislators were pushing a new rule that would tighten the regulations further; a sponsor said the aim was to force a sale to a Polish state company. That is the strategy Poland and the like-minded government of Hungary have been using to silence critical media; last year the Polish state oil refinery bought a chain of regional newspapers from a Germany company, ending their independence.

Law and Justice’s leader, Jaroslaw Kaczynski, has said “media in Poland should be Polish”; his acolytes say they are trying to protect against Polish news organizations falling into the hands of Russia or China. But TVN, which operates more than a dozen channels in Poland, is owned not by an authoritarian government but by Discovery, a private U.S. company. Though often at odds with the European Union, Law and Justice portrayed the United States as Poland’s most important ally during the administration of President Donald Trump and lobbied for a permanent U.S. military base in the country. Now the government seems to be waging what some Poles are describing as a “Cold War” against the Biden administration: In addition to the move against TVN, the foreign ministry is reportedly resisting the White House’s nominee for ambassador to Poland, Mark Brzezinski.

Discovery owns TVN through a subsidiary in the Netherlands, which should allow it to meet a legal test allowing majority foreign ownership of media by companies based in the European Union. It has had no trouble renewing the licenses of several of its other non-news Polish channels. So it could hardly be more clear what the government’s motive is in tightening the law. In case there were any doubt, Law and Justice deputy Marek Suski said it out loud on July 11.: a sale to “Polish businessmen,” he predicted, would give the government “some influence” over TVN.

The Biden administration has taken note of what would be a devastating blow to media freedom in Poland. The U.S. charge d’affaires in Warsaw and the State Department’s spokesman have tweeted their concerns. “Strong democracies welcome a free and independent press,” said State’s Ned Price. That’s just the problem: Under Law and Justice, Poland’s democracy has become progressively weaker. The United States must use all the leverage it can muster to ensure that independent television news in the country survives.

That sucks.

When I read about this in Ukrainian news a few days ago, my understanding was that they were squatting a (possibly abandoned) facility of a regional electricity company, not just stealing the electricity from the regional grid, but also doing something to mask their consumption traces. Factual occupation of this processing farm is irrelevant to the law enforcement action.

It’s likely easy to overestimate the quality of their infrastructure surveillance, but I would not at all be surprised if it turns out some energy company insider helped them with at least mopping up the footprints.

As I look towards western Europe with its low crime rate, healthy and happy populations, a modern economy, functioning infrastructure, low curruption and stable political systems, I am filled with dread and despair. If only we could be more like our Russian slavic brothers. Yes, Russia is an oppressive country full of misery and despair, high crime rate, a hyper corrupt state and decaying economy. And sure, life is short and alcoholism is rampant. But there are so few gay people. And that's all that matters in the end

Neat. Iilya and Aleksi made SA.com. Good for them.

Since we're not talking about weird stuff, some color on the SBU crackdown on crypto; the crypto schemes and casinos were under the protection of Interior Ministry. With Avakov likely moving up to deputy PM, depending on how the White House trip goes the schemes are being raided for resale. Kolomoskyi and Firtash (of course) were the two major players in local crypto through the use of the illegal electricity schemes. IMF is terrified that if Ukraine legalizes crypto the flight to offshore havens would collapse the UAH;USD peg, which is only being held up by UkrEXIM and Citibank corporate demand.

Also, on a more sunny topic we expect NBU Governor Krill to be sacked sometime in August or September, kicking off a crisis. IMF is desperate to save their program and prevent Ukraine going full Argentina, so expect US$2.5b to be issued before October.

It will end up like his immigration referendum in 2016. Overwhelming rejection of whatever is current Orbán's boogeyman by his voters, referendum still not valid because it will be below 50% turnout, but Orbán will be able to tell his story that he's totally not dictator, because 'people democratically decided in referendum' etc.

Obviously the wording is whack. Don't think the results would change much if they were to word it in an impartial manner. Potentially it might skew the results more towards xenophobia due to people seeing the impartial wording and thinking "gender ideology" promoters are trying to force "it" via the referendum.

Well, that's the entire play. Younger people are aware of this topic but don't vote. Older people are much more likely to be unaware or radically conservative. Therefore, this will look like a referendum on Hungary's right to defend itself to them. The second question, for instance, is functionally identical to the fifth, and only exists explicitly as an attempt to validate a mindset which considers trans people to be defects, rather than people, with some external enemy actively attempting to eradicate Hungarian children via SRS.

I think the 4th there is used to try to trick people to vote against drug use or gambling or similar and parade that as a vote on LGBT themes, but you’re not wrong on where the textualist interpretation of that can be taken.

I dunno if the translation is accurate, but this looks similar to the Russian laws prohibiting promotion of gay sex. Like yeah I don't think sex change operations should be PROMOTED to children, they're pretty dumb after all.
