IIRC Mass Effect 1 got grief when it came out because there was no "properly white" skin tone, "the closest you can get is vaguely middle eastern"

Imma go the opposite direction and claim that "just making yourself" is perfectly valid. Wanting the character to be you, who is experiencing the setting the creators laid out for you, is the easiest way to get into a unfamiliar setting. Still lol at the guys who were whinging about not having a skin white enough. Sorry dude, the technology for translucent skin is still a ways off for a create- a-character.

You could go the other way like WoW did when it updated character models and just do away with all the black characters. Just wake up one day and there are no black characters in Azeroth.

95% of the time I'll just play as the default character, which often is a 'boring generic white guy' . Sometimes if I'm feeling REALLY adventurous, ill hit random a few times and go with that. Often this also just results in a 'boring generic white guy' .

saints row is one of the few franchises where I can play myself, as most games don't let you be fat. but I can also play lots of other types of people, so hell yeah multiple playthroughs.

I have the problem where I obsessively toy with the sliders and keep having to start over because the lighting in chargen doesn't match what I'll be seeing in-game, or I accidentally hosed up the neck, or I hate how the hairstyle clips through the ears or whatever. Saints Row is good because I can just go the store and change it in-game at any time for any reason, but I spent more time on the Mass Effect 2 intro than I probably spent on the rest of the game.

This was much less of a problem by even the time of Mass Effect, but in older games, I was always weary of having a more specialized character. It’s great to be a stealth archer, till the game puts you on an escort mission or throws you into an area and you have no choice but to engage head‐on. The soldier type may be boring, but no game has ever punished a player for choosing it.
