We had a bunch of cat thefts at work just before the pandemic started. They were rolling round our car parks, jacking certain ones up and just sawing the cats out.

They caught the guy when he was stupid enough to post an ad like that on Facebook marketplace. It seemed too stupid to be real but it turns out some criminals are really not smart.

Colour me ignorant, but why are they going for so much? Some rare metals at elemental level? I'm going with a hi-flow cat setup soon so getting some $$ back would be nice

Yeah, rare metals. Platinum is one of the most expensive metals in the world, and extensively used in catalytic converters.

People who work in platinum processing facilities wear coats. After work they get an air bath in a kind of air lock system, and even just the dust clinging to their coats is worth capturing in the air bath and reprocessing.
Platinum is stupidly expensive but sadly also incredibly useful.

Ah yes, I watched a video ages ago of a guy who sweeps freeways for the 'dust'. He also digs up dirt and grime from NYC sidewalks in the diamond district for profit.

I'm pretty sure that's just something you can buy aftermarket, not from the factory.

I was given a 95 F150 Ext Cab with a bad transmission and some terminal rust issues but a health 5.0 V-8 that I wanted to replace the tired million mile 302 in my 73 F-100. I cut the cat off and took it in with the radiator and a few other parts. The local Alter metal facility paid me $600 for the cat. Just incredible. I remember being happy with $75.00 in the not to distant past ffs.

The roadside dust in some areas would qualify as high‐grade platinum ore.

Sagebrush

That's true for most interstate highways, iirc.

Of course the trick is that working mines tend to process somewhat more dirt than you can sweep up off the side of the highway.

Sure you'll get some platinum from road dust but also a lot of:

Zinc
Cadium
Cobalt
Chromium
Copper
Mercury
Molybdenum
Nickle
Lead

and when I mean get I mean get in your lungs and eventually your bloodstream

I know the chat about backfire tunes was a couple of pages ago but I just caught up and had an experience in the wild last night.

I was waiting to turn right onto a busy-ish street and a slammed Audi with questionable body panel fit and fart cans drove by. I was able to turn a couple of cars later and ended up in the left turn lane at the next light. Audi was two lanes over in the right turning lane. I looked over and the late teen/early twenties driver had his window open and was looking right at me. I rolled mine down and he yells, "WANNA RACE?!" while gunning his engine. I was in my 1320 Challenger and was trying to figure out how to end the conversation as quickly as possible (even if I had wanted to race, we were turning in different directions with a lane in between us and a car in front of him). I said, "mine is fully stock though, is yours?"

He started gunning it to backfire and yelled back, "NO! CAN YOU DO THIS?!" and kept redline gunning it for the backfires. I said "nope" and the light thankfully turned green. I could hear him screaming up the street the opposite direction.

Well that's my Kids These Days story.

A long time ago when I had my stock KA24DE powered 240sx with 130k miles and multiple oil leaks a guy in an S2k asked to drag race me at a stop light. I told him "Naw!" but he kept revving at me. The light turned green and he kept revving and then got frustrated and sped away, making an abrupt right turn down a street after the stop light and clipping a curb with his back right wheel. :discourse:

(and can't post for 11 years!)

It's always great when someone is revving at you at a red light, right in front of a cop, and the cop is already staring the two of you down, knowing he's about to write some tickets, he just isn't sure who he'll be able to write more tickets to yet.

It's hilarious when you rev back and bait them into during a burnout, you take off like grandma, and the cop flies past you chasing down that Celica, laughing his rear end off and giving you a thumbs up.

Yeah yeah I know, ACAB, but this was around 2000 or 2001, and I was in a ricer Civic that got too much attention. I was more than happy to divert some of that attention to the idiot that couldn't be bothered to look in his mirror before testing his rev limiter and fart cannon.

Cops used to pull me over to look at my car and figure out what it bloody was. It was quite loving irritating as it was a tarted up Toyota Sera with un-engineered modifications and the anxiety was annoying.

EDIT for content. I put Casey here because he is going from building cool stuff to bitching about commenters instead of just doing the builds.

I roared by a cop in Tampa in my Galaxie once and the first thing he said after pulling me over was "whacha got in that thing?"
Then he did the "do you know how fast you were going?" and I immediately said "Yes I was doing 61" (it was a 55 and I was prob doing 75-80)
Got off with a warning

My brother drove a 71 Plymouth duster that a guy down the street from us had somewhat restored and modified with glass packs. It was loud as hell. He got pulled over several times by the local PD but never got a ticket. Cops just wanted to see what it was and issue a "slow down". This was the 90s in suburbia. These same cops pulled me over years later as a pizza driver and once they remembered you, they left you alone. I mean, can't ticket the drivers from the pizza joint where you get free lunch once a week.

I never got stopped by the police for anything like that but my 2001 Regal GS got a lot of confused looks by the locals when I was stationed in Sardegna.

There was a time I was in rural Sardegna (but I repeat myself) on a road trip and stopped for gas. Two mechanics came out and circled it, speaking Italian the whole time. They got to the back and one of them pointed at the badge and looked at me and said, "BOO-eeck?" I nodded and said "Buick" and they seemed pleased.

Yep. Mine was cut off my 4runner a few weeks ago. Out $300 so far and still fighting one stupid nut to get the end of the pipe off the header. They cut the upstream O2 sensor wires as well, even though they didn't cut that part off. So I have to solder those back together as well.
