Immunocompromised people don’t always have the luxury of staying home, or maybe a close relative is an idiot who refuses to get vaccinated or take precautions.

My worry is that we get a variant that the vaccines don’t protect against and there’s no political will to lock down again.

Do we really imagine that in the world where masks were considered a government plot to control the world, that we'd be able to go from "vaccines and we're starting to open up again" to "there's a new variant that vaccines don't cover shut it down" under Biden without the entire chudsphere not only refusing to obey but going on the offensive?

It could be 3x as bad as the worst it got, and they’d refuse to ever lock down again.

Once we can start hitting kids with the vaxx I expect that Covid levels will take a big dive. They're the only really big disease pool left. It'll chew through heavily red areas for a few years, but I don't expect it to ever get as bad as it did last November again.

Welp, I feel terrible. This is very E/N but I'm hoping BiggerBoat agrees this is an acceptable place to share. TL:DR is my Mom dropped a RWM talking-point in conversation and I lost control of myself for a few minutes and made her sad.

My Dad has been a lost cause since Obama got elected. When I was a kid he was a Republican who sucked the asses of the corprorate overlords who taught him that a good american man is a company man. You aren't who you think to are, you are the person the majority says you are. But on the other hand when my neighbor dropped the n-word back in something like 1978 he made sure to sit me down and explain why I was never to use that word. He wasn't all bad until Obama and that's about the time his brain broke and I learned that the words my Dad was using were put there by Fox and Rush. I guess The Daily Show did a good job of showing the day's RWM talking-points and so now I recognize them much more quickly.

Which leads to the problem. I called Mom to check in a couple hours ago. She's the sweetest person in the world, and very wise in many ways. Unfortunately, she is exposed to Dad's rhetoric all the time. Her only morning show is Fox and Friends. She loves it. As we watch democracy going down in flames exactly as it has happened before (history will teach us nothing) I've been very concerned about her. I knew she was on the side of science where COVID-19 is concerned. That was encouraging.
Well, last week there were a couple of crimes at her workplace. Someone came into her store and stole her purse from under her desk. That's really awful. Then someone cut out the catalytic converter from their delivery van. Of course this made me angry. They stole from my Mom!

But in fairness to myself, when I hear about petty crime-of-opportunity I tend to figure the perpetrator is in a serious crisis and not just looking for a thrill or to ruin anyone's life. Maybe they have a desperate drug habit. As a self-destructive drunk (still dry after six months) whose sister died of long-term (over-prescribed) opiod abuse I also tend to think if we had a working, sane policy on anything in the US crimes like these would be much more rare.

And that's why I said, "This is awful. Times are really tough, too. Everybody's hurting, more than usual."

Her immediate go-to was to launch into something about the government changing the child tax credit. I am very sad to say I just couldn't keep my composure. I recognize this as a talking-point that has been rolling around the right-wing department of grievance-stoking for a little while now. I recognize it ticks important boxes for Fox: It is a "socialism", for "people not like us" who "haven't earned it" and "I'm paying for it" so it's a stupid attack on Biden, and has the added benefit of being racist; and finally it's another thing to report on that ISN'T how Trump is guilty of everything we know about and probably much more while the GOP dismantles what's left of election integrity in the USA.

I can't even remember what all I blurted out in my attempt to rebut the entire premise that giving financial breaks to the parents of young children during this pandemic is something to condemn. I remember saying it's the sort of thing real 1st-World countries do, so I'm sure that didn't sound condescending at all. I went on the explain 75% of people looking for work will take a job and the 25% who aren't are not doing it because they are getting too much free money, or that they are lazy. It's because they are the worst-paying jobs with the worst job-satisfaction and frankly no one wants to work in service if it means some rando is going to stiff them on their tip (or FAR worse) because they wore a mask or enforced a policy. I'm sure I crossed the line when I went on to declare Fox News and other RWM sources are deliberately distracting her with CRT and Dr. Seuss and the child tax credit because there's an avalanche of facts surfacing about the former guy and how he is actually guilty of everything he was accused of, and they have to carry his water six months after he ended the peaceful transition of power in the USA for the first time over an election that even Bill loving Barr conceded was free of significant fraud, even as the GOP can literally pass laws to allow them to overturn any election they don't like and sweet Jesus Mom they are going to start these sham election audits in stated Trump loving WON. By that point I wasn't going to dignify the man by calling him Trump, so I think I called him "that monster, that failed real-estate tycoon con-man reality tv show star" so yeah I think I got on a bit of a roll. For good measure I made it clear that I thought Fox just wasn't telling her the truth. I'm pretty sure she disliked that part the most.

But she kept her cool. At one point she allowed that a lot of what I say is probably true but it's not right for me to paint a whole group of people like that. She told me she loved me and got off the phone after letting me know she wished we could have just chatted like usual. She sounded more sad than angry.
Don't think too badly of me, please. I am used to Dad declaring his Faux News bullshit with more vim and vigor than any 80 y.o. should. But not Mom. She's the closest thing to a decent Christian I've known personally. For her to basically whatabout her way right into some talking point that's already long in the tooth for these things... I guess it broke something within me. I had so much bottled up. Not to mention the last time I saw Mom or Dad in person was Christmas 2019, so I wonder about them a lot.

And I am posting because I feel something I don't think I have ever felt. I'm torn between opposing thoughts. These are important issues to me. Existential issues. At least she has heard someone she loves actually say them. The rest is obvious: I have always had a pretty good relationship with my Mother but it's also very traditional. We don't question our parents. We don't tell them no. We obey them and, in the case of my Dad, we twist ourselves into completely different people to keep the peace because we need them way more than they need anyone but each other. They are really old-school but Mom is so sweet.

In my heart I guess I was just really hoping she'd vocally condemn the man and the movement he created and I think I wanted it so bad I was willing to push too hard. I'd kept it bottled up too long.

I've never wanted to punish a company or a group as much as I want to hurt Murdoch and Ailes and all the sick fucks who primed us to become this hostile to truth, to fact, to observation, measurement, critical thinking, inclusiveness, or even admitting that what happened six months ago is what actually happened instead of "it was a love-fest."

Nah, it was because no one corporation had a vaccine and it was a race to be the first.
If one had, they would have total control of the world and the others would tank.
And so the risk of NOT being that company made them all work together, saying 'if you get it first you share it with us like we would with you'.

Ok, went around and looked and the actual story is that they found a black guy who's willing to go on tv and say that CRT is bad and propaganda. It's just another way for them to keep "CRT" circulating.

Far as I can tell it has zero penetration outside of the right-wing sphere.

Crunch Buttsteak
Feb 26, 2007

You think reality is a circle of salt around my brain keeping witches out?
I find it funny when internal CRT-adjacent material is treated like this shocking thing that whistleblowers bravely expose to the public, only for the company to react by firing the employee in a blind rage for revealing their nefarious plot to the masses. It can't just be, y'know, someone just posting internal sensitivity training documents to a Google drive, then getting poo poo-canned because literally every corporation has rules regarding data security.

Another layer of amusement/frustration is when it makes total sense for a company to put emphasis on sensitivity training. Like, Hasbro is a toy company, they have a vested interest in putting out products with the widest appeal possible. It's not because they want to overthrow the institutions of America and usher in Race Socialism; they just want more fuckin' money.

This is my favorite part of conservatives now. They love capitalism and the "free market". The market has decided being inclusive and supportive is good (mostly because they see how the world has changed) and conservatives are tying themselves into knots. They can't win here.
