NO SPOILERS FOR THE NEW GAME BEFORE RELEASE! KEEP MAJOR SPOILERS FOR BOTH GAMES IN SPOILER BOXES Download the demo to play the first two days and carry over progress into the main game The Story After almost 15 years of waiting with a lot of teases in that time the sequel to The World Ends With You is finally releasing on July 27 2021 for Switch and PS4. Taking place 3 years after the end of the first game we get put in the shoes of Rindo Kanade as he and his best friend Tosai "Fret" Furesawa have been thrust into Shibuya's Reaper Game a 7 day survival game in which only the First Place winners at the end of the week are allowed to stop playing. Forming the team The gameplay Gameplay is like any RPG composed of running around on the map and fighting encounters when you choose to. Combat is against Noise monsters formed of negative emotions and consists of using Psychs as represented by various types of "Pins" with one Psych per person on your team to defeat them. There are numerous types of Pins each with its own Psych so choose the ones that fit your style the best!. The Characters Character Summaries ]taken from the Square Enix Press Kit Rindo (English VA Paul Castro Jr.): One of the newest Players in the Reapers’ Game, Rindo is a high schooler to whom searching for info on his phone is second nature. He prefers to go with the flow, and although he doesn’t go out of his way to interact with others, he won’t turn them away if they come to him first. Thrust into the Game without even realizing it, he now serves as the de facto leader of the Wicked Twisters. Fret (English VA: Griffin Burns) Rindo’s happy-go-lucky classmate and fellow Player in the Reapers’ Game, Fret boasts the ability to get along with just about anyone. While he styles himself as a natural conversationalist, he prefers to keep things light, subconsciously avoiding subjects that are too serious. He enjoys walking around town with his buddy “Rindude.” Nagi(English VA: Miranda Parkin) Another Player in the Reapers’ Game, Nagi is a college student whose youthful appearance leads others to mistake her for a middle schooler. She is deeply passionate about her pastimes, devoting all of her time and energy to her favorite games. Highly perceptive, she is acutely aware of others’ emotions, and shows disdain toward those she deems superficial and disingenuous. Sho Minamimoto (English VA: Andy Hirsch) A fellow Player in the Reapers’ Game, Minamimoto puts his impressive psychic powers to use when he saves Rindo and the gang from a tight spot early on, then forces himself onto their team. He calculates every possible future using his own unique formulas and acts in accordance with the values he discovers, but he remains a mystery to all around him. He seems to have his sights set on something greater than Rindo and the gang Frequently Asked Questions What version of the first game should I play The previous game in its original form came out on the ds but it has been remade for both mobile phones and the switch. Its generally agreed that the best way to play the game is on an actual DS/3DS due to its unique touch based dual screen combat. However that is kind of unreasonable so if you would rather have it on a modern console get it on either mobile or Switch. The only difference is that the switch has a small scenario that serves as a sequel hook for this game. While I recommend playing any version you have access it should be noted that the Switch Port is best played in handheld style using its touch screen since the tv mode controls are motion based and personally I find them very unintuitive. I don't have any of those platforms/I don't have time to play a whole another game While I haven't watched it from what I have heard the anime adaption of The World Ends With You that recently aired is a pretty good adaption of its story and should allow you to catch up without playing the game. Its is available on Hulu and Funimation's streaming services. I heard that the game leaked early/Spoiler Policy While the Switch version of the game was accidentally made available to those who ordered the physical version from Square Enix's Offical Store please do not talk about anything that is not available in the demo or in press materials until the game actually comes out. Once it does please keep major spoilers in spoiler boxes

In my hype for TWEWYN, I found this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AzjfKR2mV7k Someone's gone through The World Ends With You anime and overlaid the original tracks used in the game with scenes from the anime that were missing them. 3 minutes into the demo, I see the game is going to keep the great tradition of close up ramen bowls. Good. I feel that the minimap is going to take some time to get used to. The “top” of the screen should be north, damnit.

So I was one of the few who were lucky enough to get it early thanks to the Square Enix error and they have definitely nailed the tone and feel of the first game with this one even though it has been 15 years since the first one came out. It also is a game that so far seems to be able to stand on its own feet while knowledge definitely helps and in some cases make the mystery deeper due to the difference between games thanks to Rindo and Fret being completely newcomers to the Reapers game. This is probably all I will say about the game until release but if anyone wants non spoiler info like how food and clothes work or other mechanical stuff let me know and I can make a small effort post about them. I am just really excited for the game to finally officially launch and be able to talk about it with other people.

Couple questions: -Are getting past the Reaper walls less annoying than some of them were in the original? -How do the different pins work when attacking is just a simple button press this time around? -I assume like the first game the story doesn’t end after the first week? -Does Tin Pin make a return? -Do all the major characters from the first game make a reappearance in the sequel (a simple yes or no will do for this one)?

Larryb posted:Couple questions: While I never had a problem with the reaper walls in the original from what I can tell its mostly Noise erasing tasks and while this might just be an opinion it feels like most roadblocks actualyl have character dialogue and aren't just Want past this wall here's what to do conversations. In general Pins are assigned to buttons based on what they do for example most if not all of the close combat slashing attacks are assigned to the x button while shooting bullets are assigned to the Y button (on the switch). I haven't unlocked the use more than one pin per button so I don't know how that will work. While there are a few dud pins most are useful. The only thing I have a problem with is that pins that only heal are pretty much useless because since there is one pin per character in the party using a healing pin with limited uses which most are gives the enemies an open target once used if that makes sense. Yes though there is much more content per day and thus it isn't as obvious that there is going to be another week because the game is to short type thing I don't know fully but I doubt it since it hasn't been mentioned in game beyond maybe a couple of thought scans I might have missed. Short answer is Yes for characters Long answer for characters While I haven't beaten the game yet the way the story is going I would say that all the characters you would expect from the first game will probably show up though I am not as certain that two of them will actually appear in person and not just as references Honestly the only problem I have with the game is that there is no fast travel system since the city is much more open than the first game. Pretty much once an area appears in the plot it is accessible on most if not all days so traveling around gets a bit tedious.

Larryb posted:-I assume like the first game the story doesn’t end after the first week? Even without knowledge of the game this is pretty much guaranteed. According to the demo the Top scoring team of the Reapers game gets a Wish, which can be used to escape the game and return to life. The bottom ranked team is erased, and I am assuming then all remaining teams then compete another week. I doubt the Wicked Twisters will get the top score in the first week, and so are forced to do a second, and maybe even third.

Yeah, I pretty much knew this was going to be the case from the getgo but I just wanted to confirm (the days do seem like they last a bit longer this time around after all). As for returning characters: Based on the demo, opening, and trailer at the end of said demo we’ve confirmed: Minamoto Neku Possibly the real world Shiki (we see a girl carrying the same cat doll at least) The male and female reaper duo from the first game (I forget their names) Joshua The first two are obvious since this game takes place a bit after A New Day at the end of the Switch version and as far as I know Josh is still Shibuya’s Composer so it’d make sense for him to have a hand in things. Not sure how they’d bring Shiki, Beat, and/or Rhyme back into the mix though unless they died again or something.

Regardless, maybe this Reaper’s Game has different rules or something (after all, Players now work in teams of 3 rather than 2 and based on the recent trailer can apparently attack one another as well). I mean they're in the game so of course Reapers assume they're dead but we follow them pretty closely from pre-death and thanks to some time-travel no one appears to have died. And they were already seeing noise and players before the whole truck thing. Something weird is happening. E: The Reaper game definitely has a bunch of different rules though and I feel like the whole reason Sho is helping out is to scope out what's changed with the Game.

True, you still seem to be required to have at least one partner in order to play though (I think anyway, that could change later on). The end of A New Day implies that Sho was brought back as Neku’s new game partner but they seem to be separated at the moment. Minamimoto was explaining how you have to have a certain Psych level to use Pins to Rindo and Fret, only to quickly notice that is not the case in the new game, and anyone can use any pin. Presumably, a reason for the change in rules is because the Shinjuku Reapers are running the game this time around instead of the Shibuya ones. We also know that in the first game the reapers game was much more unfair and lethal then normal because of the bet between Kitaniji and Joshua

So does the Game take place across multiple districts this time or something? The trailer showed both Shinjuku and Shibuya Reapers running around after all. Kaiju Cat Destroys the City with Lasers was indeed Shiki's level 3 sync move and it was great. Sync moves in NEO appear to be souped-up versions of your regular pins, and which one you get seems to be based on whoever you're directly controlling at the time (which is in turn controlled by normal usage of pins).

I found it pretty easy myself, each character is mapped to a different button that’s displayed above them and can usually attack with a quick press (though some characters work differently such as Sho having to charge up before he can attack). When you get a message saying “Drop the Beat” that’s your cue to switch over to another character. I don’t really get how you pull off Sync Moves in this game though, can anybody explain it to me?

Larryb posted:I found it pretty easy myself, each character is mapped to a different button that’s displayed above them and can usually attack with a quick press (though some characters work differently such as Sho having to charge up before he can attack). The button is technically associated with the pin, not the character, so you could conceivably shift things around so Sho is shooting stuff using the Y button and Fret is charge kicking (or Piercing Pillaring) with R; or whatever other combo you please. Doesn't seem to make much difference this early on, but it might later. As for sync moves, what I've figured out so far: - I think you carry over at least some of your built up percentage between battles - You get 15% added when you successfully follow up during a Drop the Beat - Press the A button once you're at 100%. The attack is based on the pin of the character you're currently controlling. You change who you're controlling by initiating a normal attack with them (there might be other ways). Different things seem to happen depending on what that pin is. With Shockwave and Force Rounds, you get a combo opportunity that lets you get some sync back (it seems to take fewer hits to initiate a "Drop the Beat," but you get less % when you successfully follow up. Pyrokinesis just launches a big old Meteor at them with no chance for follow up that I could see.

Basically each character you have equips a single pin and this determines what button controls them and what psych they use when pushing buttons. In general each button available (on switch x,y,l,r,zl,zr) has a specific set of types of psych that are available on that button ie x tends to be melee psyches like swords and y tends to be projectile psyches like bullets. You can press multiple buttons at once to use multiple attacks but any character that you either are controlling or who are using their psych will not try to dodge enemy attacks like they will when they are controlled by the ai. Each pin has a condition that triggers the drop a beat meter which means that when you hit the enemy that has that meter with a psych did not trigger it will increase your sync gauge by an amount which at 100% allows you to use sync attacks based on the element of the last psych that increased the sync gauge even if the sync gauge was capped. Your sync attacks also gets a damage multiplier based on I think how many party members used their psych since the last sync attack. From what I can tell all characters mechanically are the same so getting a new character is effectively the same as getting a new pin slot in the first game.

Thanks. Also for anyone who got the game early, does the game ever get challenging at some point? I pretty much breezed my way through the demo (though the Day 2 boss was kind of annoying) and it seems like once you get the hang of things you can basically decimate foes faster than they can even make a significant dent in your HP. Also can you get healing pins in this game at some point? If so, how do they work in the new combat system?

A worryingly high amount of high-end enemies and bosses just drop material pins when on Hard, compared to lower difficulties where they drop pins you can actually use. Same with even just regular Noise, I have way more metal material pins (Rare Metal, Tektite, Adamantite, Orichalcum, and Shadow Matter) than I know what to do with because they're just so common on Hard.

Larryb posted:Can you still sell off pins you don’t need like you could in the first game? Yes, though before you get Garage Sale, which lets you batch sell dupe pins, or ShibuPay Autoload, which automatically cashes yen pins in when you receive them (either through battle or through scenario rewards), you need to go to a store to cash pins in. Once you get Garage Sale, you can batch sell your dupe pins from the menu. Bravery has been replaced by Style. Abilities on threads are now always visible, and any character can equip any thread, but they need a certain amount of Style to activate the thread's ability. You now order food and immediately eat it at the restaurant. Every food has a certain amount of calories, replacing the bytes system from the original game. Characters no longer have individual stomach capacities, it's shared across the entire party. Much like the first game, you empty the hunger gauge by fighting battles. You can choose to go over 100% stomach capacity, but that means you can't eat any more food until you've completely emptied the fullness gauge. If you stay under 100%, you can eat more food without having to get the gauge to 0%. As a replacement for characters' food preferences influencing the sync bonus they get from food, if a character really likes the food they eat now, they get a Tasty Bonus, which either increases one of the food's stat increases, or gives a random other stat boost. Minor note: there's no longer any food that guaranteed increases your drop rate, ala the curious mushrooms or the Absolute Shadow Ramen from the first game, but very rarely, if you feed a character a food they enjoy, you can get a Tasty Bonus that permanently increases your drop rate by 2.
